I have an 11 Pro right now and am contemplating all the Mini, 12 or 12 Pro. If I go with the Mini, I will lose some battery life and camera quality but gain really nice form factor which is attractive to me.

I work at a desk (and from home during the pandemic for who knows how long), so my phone sits on a wireless charger most days. Battery life getting low is a rare thing for me. I am not a professional photographer and take casual pics like most people. Mini seems like what I would want the most.

The more I think of it, the more I am getting tempted to buy the mini -
I am currently using iPhone X, the screen size is only 0.4 inches smaller on mini when compared to X.
But mini has the best PPI among all the 12 models announced.
Do you have Superman vision? 😆

I still find it hard to consider any screen size at 5.4" as 'mini' when it's just one decimal smaller than my Galaxy Note II. I'm still used to screens around 4-4.8" max, but maybe I'm just old school.
While I agree that 5.4” isn’t quite “mini”, note that the aspect ratio is different from your Galaxy Note II, which makes a significant difference. Galaxy Note II in blue, iPhone 12 mini in green (screen dimensions):

For all of the folks getting the Mini, you guys better go case-less.

Thankfully Apple isn't using the frosted glass on the iPhone 12 models like they do on the Pros, because that glass is very slippery compared to the regular glass. The small size of the Mini in combination with the grippy glass back and flat edge design will make it a dream to hold securely in your hand. Slapping a case on that cute little beast would be a crime.

Another reason I’ve held on to my 6s since 2015 is Touch ID. It’s a feature I really like and works for me all the time and quick. I’m gonna miss this feature the most if I get the mini or the 12 pro.

Having an iPod Touch with a 4" screen, I won't be tempted to get a mini iPhone 😜

Honestly, no TouchID on the Mini is the main reason why I'm having trouble pulling the trigger and upgrading from my OG iPhone SE. Even though my SE has the first generation of TouchID, it still works pretty darn well and basically as soon as I take it out of my pocket the phone is already unlocked and ready to go. It's even more convenient during this pandemic where masks are the norm and FaceID is useless.

TouchID on the Mini would be perfect. If I'm planning to spend almost $1000 Canadian on a phone, I shouldn't feel any regret or disappointment. With the iPhone 12 Mini I feel a little bit of regret and disappointment with there being no TouchID. Perhaps I'll just chug a long one more year with my SE... Or maybe once I see it and hold it in person I'll have my wallet already open... we'll see!

The Mini is the cheapest iPhone along with it being the one you do not need to use accessories for, meaning that you'll save even more money! Apple's worst nightmare!

Write me up for another Mini 64 GB Blue. Can't wait for 6/11 to come! Hopefully the orders will be dispatched in a speedy manner... Will switch from my 5-year old 6S, so it's gonna be a pretty big jump.

I was going to make fun of you for saying the release day was June 11th, then I realized not everyone on MacRumors is American like me...

I’ve never had the frosted glass. That’s something I’m a little worried about. I don’t go case-less most of the time, but I like to occasionally. I wonder if the flat edges will help make it more grippable than the 11 pro.

Yeah if the mini had the better camera with zoom I might consider it but I have the 11 Pro and I’m debating if I want to give up the incredible camera.
I think the "Wide Angle" and the "Ultra Wide Angle" lens on the Mini are actually better than the equivalent cameras on the 11 Pro. I know they have a slightly larger sensor size (so should be better in low light) so really the only downgrade would be losing the telephoto lens.

Man the regular iPhone 12 looks good... after tasting the 11P is hard not to be tempted by the 6.1 12... and I was dreaming for a smaller iPhone like the Mini for years...

Agreed! I’m using the 11 Pro and the mini is what I wanted before the event. After seeing the size/weight of the 12 it’s hard not to consider it. But if both were up for preorder on Friday I’d choose the mini over the 12. So I think based on that reason I’m going to pass on the 12 and wait for the mini. Unless I see a hands on video that changes my mind...

iPhone 12 mini will undoubtly be ordered. Had the SE for a long time, but the camera quality and a bit too small screen made me go iPhone 11. The 12 mini is spot on in every way. Small, compact, top specs AND camera equal to the 12. OLED-screen is also a big plus.

Yes, it is a lot smaller, but the screen is only 0,1 inches smaller than an iPhone 8 Plus. And a lot larger than the iPhone SE2 even with a smaller footprint.

haha I said the same on other thread, I think that the pre order tomorrow is making us think on the 12, if the mini would be available also tomorrow I wouldn't think much on it...

But I'm scared. I work as a technician in schools. Plus I don't like scratches or scuffs.

As long as the scaling ratio of width and height are that close, 1.04 vs 1.04, it will be perfect.
If the ratios were 1.04 and 1.10 then it would be all messed up.

Agreed. I just find it interesting.

Thank you for that information. You say Apple abandoned subpixel AA a long time ago but still does grayscale AA. Grayscale AA isn't subpixel AA then? Anti-aliasing (of any sort) was basically what I meant when I clumsily wrote "the system will work with colors".

One good resource for understanding the difference is here: https://gankra.github.io/blah/text-hates-you/#anti-aliasing-is-hell

It’s how you described “work with colors” that made me think you were talking about subpixel AA.

But yes, subpixel AA takes advantage of knowing how the RGB subpixels are laid out to get sharper edges, hence the name. The price is some false color in the edges, and that it works best with high contrast things like text. Grayscale AA operates at the pixel level. You don’t get quite as good sharpness, but it’s usable in more situations (graphics/games/etc). Most AA is the latter form. As devices get more powerful, you can apply techniques like super sampling to make the blending appear more natural, but things take a performance hit.

Apple’s approach to non-integer scaling on the Mac, the 6+ and 12 Mini is similar to super sampling. The page you linked earlier describes it accurately, but it misses the opportunity to connect the dots at a higher level, IMO. It was very much written by an engineer.

This! I'd order both and send one back. I think Apple knows 1) people are impatient and 2) the mini/Pro max will outsell the 12 so they're trying to get the margins up
