The more I think about it the more I’m probably going to move from the 11 pro to the 12 mini. The 12 pro is just too big for me to use one handed without straining my hand. I put my SIM back in my 11 Pro temporarily and it just feels much more comfortable. I think going down to the 12 mini might be the best ergonomically.
This guy has a group video + individual videos of each color that I found useful earlier today. I’m definitely getting the green, second choice would be white.
Mini is $699 my friend, the same price as 11 last year.
people paid $699 last year for a giant phone. People will pay $699 this year for the mini. People pay $799 for giant phone this year.
There is no comparison to be made between 6.1" phone buyers because of different sale prices.
If 12 was $699 like it was last year (or even $749), and the mini was $599 (or $649), then Apple would be able to analyze if people want a small phone simply for size and not price.
there will be people that get mini this year only for the price, and be unhappy it is smaller.

I'm incredibly tempted. I picked up a XS back in January when it was being clearenced out, and I mostly like it, but I find that I can't quite reach the top right corner, and more importantly, the control centre one handed (I hold the phone in my left hand). I'm hoping (though not optimistic) that the Mini will make that easier.

I was so excited about the Mini. But I think the battery will be a let down espacially if you plan on keeping in >1y.

Like many others here, this is the phone I’ve been waiting for since the 5S. I’ve got relatively small hands and was dismayed when Apple moved away from reasonable sized phones that you can hold and use easily with one hand. The 5S and original SE were the last phones which felt truly comfortable to use one handed, which is how I use my phone around 80% of the time.
The iPhone 7 was light and thin enough to feel like a reasonable trade off to get more screen real estate at the expense of a bit of comfort, so having the approximate form factor of a 5S, and the screen size of a 7, plus the new tech feels like a dream come true!
The reason I think this phone will sell so well is that human hands haven’t ‘evolved’ to make holding and using larger phones any easier over the last ten years. Yes, we’ve adapted and changed the way we use phones, and there are technological improvements like the screen ‘pull down’ which make things easier, but adapting to a phone which is too big for your hand, and enjoying using that phone aren’t the same thing.
The last few years of iPhones have felt like someone trying to sell me new clothes which don’t quite fit, based on the amazing new technology and materials (I.e super lightweight, ultra waterproof & breathable etc). No matter how incredible the technology, if the clothes don’t quite fit, the increase in technology will never outweigh the functional loss of the clothes being too big. I don’t care how many multi-function pockets my new jeans have is they keep falling down..
I upgraded to the XS last year and have largely regretted it, despite the bump in functionality and the better camera. It’s way too heavy to use comfortably with one hand. I know that most people are focusing on the size of the iPhone ‘mini’ but I think that the weight is going to be equally game-changing.
It’s easy to forget how many elderly users (my parents abs in-laws included) want smaller, lighter phones as they are easier to grip, hold and use. I think this phone will hit that market as well as the rest of use who just want something smaller and altogether more ‘portable’
I can happily live with a slightly smaller screen (and it’s not a huge drop from the XS) - my only reservation is the loss of the telephoto lens. It can be really useful for photographing people, particularly in the portrait setting. But having said that, I probably only use it about 20% of the time, so if I use the new ultra wide lens a similar amount then that’s a reasonable trade - plus the main lens is better than the XS - so that’s another plus for me.
Like many others I eagerly await a ‘mini pro’ - which I expect next year if this phone sells as well as I think it will. But I’ve realised how much I’ve wanted a smaller phone by the fact that I can’t wait another year!

What's your definition of elderly? My 80 year old parents want the biggest screen they can get for their old eyes. Since most of their use is sitting at home, they don't care how small or light it is.
Even my 60 year old parents prefer large screens due to the eyes getting worse. They do use the SE though, but that’s only due to the low price. Given that the 12 Mini is in another price segment than the SE, I doubt the Mini will be popular for older people. I’d recommend the 11 which now goes for $599.
I think there’s probably a split between failing eyesight and weaker wrists/arthritic joints which come with ageing, meaning some older people (and younger people with poor eyesight) will want a biggest screen, and others, for whom size and weight is more important, will want a smaller, lighter phone. The point I was making is that we shouldn’t assume that all older people want a bigger phone, and I know that both my parents and in-laws (in all their 70s) want a phone similar to the 12 mini
They say 60 is the new 40... At 55, I'm going with a Mini from my iPhone 11Pro. One handed operation on the 11P is a challenge and it's a pain while walking the dog, etc. Really looking forward to it.
I'm 52, prefer small phones but have trouble reading them. Thankfully, I'm a light user and have many pairs of readers. Can't wait for the Mini to arrive👍
After watching this video, I'm actually leaning towards black. Was originally thinking of going blue, but the dark black with matte black sides look pretty sleek...still going back and forth a bit though...
Black and white never let down, but this white is not pure white... I see a pink tint on it, but it looks good.

I would think more relevantly than elderly people (who have other problems to deal with such as failing eyesight and dexterity), a smaller phone will appeal to women or anyone who has smaller hands than the average male.
For those people, being forced to stop what they're doing and use 2 hands to use their phone is NOT progress.
I'm guessing forums like these are overwhelmingly used by tech-orientated males who will never really understand why giant phones are a complete PITA for a huge number of people (this thread excepted of course) 😉

Oops. You are right about the price. I got the price wrong. 😂
But there are many people who are not upgrading from 11 because they don't see much improvement.
If people cannot afford $5 more per month for the bigger size they want, they wouldn't be upgrading. Price will not be the deciding factor for most people. And if people were not happy with the small screen they will return it.

I must be overestimating peoples' sensitivity to price then. Perhaps I shouldn't think that most people will have a problem woth having to pay $100 ($130) more than last year for a 6.1" phone that doesn't come with a charging brick or headphones?

yea, no reason to upgrade from 11. That's still a good phone.
I read it somewhere on the forums that the higher 12 price is just getting people more comfortable with paying $1000 for a cellphone. I mean, a 128 GB 12 is $849 ($879): why not just spend an extra $150 ($120) and get the pro?

If I lots of expendable cash, I wouldn't even consider the 12, it's a waste of money considering the Pro is so close in price. Though, I would not think this if the 12 was $699 or even $749, since the difference in price would be $300/$250 from the pro.
I don't like this new idea that Apple has that they only give their best to the Ultra Premium phone. I liked Jobs era where the very best was "affordable" to everyone. $999 is not affordable to everyone.
I agree that for younger people the size of your hand probably determines the ideal phone dimensions, and that men generally have larger hands than women (although my wife’s fingers are longer than mine!)
But as people age they lose muscle mass and grip strength, so size and weight take on a new significance. Objects which are larger (wider) and heavier are harder to grip than objects which are smaller and lighter (irrespective of whether a phone is being used one or two-handed). But like I said, there’s a trade off with eyesight in some cases.
As my eyesight is currently fine, I think my brain can adjust far more easily to a different sized screen than my hands can adjust to a different sized phone. My brain quickly forgets what it felt like to look at any other size screen (whether smaller or bigger, as long as the change isn’t massive), whereas my hands don’t adjust as quickly - as they can’t get physically bigger to account for holding a larger object.
And whilst I have changed the way I use a larger phone, these changes mostly haven’t been for the better. Because I don’t feel as though I can securely hold and use the phone in one hand, I don’t use it when I’m out and about as much as I used to. I.e. I use it less like I want to use a phone - which is why I find the concept of a smaller iPhone genuinely exciting.
I'm middle aged and for me the perfect combo is small phone + iPad.
