I ordered a blue Mini with a Saddle Brown leather case, but now I’m starting to second guess myself and think maybe I should have gone all black (phone and case), like I used to back in the days of smaller iPhones.

What does everyone think about the color options with the Mini?
I always recommend dark colors for big phones, and lighter colors for smaller phones because visually it balances things out. If you get a black mini, then the whole phone looks even smaller,....unless of course that's the look you're going for.

I just think on the mini you should go for a "fun" color. Small, but bright! Love the green mini.

If you moved up to the Plus for typing space, I don't think the Mini is going to suit you very well.
To be honest, the screen size of the mini isn't far off that of the plus - it just a little narrower. I'm not concerned about typing on the narrower screen - I use glide typing and that is awful on a screen the size of an iPad. A smaller screen lends itself well to this form of entry.

Those photos are deceptive. The Plus phones have 5.5” screen, the Mini a 5.4” screen, and the regular 6/7/8 have a 4.7” screen. So even though the Mini looks closer in size to the 6/7/8, the screen is closer in size to the Plus phones.

Actually it's smack bang in the middle if you go by screen area. The 8 plus for example had 83.4, the 8 has 60.9 and the new 12 mini has 71.9cm2.

What's deceptive: you can see the size of the phone, you can see the size of the screen, where's the deception?

But 5.5" 16:9 and 5.4" 19.5:9 are not the same thing at all. The 8 Plus's screen is almost 20% wider than the 12 Mini's, 3% shorter, and has a 16% larger area (not counting the space taken out by the notch). If you find you need the width of the 8 Plus for typing then this will be a very different experience.

Using the screen diagonal as a shorthand for size is no longer simple now that there are a mix of different aspect ratios in play.

(Personally I found my brother's 8 Plus quite unpleasant to hold due to the width of the device, but different people have different preferences).

Deceptive has more than one meaning. It doesn't have to mean that someone has pro-actively set out to deceive you. It can also mean that in certain circumstances and in certain situations you come away with a different perception of a product. I remember looking at smart cars in a Mercedes showroom. The black and the white smart cars looked completely different. The black one looked so much smaller, yet they were identical. The showroom manager had not set out to deceive, but we would still say it's deceptive. The display size of the mini is much closer to the plus than most people would imagine but because everyone focuses on the 'mini' nomenclature most of us are expecting a tiny screen.

IMO iOS does not scale very well as display sizes get bigger. An iPad looks silly with that widely spaced static grid of icons. I look at the larger iPhones and am left thinking it doesn't look right.

I didn’t mean you were deliberately deceiving anyone, but due to the properties of the phones (bezels, aspect ratio as you mentioned), there is essentially an optical illusion whereby the Mini looks smaller than the SE despite having a screen size closer to the Plus. You’re right that it’s not 1:1 because of the different layout of the phones but it’s not as simple as just eyeballing it either.

Nothing deceptive about them at all. The poster I was replying to had gone from an iPhone 6 to an 8 Plus for 'more typing space'. The Mini screen is narrower than the 6,7,8 as can be seen by my 'deceptive' photo, hence my response to him. If you think that an even narrower screen will be fine for him, I don't know where you're coming from. The only 'deceptive' thing in all of this is how the screens are measured on the diagonal giving people the impression that the 12 Mini is almost the same as the 8 Plus.

Apparently I should have addressed this post to you:

And I will add that since the Mini can be used one handed, typing can in fact be easier, if you do it one handed.

And once again you are ignoring the fact that the poster I replied to had gone from a 6 to an 8 Plus for more typing space. A smaller cramped keyboard doesn't work as well for some, it may for you.

Never thought I would ever downgrade, but here we are!

from 11 pro max to mini ☺️

Seeing the timely mini reviews from the tube community, it seems most have been avoiding the battery test but I found some that said it’s ok. I’m hoping my experience is better than ok or it’s back to the 12 or 11 pro.

Most are doing impressions I guess.

After watching the Zollotech unboxing on YouTube I'm excited. He showed the black mini in the saddle brown leather case. Looked ace👍

I've gone with the exact same combination. After seeing the iPhone 12 at local EE store before lockdown last week, as I was tempted with Black, but Blue and Saddle brown just worked for me.

I’ve now seen the red and blue color in person. They both looked good, but I was surprised at how big difference was in terms of fingerprints. Blue: nasty fingerprints all over the place. Red: hardly visible. (And yes, I was assured both were heavily used demo units.)

My advice is: if you plan to go naked and you’re *at all* concerned about fingerprints, go for the red, mint or white.
