I have my original iPhone and will never get rid of it. I got it on launch day and was #29 in line. Although I only used the phone for 6 months before porting back to Verizon, I did SO much with that phone in 6 months including a trip to San Diego, buying an S2000, several g/f's, etc etc. Haha it has sentimental value. I missed out on the 3G and 3GS due to not wanting to go to AT&T but I will probably never use a non-iPhone ever again. It just fits into my lifestyle too well and does everything I want it to and how I want it.

I collect all the boxes I buy from Apple. I try not to sell anything I buy from them, I just let friends use them when I am done and want them back when they don't work so I can keep them.

I can't seem to ever get around to selling them. Oh well, now I have 2 of each. (one for me and one for wife) Each of the phones were all launch day units. All of them have been jailbroken and unlocked with the exception of the iphone 4's.

i got all four, though I think the 3G will be on its way out soon...of the four, I think the 3G was the worst one, didn't really add much other than the 3G and flush headphone jack...

You're collecting the models. They are all the same form factor.

By form factor, I mean the design. Unlike desktops, there's only so much you can change what's essentially a touchscreen. So each design change qualifies as a form factor IMO.

While a majority of the responders might be collecting the models I'm only collecting one in each design/form factor. I don't see the point of keeping a 3G when it looks the same as 3GS. Likewise, I plan to sell the iP4 if iPhone 5 retains the same design/form factor.

I have had every version so far but I've handed down my 3G and now my 3GS to other friends. That's how I got them into Apple stuff and iPhones really. I still have the 1st gen though. It was my first Apple product purchase. I would want to hold on to that. :)

As someone who has collected many things over the years, I realize that all collections will eventually be sold off or thrown away. I have also come to have an appreciation for living "lean" and keeping my house and especially living spaces uncluttered.

Once something doesn't have a practical use, I usually sell it, give it away, or get rid of it. I also really like to know that someone else is getting good use of it. I sold my original iPod to a guy who was REALLY happy to get one for a good price. That made me smile. I sold my iPhone 3G just before I got my i4 to a guy who wanted to use it on T-Mobile, and was really happy to have it as well. Having iPhones sitting in a drawer or on a shelf would feel like someone should be getting use out of it. I'd almost rather give it away than do that.

I don't fault any of you for saving them, though. Just my own opinions and thoughts.

Yeah, still using my gen 1. Mom stood in line on day 1 to get it for me (she loves me :) ). It really does look like a smaller iPad in construction... and the iPad is solid.

That's nuts. Interesting to see the design evolution though.

Original iPhone was mine (bought it a few months after launch when it was marked down in price)

Spouse had the 3G.

I then went to the 3GS and now I have the iPhone 4 at the subsidized price. My spouse inherited my 3GS and his 3G was recently sold to my co-worker's son. (The kid went swimming with his iPhone - don't ask me why but I think he was drunk - he was over age 21.)

So now we have the original iPhone, 3GS, and the iPhone 4 plus all of the boxes. I was using my original iPhone as an iTouch but I recently restored it not knowing that I wouldn't be able to use it again as an iTouch without reactivating it via iTunes. Kind of bummed that I can't use it as an iTouch but that's ok since I have the iPad (love it!).

I have to say that I do like the original iPhone with it's smooth metal backing plus it included the charging stand. (I don't think it's worth paying $29 for a charging stand.)

The iPhone 4 is my favorite design since the very first iPhone. I never did own that one though. I've owned the 3G and the 3GS but sold each to upgrade to the latest versions. I'm not terribly nostalgic about iPhone but I still have the very first iPod.. haha what a brick that is. :p

You can still reactivate it without any cellular service provided you still have the original SIM card.

You can use the original iPhone charging stand with your iP4.

The iPhone and Apple products are becoming more and more of a commodity. I've never had an Apple product that hasn't been refurbished (iPod touch 1G, iPhone 3GS, Macbook Pro have all been replaced). It's almost like a driver's license or money; it's yours but it's not actually yours. When I buy an Apple product, it's like I'm renting something. It's unfortunate I never get to keep the original product that my hard earned money bought.

I can see that comparison. Each Mac I've ever owned, from 8-core Mac Pro to a G4 Mini, has a great resell value compared to any other consumer electronics. It 'is' almost like silver or cash, keeps its value.

Heck, look at people who were storing the Hi-Fi, iSight, etc...

Ive had every iPhone as well, the original is still the best form factor IMO, but I really like my new iP4.

Why do some people think 3GS was the biggest improvement? It added a freaking compass and basic video. And obviously it was faster.

The iPhone 4 is also faster, added HD video, front camera, LED flash, gyroscope, all new design, 40% longer battery etc

The 3Gs was a clone of the 3G that had video and a compass.

It's much more than that.

3G -> 3GS:

Improved battery life
Faster processor/more memory
Better camera, with autofocus and tap to focus
Video
Compass
Oleophobic coating
Voice Control
HSDPA implementation (allows faster download speeds)

3GS -> iPhone 4:

Improved battery life
Faster processor/more memory
Better rear camera with LED flash and backside illumination sensor
Front facing camera (for FaceTime)
HD Video at 30 fps
Gyroscope
Retina display
Extra microphone for ambient noise cancellation
802.11n support
HSUPA implementation (faster upload, in addition to HSDPA)
All new design

The 3GS isn't the small improvement over 3G that you make it out to be. In contrast, the 3G added only three new changes (3G, A-GPS, and all new design) over original iPhone.

Improvements are pretty subjective though. For someone who doesn't care for certain new features of iPhone 4 and got more out of 3GS, the 3GS is going to "feel" like a bigger improvement. Strictly speaking, iP4 added 3 more features (depending on your definition of features) over 3GS compared to 3GS over 3G.

Don't forget that the 3G implemented HSDPA. iPhone 4 implements both HSDPA and HSUPA (faster upload).

Oh why do I bother. People will say anything to reaffirm their choice to skip a revision (not you JayLenochiniMac).
