Once I no-glassed the Dock I'm very pleased with Leopard: other thn Afloat not working (yet) everything else seems much improved.

I've said it before but, I hated Tiger at first and by 10.4.3 I started to really like it a lot better and by 10.4.10, I loved it. I'm not going to give up on Leopard just yet. I'll stick it out for now.

For the record, I hated Panther at first too. I still miss Jaguar sometimes... I used to really like it... It had minimize in place.

I posted this from my iPod touch.

My major beef with Leopard is software compatibility. This is my first Mac OS X upgrade since switching so I'm not used to programs just not working. I won't be going back to Tiger though, it looks so outdated when I see screen shots of it now!

But, the particular sore spots for myself:
Dock - option for nestled folders
I never imagined that so many people would miss these. Honestly when I discovered you could do the folder menu thing, my impression was "that's neat" and I never considered it again. I guess this is all the Windows switchers who miss it, I can't imagine who else would think navigating menus is a good way to find files or execute applications. Its time to give up your addition to the "Start" menu!
Stacks - stationary icons that don't change with new apps and downloads
This is a big deal?
Finder Icons - less homogenized more visual diversity
Easy to change.
Spotlight - Used to be simple and organized
It isn't any more? The menu is the same, the "Show all" window is totally different than before, but after a while you'll find it makes a lot of sense, and is actually more powerful than the Tiger one. Change is good, after using it for a few weeks I find the Tiger one to be a little to "simple".
Front Row - lost the "zing" with UI and transitions
This is honestly a serious issue for you?
Front Row - Re-integrate with itunes - and keep playing when it's activated.
One of things I like about Leopard is that Front Row is no longer just an Applescript-like calling of iTunes/iPhoto etc. The fact is that you shouldn't have to open iTunes just to play an MP3!
Broken Widgets
Broken Apps
This is why you wait to adopt, or at least, let other people find out what is broken before you take the plunge yourself.
Firewall - Seeming too "dumbed down" or neutered
If you think the Firewall is dumbed down from Tiger, you don't understand how the Leopard Firewall works, simple as that.
Login - background looks "cartoony" miss blue
OK you've got me there, definitely a reason to downgrade to Tiger! :D

Seriously: Its easy to fix and come on - who cares!

If this is the list of what's worse about Leopard, you should have tried Tiger 10.4(.0).

This is why I stated they were sore spots for me.

Everyone has different needs, wants and opinions. Obviously yours differ.

I just feel the things that pulled me into Tiger (and back to Apple) aren't with Leopard.

FYI: The start menu bit - Is NOT from Windows - I never liked the start menu on the dark side. On 10.4 I liked having one click access to everything, and I don't always know the name of the file I want - but I usually can remember where I left it. So for me it was faster than spotlight.

My reasons are good enough to justify another partition just for Tiger. Things will change in a newer version of Leopard, maybe enough to bring me back full time. I'll wait that one out.

Also, the login screen is the main reason I'm going back to Tiger. :apple:

I am absolutely holding off on Leopard until Lightroom is compatible. I use it as part of my job and have 10,000+ images in my personal library besides.

Also, the login screen is the main reason I'm going back to Tiger. :apple:
Sorry, but my sarcasm was well placed picking you up on this point: This is such a trivial thing, both to complain about and to fix. Seriously take a look around the forum, you'll quickly find the way to change the default login screen backdrop.

As trivial my reasons may be, it still is in line with why I'm going back to Tiger. I'm sure there are other things that annoy you, and I would consider some of these things to be trivial in my own regard.

My approach now, is adding the functionality I need to Tiger, as that generally seems more available, compared to adding what I need in Leopard. (still being a relatively young OS - many solutions are a way down the road)

Come 10.5.2 - I'll test the waters again.

After the install problems were cleared up, Leopard has been dandy for me. My only issues are with the support of disks on the AEBS which are a bit erratic but do work. Going back to Tiger wouldn't do much to change that. Hopefully 10.5.1 will.

No probs with Leopard, it's nice. I am surprised, I thought Tiger would be hard to follow, but Leopard has some really nice touches.

I love this... When you compare the problems of Leopard to the problems of Vista these problems are meaningless.... Granted some of the eye candy is missing or different but when you consider the problems Vista users are experiencing, this is nothing..

Of course Leopard is not gonna be what you expected.. No OS will ever live up to someones expectations but its a solid upgrade which does give a lot of new features.. The broken bits you mention WILL get fixed (its only a week old!).. and people are already working on ways to change the visuals so you can customise it to your hearts desire..

By the way, Im aware that some important older apps are having problems but come on.. if your a developer/designer/programmer making a living out of those apps then what the hell were you doing switching to a brand new OS?? thats just dumb

First, I'm not a designer, developer or programmer. Though if I was a programmer, I wouldn't be voicing my issues with Leopard, I'd be fixing them.

Second, comparing the problems faced by Apple to those of Microsoft, is akin to comparing Oranges to Horses. Seriously.

Apple *should* know the vast majority of hardware that Leopard will be installed on, because they are behind it. I would expect Apple software development, in spite of having to ensure compatibility between multiple Power PC AND Intel configurations, should still have an easier time. Especially in contrast to M$. So as much as I prefer any Cat to Vista - it isn't a fair comparison to make.

The comparison is to emphasise that most problems are extremely minor that are fine for someone with the slightest level of tolerance. I mean... come on! "im gonna change back to tiger cos i dont like the login screen???"

PS. Apple make computers.. They dont make peripherals. Vista had 5 years, an infinite budget, a rediculous amount of developers and third party supports AND its been out over 10 months and yet still the problems people are experiencing are 10 x more annoying than anything in Leopard.

Leopard isn't doing it for me. Lightroom is not working correctly, and my photoshop license key is not registering so as of now i'm on a trial. I know this is most likely adobe, but it is still not usable for me outside of web browsing and music. I'm in tiger right now because I need to edit some pictures. thank god for superduper!

Sounds like a complete erase and reinstall would solve those problems to me.

Agreed. Its getting annoying to see people comparing Leopard's minor issues with Vista's, its starting to happen in the press now too, and the Windows fanboys are having a field day about how this is supposedly "payback" for Mac users being "smug".

This is all rather annoying because the reality is that Leopard is probably Apple's most stable ".0" OS release in years. Although there are always going to be issues with a first release (which is why you always hold back your mission critical machines until at least a ".3" IMHO), Leopard has shown itself to be fast and stable on the 3 Macs I have installed it on (1Ghz G4 PB, 1.5Ghz Core Solo mini and 2.33Ghz MBP - a pretty wide range of things there).

Meanwhile I have a Vista machine at work that even after months of patches I would rate about as bad as one of Apple's previous ".0" releases, the initial release of Tiger (which installing when I didn't have a backup machine to go to at the time was one of my biggest mistakes ever). That and the Vista login screen background is puke inducing, almost enough to switch back to XP right there! ;)

My Vista machine at work gets so slow and locked up I regularly have to power it down. This has yet to happen to Leopard, and that's pretty good in my opinion. By the time 10.5.3 rolls around, Leopard is going to be one hell of an OS.

If you were stupid enough not to deactivate your adobe products before upgrading to leopard, you deserve neither. Leopard is a solid upgrade, but you need to think before you leap.

Umm... we're not using Windows. We are not Windows users... that is why we are using Leopard. That doesn't make the problems not exists just because there are bigger problems in Vista. That's like saying... why are you complaining about your new shoes because a lot of people in the world aren't lucky enough to even be able to afford shoes yet you complain about your shoes... Well, when my feet hurt with my new shoes and my old shoes fit better, I am used to my feet not hurting. Simple as that. We are used to Tiger and so Leopard is a little funky to us but, that doesn't mean that we should just brush those problems away and say "Whew, well at least we're not using Vista". We shouldn't even have to say that anyways... if we have to say "At least it's not as bad as Vista" Then Apple screwed up.

That wasn't a very nice thing to say. Seriously... why do you have to be like that?

Initially I was really positive about Leopard :)

however after a weekend of regular application hangs that would not be quit by any means, also system crashes with the press power button to restart your computer screen and dropped internet connections.

I was planning to start booting into Tiger on my external hard drive as my working system and do a fresh reinstall of Leopard or even wait till 10.5.1. or .2

HOWEVER ;)

Suddenly it is starting to work as it should with no instability in the last 36 hours.

Potential remedies

1. New iTunes and Quicktime updates curing something (possible but unlikely)

2. Updating to the new 1.1.2 version of growl ( this could be a suspect as it has its hooks into several system wide things)

3. Turning off iMac syncing and Back to Mac. I have a strong feeling this was to blame. Dont need this feature anyway as I only have one mac and limited dial up networking anyway

The fact is my friend... they are all COMPUTERS and they both use OPERATING SYSTEMS!.. My comparison was to give comparison to the problems that the majority of COMPUTER users face when upgrading their operating system.

The small number of issues people have experienced are unfortunate and in some cases shouldnt happen... but they will get fixed and pretty soon i imagine. Leopard is Apples single most important OS release because of the momentum Apple computers is building. Its in their interest to get it right and in my humble opinion, as things lay currently in the computer world, they arent doing bad!

The power off problems you were experiencing are called a "kernel panic". This could mean you have a hardware problem with your machine. Possible something is overheating (it might have only happened in leopard because leopard might be pushing the machine more than Tiger).

has the ambient temperature in the room been lower over the last 36 hours?
