This guy nailed it. If you can afford to worry and waste time and switch computers, you obviously do not use it for a living. Until it stops making money, it doesn't need fixing.

Not all of us that work with computers are dependent on a single computer for our work. I work with my computers professionally and I'm not even tied to a particular operating system.

Are we replacing the computer because we need to or because we want some shiny new kit? I fall into the latter category because I could keep using my current machine, but why not upgrade? :)

I just bought mine so I have no intention of getting rid of it for at least the three years it's covered under AppleCare.

... I doubt that Apple will have any refurb SR MBP stock.

I'm curious to know why you think they wouldn't have any refurbs in stock? They usually have several. (Currently 9 15" models and 11 17" models.)

Well if you want a replacement you will have to send it in for repair 3 times within the apple care period.

Why 3 times? If a MBP needs to be replaced, they replace it. It doesn't matter how many times.

I'm meant they won't have any Santa Rose MBPs in refurb. I know my MBP needs the logic board replaced, but since the processor and everything is soldered to the board, they might have to give me a current-gen replacement if they don't have the older parts.

over the past year i have done quite the computer switch

Macbook White > iMac (lost about $300) iMac is now family comp.

purchased/sold Refurb MBP (lost around $200)

purchased/sold blackbook (gained $100 actually, apple gave me $300 cash back because of the early 2008 update)

with that money i purchased my current MBP

all of the gained/losses can be divided by two because my parents pay for half of everything. with me being a kid, my parents pay half of anything I want. I made the other half on eBay. I really dont have the money to upgrade, and hope to get applecare when they mail the year notice letter.

I know many people personally and especially in the forums of people having to send it for repair 3 times for apple to replace the whole mbp with the current gen systems.

I dont know why it is but its an apple policy.

I love my computers, so hell no, I'm not selling it.... yet.

jjahshik32, I'm disappointed in you; after all those swaps and finally settling, you thinking about moving on again when a younger bunch comes along? Man I hope you're not like this on "other" matters.

when i was a PC user, used to own a crappy Acer. I never cared if the latest Acer or Dell came out, and had the omg feeling i have to upgrade. So i kept that acer for 3 years. Then last summer i got a macbook, loved it, but when new MBPs came out in Feb, I had to get one so sold my macbook and upgraded to the MBP. Then i felt my 2.4 didn't have enough vram for my liking so I just sold it and upgraded to the 2.5 so I can run it with my 30". Now all this talk of new MBPs next week or next month has given me that OMG feeling again.

I don't understand it, with Apple I always feel like I must have the latest stuff. With Acer i didn't give a rats ass. This is obviously not good :( I need to be able to keep a mac for at least a year. None that i've owned so far have ever lasted more than 8 months.

any advice people? The new 2.5 i ordered as well is going to be an awesome machine, with the 7200 rpm hard drive. And back in the day would have out lasted double the years my acer would.

Quick question though: since i built to order this mbp by getting the faster hard drive, i heard if there is problem it cannot be returned??? I ask because i am afraid that the guys in china were in a hurry to build this (i requested expedited shipping) and so got sloppy. i don't think i can afford to send this back and wait another week or so for a new mac. Any advice? that said, I just want that one perfect mac which i feel totally comfortable and satisfied with so i can keep it. My previous 2 had minor issues.

I'm assuming you mean they won't have any MBPs with Merom processors, since all current MBPs have the Santa Rosa platform, including yours and the ones being sold today.

Knowing some who personally had to do that does not make it an Apple policy. I had mine replaced the first time with no hesitation.

As for me, I'm trying to sell the mbp and if it doesnt sell for the price I want I'm going to just keep it for until the apple care is just about to run out within a few months and sell then.

Since you are selling your MBP because of something that might fail in the future, are you letting your potential buyers know this fact?

My mbp didnt end up selling for the price that I wanted so I'm keeping this baby. =D

I'm going to stop worrying about it and it did make me feel alot better and more confident since nvidia announced that only a small % of certain notebook configurations were affected.

I think were ok, now I'm going to just enjoy using the damned thing and probably sell 2 1/2 years from now to upgrade anyway. All is good once again.

It took you a week to realize that "higher than normal" failure rates doesn't mean "100% OF THESE CHIPS ARE TOTALLY DEFECTIVE STARTING NOW!!".

Also, $2800 seems just a bit high if its possibly defective.

... after flooding the forums with god-knows-how-many posts of complaining and starting 9 new threads on the subject! Sheesh!
