My 2009 8 core Mac Pro arrived yesterday. If the new models offer more GHz for my £ then I'll be sending it back to Apple and ordering a new one. If its marginal then I may stick with what I've got.

I did exactly this

In my opinion, the 2009 Quad is overpriced by about $1000 for what you get, and that's with Apple Tax included. Let's what they price the entry level Mac Pro at, and whether it's acceptable value for what you get. Otherwise, I'll stick to my G5.

I was in the market to buy a Mac Pro waiting for the 2009 version, i was so disappointed in A,the base standard model being a quad core from an 8 core and B, the base 8 core model being only slightly faster than the 2008 2.8 octo and being £1000 more for in my opinion nothing that would make my workflow faster.
So i bought a discounted 2008 model for £1500!!! bargain! and spent the £1000 on an extra 8gb of ram 2x4gb, a gtx285 (when it came out) and 2x1tb drives, and got a system that was perfect for me. I cant see anyone being over the moon with the new model, it will be another disappointing upgrade not in technology terms (actually probably quite exciting) but in terms of value it will be overpriced and at a premium. But the 2009 version will be a very appealing buy like the 2008 was.
I just hope that apple come to their senses and sell a base 8 core at the £1800 mark just like the 2008, instead of the £600 excess for the 2.26 2009 which wasn't really very appealing.
:p

For those interested, i just did a MacRumors search and found out on multiple occasions that the Apple store would go down at about 6-7 AM Central.

How disappointing. It is "just" a speed bump, bigger and faster CPUs, and a better video-card. Nothing else. No USB3, no BR, no SATA6, and no lightpeak:mad:

Of course the new ACD is fantastic looking, and I do want one, but at least you get something for the money, a bigger screen.

I would have been but with apple messing us around so much, likely hood is looking bleak. The 27" display is a step done on real-estate and the spec isn't anything to right home about.

I'm really disappointed with the hole thing.... looks like it's playing the waiting game again, this time for Sandy Bridge and apples 3D hyper reality display. Here we go again.

Who will be first to create the Waiting for New New Mac Pro (yes 2 new's there).

New New Mac Pro
Sandy Bridge 40 core Processor
512 Gb ram at 4Ghz
No Hard Drives instead space for 100 SD cards.
Blu Ray as standard
46" 3D retina display
Blah blah blah.

I will be purchasing one in August for freelance motion design. I have an 08 8-core here at work, so I'm looking at the 8-core for home. I used Cinema 4D / CS5

Are you kidding me. Did you really expect these things? Sure the base price didn't "drop" but you get more for your money.

The "upgrade" has been two years in the making, and there is really nothing new under the bonnet. It is faster for sure, and the 12-core machine will be immensely fast and effective, but you are not getting any of the many things buyers have been asking for. The ATi 5870 is nice, but as I state in a previous post, perceived speed is not affected, and neither is functionality.

Nothing should have led you to even believe that stuff would come out. As for speed, rending with a 12-core beast will be much better than an 8-core and 3 times faster than a quad-core. I don't see why people are saying such bad things about it. I'm pretty sure everyone new it would just be new CPUs and GPUs. People on this forum have already said that it would be stupid for Apple to put in USB 3.0, new FW, and anything else like that right now because it would cost them more money when they don't need to change the design. If they include these, it will be when Sandy Bridge comes out, when they will need a new motherboard for the CPUs. I still don't get how someone could actually believe those things would have been announced today, thats just stupid.

I have a 2008 2.8ghz Octocore. If the 5870 is available as an upgrade to me I will most likely keep it for another year or two. If I can't upgrade to the 5870 then I will probably sell it and buy the new MP, most likely 6 core.

hmmm

I just picked up somewhere else on this site, that the ATi HD5870 did not perform significantly better than the HD4870...

Sure youre not thinkin of the 5770? I saw a benchmark with the 5870 and 5770, and the 5770 beat the 4870 is most things, but only by a little bit. And the 5870 is much better than the 5770.

That is nonsense, but it depends what you are doing. For browsing the web etc, any card will do.
