"Far worse" hardware is a bit much, no? The new ones are more likely to be an incremental improvement.

If you can handle the size the 17" MBP remains one of the best notebooks in the world. The 1920x1200 display is spectacular.

I love the 17", I just won't buy one because I need my notebook to be more portable than that. 15" is the biggest I can deal with.

I know exactly what you mean. I love all those UltraPortables that have appeared over the years but I just can't working on the low resolution. It'll be great if Apple could cram in a high resolution display on the popular 15", perhaps make it a BTO option?

I just bought a brand new MacBook Pro 17, matte screen, 1920x1200 LED backlit LCD, 512MB 8600M GT, 4GB of RAM, 320GB hard drive and 3 years of Apple Care for.
$2000 U.S, out the door!!

How and why would I buy the new 15 inch model for $2800?

Screw that!

WOW!! Superb deal!! Come back when you have pics!

I have my new well what was new BTO 17" coming today, which is going straight back for an updated 17" that arrives on Monday. I travel the whole world and my 17" goes with me. I simply can not stand low res screens, I was hoping the 15" had an increase in screen res. If they had I would have jumped on it.

I paid £1806 for the 17" with 3yrs apple care an ipod 8gb and hp printer. Apple are upgrading me to to the new base model for free so I have no complaints. Also I get my rebate back of £155, so brings total expenditure down to £1651.:D

Matte display, 1920 x 1200 instead of 1440 x 900, 2 FW, arguably nicer design.

Anyone with common sense me thinks.

Agree. I wish I bought the 17-inch now. The new look hasn't really impressed me, and the graphics card isn't wonderful either. Having to turn one off to run the other; back in days of PCI cards on PCs on when they could run together, those were the days of power

far worse hardware ?? thats very funny. please give me a real world example where the new model blows the previous gen away..

btw timish nice job on finding that sweet deal!

Considering an update to the 17" is imminent (MW09?), I would say a fool, but a fool with a lot of money. I honestly don't see the point in a 17" notebook. If I need that much space, it's very likely while using said computer on a desk. In that case, buy a 20" monitor for about $200.

To each his own, but the price itself always kept me away from the 17". I use my MBP in clamshell most of the time anyway, so my issues are mainly computer horsepower and the heat not blowing it up.

My wife could not agree more with you, but I change my machine every few months. I love apple toys, but the 17"has always been my baby and if a new one comes out, I will buy that one also. ON the plus side if it is January, I get to enjoy my 17" for 2 and a bit months. :D

Yes actually, I buy my machine s at cost price, use them for a few months or more depending, where I am at the moment then sell it on for what I paid after all associated costs. i.e postage and selling fees. Buyer gets a good deal, and I walk on to my next machine.

Win win situation, especially for me or the better half would kill me. The only pain in the ass used to be setting the new machine sup, but now with time machine, I simply suck it all into the new machine. so even easier.

Just for fun I whittled down Apple's comparison chart to just the distiguishing features...

So the pro's (no pun intented) of the 17'' appear to be larger screen, optional matte screen finish, and an extra firewire port.

The cons are slower CPU speed, slower frontside bus, slower RAM, older graphics card, weaker body construction, larger footprint, heavier, and a $300 wallet hit.

I could never justify buying the 17'' model at this point, but I guess every product has its customer.

Sounds like you could never justify buying a 17" MBP regardless of whether it was updated.

Based purely on speed, the new MBP is probably faster by wha, maybe 5-10% for most apps? If you bought the 17" MBP for productivity rather than a really expensive gaming laptop, the overall specs of the current MBP (not just considering speed) are probably going to be better than the specs of a new 17" MBP!! What happens if the new 17" MBP loses a USB port, or/and a FW port? What happens if you really wanted a matte screen? You can't just "buy" that with regards to the 15", and you can't get it with the new 17" no matter how hard you try. For most people, a matte screen is worth far more than 5% gain in performance. Also, some people don't like the new design.

If I was on the market for a new 17" MBP, I'd get one today. I wouldn't wait for the new one. It'll be inferior for work, because it's going to have a glossy screen, and lets face it, it's going to probably come with one less port for some ridiculous reason. I like the new design, but I also like the old design, and I wouldn't be willing to spend an extra $1000 to get it.

24hr shipping on my new 17" can not wait.

It's nice to have a rebate, even better when your not making the pockets of the tax collector deeper. Well, I'm getting mine tax free!
