It think it's possible Apple is waiting on Intel to produce chips designed for this form factor. As we know, Intel sort of dropped the ball. The fact that this update is late should be no surprise, although it still is.

Would a 2016 MB 12" be worth it if I can pick one up used for around $600 USD today?
For 512GB, probably.

12” MacBook is still a solid choice for those who don’t want a fan (me) and appreciate the ultra-light weight (many).

But, it is confusing having so many overlapping MacBooks at the ~$1200 price point. For virtually everyone, the new Air probably makes the most sense.

The new air is practically the same machine as the nTB 13” pro. So I’d imagine anyone who prefered the MacBook to the 13” nTB yesterday would also prefer it to the MacBook Air today.

God this sucks bigtime.

In the market for real to replace my $3k 15" MBP from 2010.

-Won't drop $3k on another 15" knowing the keyboard is junk because I'd be keeping it well past the 4 year keyboard warranty if going all out on the big daddy. A new 15" is what I really want, but I'm not doing that until they fix the keyboard for real.

So, was going to buy a smaller MB/13" Pro as a stopgap for a year or two until they get it together Apple.

-12" MB was what I really wanted. Failure to update today means no sale since the current iteration is 1.5 years old now and I will only pay Apple Tax at product launch. Also second gen keyboard only. All I needed today was a speed bump and a 3rd gen keyboard (yeah, they're junk, but at least marginally better than the second gen keyboard) and I would've bought, but couldn't even get that.
-13" MBP just doesn't do it for me. I either want my king of the hill 15", or the most portable laptop I can get (12"MB).
-13" Air looks like a pretty good machine overall in a vacuum, but it's not the most portable either.

Basically every possible option is a compromise right now. Nothing stands out as the clear choice based on what I want. I just want the most portable computer with fresh, current specs and a better keyboard - can't have it I guess. Would pretty much have to get the Air on principle alone since it's the most current/fresh choice.

Air has more battery, better performance, better keyboard, more ports, better webcam, better screen, and has touch ID.

MB is fanless,lighter and smaller.

Depends on what are your needs. MBA 13" is the best everyday machine. MB 12" is the better portable.

Meh , I’m happy with my launch day 2017 MacBook i5/512gb , would I buy it today probably not, but I’m more then happy with my fanless 2lb mac..

I’m really digging the new iPad Pro but I own way too many devices that do the same thing so I can’t justify buying it , wish the pro ran Mac OS

Probably someone that likes the 12" fanless form factor. Also finding new ones discounted up to $650 off on Ebay make them a bargain for a solid, portable computer.

So it seems the new MacBook Air is also fanless! I totally didn't expect that. But the footprint and weight difference is what makes the 12" still relevant.

Its not fanless. It uses a 7W processor and has a fan.

I did some more digging and I now see the fan in the x-ray image of it. Apple doesn't talk about it at all. But it's using the fanless Y-series processor and has a fan for when in Turbo Boost mode. So basically it's not using the fans most of the time.

That's like being 'a little pregnant'. The MB is sealed in back, with no moving parts like that.

I think the 12" MB is still a good buy since you get a more portable device with more storage. Also, the new air processor is a "Y" dual core version. Isn't that the same as the M version but renamed to sound like the current Intel processors? I don't understand why Apple couldn't put a U series quad core processor in the Air. I believe Dell put one in their laptop over a year ago and it's around the same size as the Air.

Agreed. Last October I bought a 2017 rMB i5/16/512GB and I am loving it. Would I buy it today? Hell no. But I definitely will not be selling it for a MBA. Love the fanless design.

The new MacBook Air is basically just the 13" MacBook we've been predicting. It uses a Y CPU with no fan, and has the same design, but gets two Thunderbolt ports, Touch ID, and a better FaceTime camera. Perhaps Apple just felt the Air moniker has good brand value so they kept it, but I would have preferred they just clean up the naming and the product lines, because now we have 3 different names for 5 different lines (including two different classes of MacBook Pros, and two different classes of MacBook Airs).

It does seem though that Apple will eventually update the 12" MacBooks with faster CPUs, and they need to drop the price a bit too, and add a second I/O port. The question is when.

Link? I see no fan vents, and the intro video did not show any fan.

Pre October 30th: I wonder why is there MacBook Air around when there is MacBook?

Post October 30th: I wonder why is there MacBook when there is MacBook Air?

Oh, how the things change in the blink of an eye.
Brilliant. This is a very good description.

I'm curious to see how the benchmarks for the new Macbook Air compare to the i7 Macbook. For the same specs, the 7th gen i7 Macbook is $350 more than a 8th gen i5 Macbook Air.

I bet it uses a fan when plugged in and not when it's untethered.
