Just called both the Apple store and local AT&T store. They both said that you could do an upgrade swap at an Apple store but they would have to call the AT&T customer service center to do the swap, which might take more time. But I'm okay with it. :D

I just called the Arden Fair Mall Apple store in Sacramento, CA -- they said they cannot do an upgrade swap by calling AT&T.

It seems like any questions beyond "Will you have iPhones on Thursday" will get you different answers from both AT&T and Apple employees.

If Apple store says they can't do an upgrade swap, can't we just buy the phone on the eligible line and then call ATT to do the swap when we leave the store?

From how I understand it, I think Apple will make you activate the line in-store, effectively killing the phone service of whoever's line you upgraded on. If they don't mind their phone not working for a while (until you get to an AT&T store, do an upgrade swap) then I guess it should be fine. The other person may also need a new SIM card from AT&T but I'm not sure about this.

Unless something is going to change, the phone number mentioned in the article just calls customer service. There are no activation options, et.c

Can someone help me out with this. I'm on a family plan with a few people and we all have iPhones already. I am a secondary line and my line isn't upgrade eligible so I used the primary lines upgrade. Since we both lines already have iPhones can I just activate my iPhone through iTunes or will I have to call AT&T.

You have to call and they will swap the lines, if you do it through iTunes without calling you will screw it up and will need to go to AT&T to get a new micro sim for the IP4

What I am being told is that Apple cannot perform the swap as there system does the entire process for them including activating the sim. I had to go get another sim for the number that will be deactivated. I cannot find a store that has extra micro sims, so I guess after I wait at Apple I then have to go a block down the road to get an extra micro sim.

Has anyonwe been told different? If so, please explain so I can run it by Apple and AT&T.

After reading the link that Dave (thank you!) posted, it seems we just need to inform the Apple rep activating our phone to hold on & let us call AT&T first to switch the numbers. Glad AT&T is implementing this. They have actually been doing a decent job the past couple of weeks!

Basically, if they activate the sim card before they run the upgrade it cant overwrite the system to a new number when Appel tries to activate the sim again?

How long would it be de-activated ? And would you have to buy a new SIM?

it would be deactivated until you get ATT to switch the original sim back to line that was upgraded....or else incoming calls and messages will come through on the new MICRO SIM

no need to buy a new sim, just tell ATT or whoever to put the original sim number back onto the line you upgraded
