This will be my first iPhone and I can't decide if I should get AppleCare+. Any current iPhone owners willing to share their opinions?

Same here, first iPhone, I would personally recommend, in the long run, it seems cheaper and better than going with VZW or another carrier.

Supposedly this was accurate, but is no longer. Considering it covers physical damage, it makes sense that they would make you purchase it up front.

No you don't; you have to buy it at the time of purchase.

You do not have a year to decide. Applecare+ is new and different, and must be purchased at the same time as the phone.

"AppleCare+ must be purchased together with new covered equipment. See AppleCare+ Terms and Conditions for complete product details."

Nice that they are now covering to accidental damage issues...

Service coverage is available only for the iPhone and its original included accessories for protection against (i) defects in materials or workmanship (ii) battery depletion of 50 percent or more from original specification, and (iii) up to two incidents of accidental damage from handling, each incident being subject to a $49 service fee. Replacement equipment that Apple provides as part of the repair or replacement service may be new or equivalent to new in both performance and reliability. See terms at http://www.apple.com/legal/applecare/applecareplusforiphone.html for full details.

The only thing I'm worried about is shattering the glass. A good case can help. But I looked it up, you can buy a glass replacing kit for around 40 on Ebay/Amazon. And iFixit has easy instructions on how to take the glass panels off. So in other words, I won't be spending the money.

If you think your phone might run into other problems, stolen, misplaced, not a DIY person, then I would suggest it.

Yep. And if you get one out-of-warranty replacement with AppleCare+, you save 45%; if you get two, you save almost 60%.

It's definitely worth it if you normally get AppleCare.

Considering that AT&T changed the upgrade policy where if you use your upgrade, you must wait 20 months now until your next upgrade, I might spring on it since that means I will be 8 months out of a warranty when next year rolls around.

So the question I have is, how much is a glass back repair if you don't have Applecare+? How much is a screen shatter?

If it is anywhere in the neighborhood of $150, then it may not be worth it. To me, this is the type of price comparison that could change my mind.

    Apple care discount

When you buy the new iPhone, apple care is usually sold at $65-$70 verses $99 if you buy it later. I dropped my iPhone once and cracked the front screen, apple store personnel replaced it at no charge because I had apple care. I recommend it.

I'd like the option to be able to buy it for my 4 I bought in July.

I'd be willing to take the phone into the store to have it inspected before it taking affect even.

    Oh well.....

Depends. Verizon's insurance also covers lost/stolen phones so if you plan on leaving it around like Apple employees you might want it. I think it's dumb because you pay monthly for it.

I use Sprint's insurance, since it covers everything. ...my son just made use of it, by wading into the ocean with his Evo in his pocket, he hadn't even had it a month.

I'm a VERY clumsy person (my iPod video fell out of my bag a few weeks ago, and my mom backed over it without realizing it was there, breaking the screen :( ), but I'm going with no on the AppleCare+. I'm just gonna go with a really durable case and hope for the best.
