Well, 90% chance of me getting a mac pro as my g5 is around 3 years old now, although it still gets the job done.

100% chance if Snow Leopard comes with it and runs all the current creative apps smoothly :D
I dont think i'll be spending more than UK £2500 though.

Oh and it must be able to connect my current 30" cinema display and wacom cintiq (without using mini display port adapters). I doubt they would make that mistake on pro kit!

Probability theory says that we're looking at Mini DisplayPort on the graphics cards...

But adapters should be included, since they are now.

I am 90% buying one.

A little worried about the price in the UK though. Unless they release something horrible, I'll be buying on release day.

How bad do you think the $$$ will be in the UK?

Well at the current cost of $2799 pre tax in the US, we are looking at an exchange rate of $1.88 to the £1, which in our current state is optimistic - though i doubt it will change too heavily as it will be calculated over a period of time, not purely based on todays market.

With the new price based on $3000
£1587.30 + VAT @ 15%
£1825.40

Just over £100 increase in price of £1712 currently.

As an early-2008 owner I wouldn't even think about it until Snow Leopard is out and I see the kind of performance boost I get out of the OS. Better utilization of 8 cores and the GPU I think will help out all but the most hardcore power users. AND, with the constantly falling prices of <third party> RAM getting 16GB is pretty affordable.

That is pretty much how I feel. My machine is very nice and I don't plan on upgrading to the next version yet. However I do plan on moving from 8-16gigs of ram when snow leopard finally arrives!

I didn't think it was as simple as currency conversion (no matter how the rate is calculated), as it didn't look like it when I would look at various products either from UK vendors or some that ship internationally. Perhaps it was the difference of some prices were with VAT, and others not.

For some strange reason, I also thought the VAT was 20%.

Any way, thanks for the info. :D At least it won't be as bad as I thought.

I hope it isn't priced on the current exchange rate, otherwise $3000 would
come to over £2,300 with VAT! Though I wouldn't be suprised - I've been looking at cycle prices (from Europe) and some of these have risen by nearly 50% since a year ago:(

It's time to say good bye to my G4

I've been waiting a long time for a new mac -the G4 933 actually runs CS3, although the apps load slowly. I'd like to do some more video editing and actually have a FAST computer (my pc is a Dell 9100 with a single core HT chip).

I hope not, I got a mini display port adapter (dvi) for my macbook v5.1 for connecting it to my cintiq and it doesn't cater for the 4 small pins around the end flat pin at the cintiq's fixed DVI-I connector as the apple version seems to be DVI-D and not compatible, damn!!!

'I '(on wacom) and 'D' (Apple mini port adapter) reference:

you curently have to pay £20 extra for the adapters and even more ££ to connect to a 30" display.
Don't tell me I'm going to need a DVI-I -DVI-D adapter as well (if they exist)

They do exist. :)

But why do you need one?
DVI-I can handle either DVI-A or DVI-D.

Hey Deze,
Do you know if this is the same for the wacom 12 cintiq? I'm looking to buy one and never even know about this problem...I saw them hooked up to MacPros at the local reseller and I just assumed it all works out of the box. I'll keep an eye on this issue as i'm waiting on the new mac pro, and i'll either have the tablet before, or right after the purchase.

He's saying that the Mini DisplayPort-DVI adapter is only DVI-D and not DVI-I.

Therefore he can't get his four pins in there.
So the sex is wrong.

DVI-I connectors only use those 4 pins to attach to DVI-A. In a pinch, you can cut them off, and make it DVI-D. Just don't cut the wide pin (tab). :p

I've been looking through the apple (support) forum and the 12" seems to work as it uses the DVI-D

I don't fancy cutting pins off the wacoms DVI -I as the cable is fixed in the back of the wacom within a beefy cable that includes a usb connector also ;-(

Hey Nanofrog,
Thanks for the link for the dvi-i to dvi-d adapter. I'm going to have to check to see if they work!
They will. :) It's just a pass thru connector. (No circuits involved, just point to point wiring).

I would think it's readily available in the UK, but I've been wrong on that assumption before. ;)

I'm sitting down with an early 2008 MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz... Time to upgrade to the monster machine, even though I don't need it! I buy new every year and I was hoping that the Mac Pro would've been released already... I don't want to use my tax return money for anything else...

That´s the spirit,lad!

Keep on turning the economys wheels !!!

I´ll stick with my old 4x3.00 until photoshop can utilize all the cores aviable so that should be around...what...2016?

I personally would use your money on hookers and blow. Way funnier than comparing specs with Tallestskill. I guess.

oops

Ooops my bad!

Just rummaged through my Cintiq's box and looked at the manual where it says: box contents. It actually came with the adapter, duh! I obviously didn't realise back then as i had no use for it as it was rigged straight into my G5's graphics card...

Anyway, Thank you all for being so helpful, sorry if i wasted bandwidth in this thread, but i guess the mini display port concerned me in the compatibility regions, especially if Apple are going to replace the current DVI for mini display ports in the new MP.

Definitely buying the new Mac Pro on day one as long as it's out at the same time or before the HP/Dell competition and maintains its price lead over same.

I always regretted not getting the 3.2 GHz CPUs in my Jan08 Mac Pro 2.8. Too much thumb-twiddling while waiting on h.264 encodes.

Monitor-wise, I was planning on getting a theoretical new 30" Cinema Display (wider gamut, possibly LED backlit) to replace my original 30", but if they continue the trend of offering DisplayPort only and no DVI, I'll have to go with the NEC 3090. I use my 30" display on a KVM with my Mac Pro and a Windows gaming box with a GeFoce 295, and there are no versions of the current high-end gaming cards with DisplayPort :( Nothing above a Radeon 4850.

I used to keep computers for 3-4 years before I would buy a new one. I bought my Mac Pro in June of 2008 and I think this will be one of those times where I keep it 3-4 years before I buy a new one.

I already gave Apple $3,000, they don't need more so soon just for a little more added speed.
