    Hey all.

    Quickly...

I am going to be replacing a SBS server box, and frankly; I am no longer in need of all of it's functions. I am tinkering with the idea of just putting in a SLserver Mac Mini, and call it a day.

    1. I am integrated deeply in the iOS ecosystem as it stands already.
    2. Use  mail, ical, address book already.
    3. I need to run VMFusion on my mac for work as it is now- so I am not in need of windows services against exchange any longer.
    4. I am moving my exchange data to a cloud service.

    However.
I am not as familiar with with osx server as I am with MS, as I have had years of time with Server 03 & 08' along with exchange, iis, isa, proxy, sql, etc.

My biggest concern is that I have a Kyrocera Copystar 5050 Copy machine (monster one:D) and it scans directly to my server via SMB (it can do FTP), and is shared on my Default website for access via all protocols for me when away. I cannot find anything online to say this will work with anything other than a MS environment, however I really am in need to keep this setup as is on this.

I would appreciate any comments from those who feel they may have some insight on my plans, and any pros/cons to take this direction.

I am not considering Lion Server (Should I?)- I hear is dummied down.

    Many thanks in advance.:)

Here is another way you might want to look at this

Your particular Kyrocera supports LDAP and that could easily be your new bridge to emailing scans as PDF attachments.

All OSX Server editions support LDAP authentication to query the OD system. Just like it does in the Windows world. You can have a open access LDAP query or setup an account that is register with OD, like AD, to find user accounts with email addresses.

I also found this video that might help you out on setting up Scan to PDF and EMAIL

    Hope this helps

OS X Server allows you to share folders via SMB if you want. It used to be able to do FTP too, but i think they scrapped that in Lion Server if i recall. You can share the same folder via WebDAV too, so iOS devices should be able to connect to your servers folders :)

Thanks for the link, seen it a zillion times as it's the only one around really- but that was nice to post it. Either way, I do also have it set up to email out, but that bogs down the process of having it save directly to a webDav shared folder via SMB.

this is good news, I am not too keen on the FTP portion, but the SMB is good news. Now just to find documentation on kyrocera to see if it will talk with the mac protocol.

Thanks for the tips and help posters.

SMB is the protocol, are you talking authentication?
