Well if you don’t mind the styling that is.

The Apple Watch is after all a fashion piece too. It’s not just a computer on your wrist with good specs. A lot of people dress up their Apple Watch when going out, not sure if most people would wear the ultra for this purpose.

For that reason I’d argue it’s less versatile than the regular S8
Funny you think that. For me the new rugged styling is just what I want in a watch. I do a lot of physical work while wearing my watch and always have been afraid my Apple Watches might get damaged (still wear them though). Now that worry will be less!!
Rugged is a fashion statement too. We are not all hipsters and/or suit wearing office cattle!

That’s like saying who is the Apple Watch for. People tracking their heart rate sitting on the couch.

This is basically another one of those bait template threads that pops up anytime Apple releases a new product (ie. M2 MacBook Air) where the OP makes outlandish sweeping generalizations and/or horribly misguided assumptions on the people who are simply excited about a new product. This is only done to ruffle feathers & stir up unnecessary controversy on the forum. It's usually followed by radio silence/tucking tail between the legs from the OP while they sit back & watch the fireworks.

From personal experience, these types are usually people who:

A. Had unrealistic expectations for the product & are going scorched earth as a result.
B. Actually want the product but can't afford it & are going scorched earth as a result.
C. Here to play devils advocate for unknown reasons.
D. Get their joy from killing others excitement for unknown reasons.

But...OP is so serious athlete.

Srsly tho, questions for The Athletes:

If I cancel my Ultra order and buy a Garmin instead, am I automatically a real™ athlete, or is there a waiting period?

And, though I disagree, my cardiologist always refers to me as an athlete, so would it be possible to keep the Ultra, but get a note from him that would allow me into the club?

And then finally, how large an array of ANT+ devices does one need to prevent me from snickering at your bike weenie outfit?

They’re obviously going after Garmin Users but Garmin users won’t switch to this, we’re a loyal bunch. Some mentioned this being the Ford F-150 of watches, couldn’t have put it better myself.

That battery life is still rubbish, great for Apple standards yes, crap when comparing it to Garmin, Coros, Suunto Standards,

Pretty impressive that you've apparently spoken to every Garmin user & came to this conclusion.

Longtime Garmin user here. My AW arrives a week from today.

iPhones support two watches.

End of story.

Oh .. you surprise me … you’ve been banging on about how crap the battery life is and other aspects of the Ultra (before you’ve even seen it) and yet you use one of the low end Garmins with an estimated 24 hour battery life if you use it for sport.

You stated earlier ‘we’ are a loyal bunch referring to Garmin users …. How long have you been so loyal ? You were using an AW for fitness and a G shock not that long ago or did you use all 3 ?

Oh a post history hunter. I've been using since start of summer, For fitness only, Gshock other times, the AW is gone as battery was so crap. Garmin I charge once every 5/6 days, thats after usually 3/4 runs and 3 strenght sessions

the distinction will be more software based than hardware. Does it connect to bike cadence and power meters. Does it still disable vo2 calculation if you connect an external hrm. Does the software track shoe milage so you know when to change them. There is more to chasing the sports market than just putting a bigger battery in.

That’s fair enough ….. I just ask because you paint yourself as some long time ‘loyal’ Garmin user who would never switch but in reality it’s been a few weeks ….. be interesting to see how you get on longer term …… I’ve previously switched Garmin and AW and ended up sticking with AW now for a long time, mainly because my days of marathons and long training runs are long gone. As always it’s horses for courses and personal choice. Doesn’t make one device bad or another good contrary to many posts.

I use a series 7 for hiking, running and some indoor biking. It’s fine for all of this but I don’t train properly nowadays. I used to (until injuries and life changes got in the way) do a lot of endurance sport including Ironman triathlons. I would never have used an Apple Watch for that and always used a Garmin. when I consider the normal Apple Watch I can’t see how it could work for any of the training I used to do, even if the battery life is better. So the key with the ultra is how have apple changed it Vs the standard Watch? The extra button is a definite plus but can the Watch be operated fully with the screen locked? that is essential when the Watch screen is wet. Will it connect to ANT+ power meters on a bike? Will it connect to heart rate straps? Will it do proper interval tracking in the pool? Will it time the transitions in a triathlon and not just the three sports? i think it now pre-locks GPS which is a good thing. Many more questions I wonder about so will be interested to see the reviews.

Also surprised about the big deal they made regarding dual frequency GPS. This is of course a great thing but why don’t they also support Galileo? I pretty sure Garmin do if I remember correctly
