it has always seemed like there is people complaining that the 4.7" doesnt get the same treatment as the + and then later they add these features. Seems like there more differentiation between the two models then the iPhone 6 6+ launch.

Hmmmmm... its not EXACTLY an upsell, its more like the difference between buying a CAR and buying an SUV. You should be able to get high end models of both. I understand what they mean, people want the great camera with 2 lenses but don't want a huge big phone.

It's a legitimate gripe.
And not wanting to deal with a huge phone is why I'm upset that I can't get the better camera.

The 4.7 is the largest I can handle pain-free on a regular basis, but the camera upgrade to the Plus is really making me jealous. I didn't care as much last time, when it was just image stabilization, but this is a big difference. :(

I see this as less of a difference. Without OIS in the 6S, the 6S+ will always take better pictures.

From my understanding both the 7/7+ have the same main camera. So all your photos without zoom will look just as good as the 7+. This is in comparison to where the 6S photos never look as good as the 6S+

Because it is bigger, Apple can fit two cameras in. They want to use what space they have to make their phones as good as possible.

What you are essentially asking for is Apple to purposely hinder the Plus model to appease people buying the cheaper 7 who want to complain. Not how it works.

The main feature IMO is the "bokeh" effect which isn't even available yet. They said it'd be available in a free software later this year. The fact they didn't even give a month (like they did with the AirPods for example) I'm thinking it might even be early next year.

Why was this "bokeh" effect a fun task for the engineers? They should have been working on it for ages and it shouldn't have been labelled as a "fun task". Also the dual-camera which everyone was getting excited about can ONLY do 2x optical zoom?

I'm not saying the dual-camera is rubbish, I'll I'm saying is that really, the 7 and 7 Plus, in camera terms, aren't far apart.

how many 4.7" people are mad about the increased differentiation of them both?

The Plus has always been at a sort of disadvantage IMO - it needs to use more memory to cope with its higher screen resolution and the original 6 Plus was a real dog of a performer. The 6 still runs well today but anyone that bought a 6 Plus would have likely already upgraded by now or will be upgrading real soon.

Lower battery life and less space for physical components like dual cameras are a given when you're looking at a smaller phone, the RAM difference doesn't matter much, and the Plus processor still have to work harder because of the process of rendering for the weird Plus screen resolution. Its not all gravy with the Plus like you might think.

Get a phone that's right sized for you is primary, although I can see why some might want the camera setup of the Plus (but you'd end up with even less battery life then, something has to give to make room). For similar reasons the Mini iPads will always seem to be lesser siblings to the Air/Pros... you need physical room in the form factor for some of these improvements.

See the extra step the Plus has to perform (downsampling) for screen rendering, plus each screen render at a higher initial resolution is much more costly too (you get this if you've gamed on PCs and know how video cards work, the higher your resolution goes, the more your frame rates drop, the Plus render involves ~2.5x more pixels or simply put its more than twice the amount of work it takes to render for the 4.7)...

I'm personally disappointed about the dual camera. I was expecting this setup to bring greater advantages.
Bokeh effect feels more like a gimmick to me. And only 2x zoom?

OIS was the bigger deal to me.

Not disappointed.

Here are the "advantages" of the Plus:

- Dual cameras: a work-in-progress, with the full potential not realized this year

- 3GB: the Plus model needs an extra GB to push the larger screen and dual image processing. So it's not an "advantage" of the 7 Plus, simply a necessity to match the performance of the 7.

- Larger screen: the tradeoff is overall larger size, which is not only harder to hold, but more annoying in the pockets (especially if you tend to do a lot of active outdoors stuff). I have an iPad if I feel like reading on a larger screen.

- Longer battery life: see above. The tradeoffs of size and bulk are simply too large.
