I used to jailbreak.

Most of what I used to jailbreak to obtain is legitimately available now, however.

The new tethering plan from AT&T in conjunction with the firmware change that allows an obvious, easy to use switch was the last straw for jailbreaking. I just don't do it any more.

There's one thing they need to fix, though: There is no way to implement a call and text firewall via the firmware. [Had a second thought and edited here.] You're stuck having to set the default ringer to null and then assigning ringers for the contact list.

So, I wish Apple would give us a call firewall or find a way for iBlacklist or MCleaner to make their way into the App Store!

But they've come a long, long way if that's the only reason I'd have left to jailbreak, IMHO.

The iP4 I use is from my company; a jailbreak would be possible but from IT securiy aspect nothing I would do. Plus I don't have a need for it.
I did that on an older iPod just to try it once and sneak around in the filesystem via shell. Was fun but finally also restored /upgraded to nonJB. Don't have any need for JB.
If I want to play with a shell I still can use Mac OS or Linux.

The only exception would be: tethering ... But again it's company device so I will not do it. Good boy !

I use my 2nd gen iPod touch a lot, and jailbreaking it simply enhances the experience! The stock iOS is great, but all the extras with jailbreaking makes it AMAZING to use. Jailbreaking it was probably the best thing to ever happen on iOS devices. Long live Jailbreaking!

The only reason I jailbreak is to use lockdown and protect my emails. Otherwise, I've never really cared too much about customizations especially after noticing and comparing performance with and without winterboard.

Guess all those other people having issues in the hacks forum are just jailbreaking it wrong ;)

I will agree that people do install mods/tweaks that can cause issues but have you have taken a look at the Apple forums? The Apple forums are full of people with problems and they are running stock firmware.
The reason people usually come to a forum is to get help so of course all you will see are issues. Most of the people without problems aren't going to create a thread about not having issues.

+1 a forum is a horrible place to gauge how faulty a product is there are not many raving threads about how well it works lol

I jailbroke my old 3G on 4.x and it went from a bog slow device to a rebooty glacial slow device. Restoring it went back to bog slow so I sold it and got an iPhone 4.

havent jail broken since my second iphone. then i just didn't feel like it for my third (3gs) and now with my iPhone 4 i have a dev account so its not very practical. i have the ipod touches in the house jail broken though, also debating it for my ipad.

I like getting useful apps/tweaks/utilities like gridlock to place my icons where I want them... because I actually like to see the faces of my kids on the wallpaper.:p. Infinidock and infinifolder helps me to condense all my apps and easy access. I just jailbreak to enhance my experience on my iPhone.

And in other news (I haven't done this), but you can stop Apple's location tracking with untrackered. Not sure why they need to track, but there is a good chance that this won't be available in the iTunes app store.;)

I was all ready to jailbreak and than, realized that jailbreak wasn't available for the newest update. I was saddened. :(

I think imma go back "stock" since I only JB'd so I could tether. I got the dreadful ATT email yesterday so now I don't really see a need to be JB'd in my case. I don't care too much for the whole customization thing.

Jailbreak is worth it for SBSettings, iFile, and Lockinfo. But of course, the main thing to jailbreak is to unlock the phone and sell it.

There is a ton of ignorance and misinformation in this thread. (not stupidity, necessarily). The most popular statement in this thread being reiterated is, "I choose reliability over eye candy." The funny thing is, I agree:

First of all, many "problems" arise from a lack of following simple directions. Warning! Your wheel could roll right off the car, or you could be electrocuted! So does that mean no one should attempt to change a tire, or even a light bulb? Why people choose to ignore installation guides is beyond me.

-Regardless, the talk of "problems" is irrelevant: Jailbreaking is completely reversible. It's not a leap of faith, point of no return, etc. You can abort the mission at anytime and return to stock. So if the problems outweighed the benefits, most would reverse the process. If you want to even remotely gauge the success rate, you shouldn't count the problem threads, but the threads stating the user is going back to stock. But again, you won't get a response from most of us without problems. The forum is for help - no need to clutter the board with "yay! I love my jailbroken Iphone - no problems!"
-Also, for many (dare I say most) of us, jailbreaking does not = "playing". It's done for efficiency, performance, and notification purposes, not "eye candy."
-Jailbreaking a waste of time? Ironic considering it took a few minutes and now with lockscreen notifications, the time saved is endless. Quite honestly, when used for business, I'm not sure how one can live with the lack of notifications.
-Jailbreaking is what you make of it. You are not forced to load custom themes or any apps that drain battery life. You can also remove any apps that you try and don't like.
-Just remember when you go into stock settings and think "Hmm, wish it could do this, or do that", it probably does and probably can. :) I wanted the stock OS to do everything (mainly notifications) I need it to. It just doesn't.

This is in no way meant to berate stock users. I'm merely offering confidence and perspective to those who do not fully understand the purpose and process. To each his own. If your wishlist for Iphone improvements is empty, I completely understand why jailbreaking is not necessary for you. But there's no need to scare off those on the fence using fear tactics and spreading misinformation.

I have been JB most of the since the original iPhone so I am very familiar with the pros and cons. However with each iOS update my need/desire to JB has deminished. Since 4.3 I have been stock and probably won't be returning to cydia. Native tethering was the last piece that I was waiting for.

Here is a brief list of what I didnt like about JB:
Waiting months for the iPhone Dev team to bless each release
Winter board instability on many of the more interesting themes
Instability with many of the more interesting JB apps
Poor support from most JB app developers (inexcusable for paid apps)
Native apps crashing due to theme conflicts
Activator quirks conflicting with the UI in many games
Cydia itself (slow and overflowing with ads)
It seems like most JB tweaks had some weird side effect with the native UI

For the record I will miss "Navigate with TomTom", "Weather Icon" and "Click to Snap"

JB if you want, but for me stock iOS offers a better experience.

(JB reminds me of desktop Linux 10 years ago)

why not?

You're missing out.

If I have to choose between an iPhone and jailbreak, I'll choose the jailbreak. :D

If someone wants to jailbreak their phone, that's perfectly fine. It's their choice and should be totally up to them.

But, I have a problem with someone telling me that I have to jailbreak my iPhone. I know what jailbreaking is and what it does. I've done it for other people if they've asked to have it done on their iPhones. And if something comes up that I decide that I want to jailbreak my iPhone, then I'll do it then.

But right now, it works just fine for me without it. So, I see no need for me to do it.

Being pushy about getting people to jailbreak their iPhones to me is just as bad as people who make a stink at those who DO jailbreak their phones. I'm not gonna bug you about what you do with your phone. Don't bug me about what I do with mine.

Back on iOS 1.0 - 2.0 (sorry, iPhone OS 1 - 2), my 2G never touched stock firmware once. These days iOS4 is pretty good and I can't think of a reason why I'd jailbreak it.

When I need to hack into my fridge whilst on the move (or just acquire a penchant for increasingly ridiculous alternative UI's), I'll TOTALLY be on board again.

Jailbreak was fresh and cool...

...back in 2008.

Most of the App Store apps was garbage at the time and many basic features like video recording were missing on iPhone. I customized my 2G like crazy and added some useful apps like Intelliscreen (for free). Now it is no big deal. I do miss a few things like SBSettings, but I can live without them.

The last time I jailbroke my iPhone, it created a lag when I was controlling my apple TV. There is nothing a jailbreak adds that I care enough about to try it again.
