with Dreamboard I can run a really nice OS7 theme, or Droid them whenever the mood strikes. Keeps me from wanting any other phone when my iPhone can satisfy all my curiosities.

The only app I want is biteSMS.

I really miss that now that I am no longer jailbroken. iphone does seem to run much better though!

Jailbreak was fresh and cool...

...back in 2008.

Most of the App Store apps was garbage at the time and many basic features like video recording were missing on iPhone. I customized my 2G like crazy and added some useful apps like Intelliscreen (for free). Now it is no big deal. I do miss a few things like SBSettings, but I can live without them.

what an extremely ridiculous statement. The "Apple approved" apps in the app store don't even come close to doing what jailbreak apps and utilities and modifications can do. are you kidding me

A lot of the problems come from newbies who are too lazy to do their read and research; JBing is easy, but maintaining it is harder. 99% of the problems posted are easily remedied and don't require a post. The main problem I have with JBing is the occasional times the phone turns itself off. However, it's easily remedied.
Personally, I JB for the following:
-ultrasnow: I like to travel, but I don't like to pay AT&T's roaming rates; I unlock with this software. I maintain my bb so I can use a pay as you go SIM whether I'm in England, France or Mexico.
-tetherme: I have an unlimited plan, but AT&T doesn't offer an tethering add on. For the times I need to tether, I use this.
-open notifier: I now have a mail, phone or text icon in my status bar.
-iretiner gui: Now I have retina-quality icons on all apps from the app store

However, I don't jack up the appearance of my phone with those hideously ugly themes. Just like anything else, you can do as much or as little as you want with JB.
As much of you already said, I love the reliability of a non-jailbroken iPhone. I see threads (on a ton of forums) filled with pages and pages of problems people are having with there jailbroken iPhones. It seems that a large part of jailbreaking includes problems that go along with it. I'm totally fine with my non-jailbroken iPhone and so far, I haven't had 1 problem.

If I were a teenager again, i'd probably be all about jailbreaking. I just don't have the time or interest these days.

This. I am intrigued by the idea of JB. But honestly don't have the time to fiddle with it.

Did the root thing on my android and was cool but that phone took over my life! The iPhone works and just kills it everytime.

It absolutely amazes me how many people think that jailbreaking makes your iPhone slower and will kill battery life. Also, people thinking that Apple is more secure and we should trust them more? We just found out that they've been tracking everywhere that we have been since last June.... C'mon people.

Jailbreaking unlocks the full potential of your phone. You don't necessarily need themes, which I see a lot of people complaining that it takes too long to choose a theme and customize stuff, but in reality, most stuff is install and it's ready to go.

Bitesms is the thing that keeps me jailbreaking again and again, once you use that you just can't use the default messaging app again. And SBsettings is AMAZING too. I could get a lot more in depth with tweaks and themes that I use but it's all out of personal preference. However, I do think that everyone should have bitesms and SBsettings.

Jailbreaking doesn't lessen the quality or performance of your iDevice, but rather improves upon it. It's stable and is a great community of people trying to help you get the most of your money and unlock the potential of your device. It's not about the flashy looks, that's themes, it's about the convenience and productivity that certain jailbreak apps and tweaks can bring to your device. Some people have the completely wrong impression of jailbreaking.

Had my iPod touch 2nd gen for two years, replaced it with a 4th gen in September, and have never jailbroken them. I find no need, my iPod already does what I want it to, and reliability and security is better than extra "cool" features.

*sigh* do you not read other people's posts?? Well let me inform you, I consider myself a jailbreak expert of sorts and talk to a lot of the highly esteemed jailbreakers that contribute the most to the jailbreak community. THERE ARE NO BLEEPING SECURITY RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH JAILBREAKING YOUR DEVICE.

I thought of this thread when I read a tweet from author Chuck Klosterman's today....

"Why do so many people assume their personal motives for doing things are (somehow) universal?"

My 3GS was jailbroken. Have not JB'd the iPhone 4 as I have no real need. I've got official tethering (Verizon), I've got the apps I need and I also use my phone for work email and our IT people frown upon jailbroken iPhones.

So, while I could jb my iPhone or iPad, I'm not really interested in doing so.

for me, it seems you kinda have to JB to get the full use of this phone, the fact alone that I can add intelliscreen so I dont have to unlock my phone every time a new email/text comes in is awesome. The notification system on the iPhone is a joke but if you JB it, you can make it perfect. Hopefully iOS5 adds a better system being that the current one falls behind most other phones

other reasons I JB (and the phone is still VERY reliable with great battery life)

PDANet
infinidock
infinifolders
intelliscreen
multiflow
activator (best config tool IMO, Finally can get to my favorites again off the home button, PATHETIC that apple took options like that away)

Of course there is a security risk involved. "Sigh" all you want to but anytime you install ANY app, there is a security risk... You have no clue what is actually in that app other than what the description says. That, coupled with the removed safeguards from the jailbreak that are built into iOS and you have a serious problem as far as IT security goes.

There is a reason that every app in the app store is approved by Apple. Call it freedom if you like but just know that you're rolling the dice every time you install an unapproved app.

I jailbreak for a handful of tweaks that greatly enhance my experience, not for free apps or eye candy.

MyWi
BiteSMS
No Lock Screen
No Spot
Fake Clock Up
My3G
SBSettings
Folder Enhancer
Phone Closer
Syncronicity
iBlacklist

and most importantly,
Phone and SMS Google Voice extensions

I see you have no lockscreen on yours. I was wondering if you updated to 4.3.1 and have issues with the slider appearing with everything else gone on the lockscreen

Rolling the dice every time? Wow. Why would anyone jailbreak? What removed safeguards? Do you have specific examples of security breaches involving jailbreaks or jailbroken apps or are you just generalizing?

I went from 4.2.1 to 4.3.2 and on 4.3.2 it actually unlocks faster, whereas on 4.2.1 I could still see the lock screen for a split second before it went to the springboard.

I use NoLockScreen, I had no luck with NoLock

Important to note is that 2 apps I don't have on my jailbroken iPhone are Winterboard and Installous.
If there are issues with performance and security, I believe its from those 2.

I'm so sick of people listing jailbreaking and talking about free apps. Its never occured to me to try to use installous.
I just want those few tweaks. Mainly how I can use my google voice number natively with the extensions from the stock phone and stock (or in my case BiteSMS) messaging apps

I've jb by phone twice and both times within a week it locked up on me and had to be completely wiped clean and restored.

False. It removes the sandbox restrictions on apps. Anything you download can now possibly have access to the system settings / files that are not available to unJB'ed phones. That's how jailbreaking gives you access to a lot of the "super cool features". Unfortunately, it's also a huge security risk.

Plus, you're trusting the developers to not inject malicious code into the apps you're installing.

If you can't see the potential for attack vectors in either/both of those things, there's not much I can do to explain them more.

I've never jailbroken mine, I just wouldn't use the benefits of it to outweigh the risks involved
