i'll be honest, i've never tried thunderbird, but i just mail. it seems to work fine, so like they say 'if it aint broken, dont fix it'

i may try thunderbird sometime tho, i have more than one email and altho mail can have multiple accounts i think it would be easier to just have a seperate app for each.

I like Mail. I've used Thunderbird on Linux before and I'm not a fan. I don't know why.

Mail + GMail == Perfect.*

*until Mail starts asking you for a password each time it checks your mail!

I used to use entourange, but it made too many annoying noises, so i switched to Thunderbird, which had poor IMAP support, so i switched to Mail, which works perfectly for me.

I would probably move (from Eudora) to Mail, but it seems to have one fatal flaw, by not letting you change the "subject" of an in-message. Here is a quote from another forum:
merely not being able to change the subject line is reason not to contemplate a complete switch to Mail. How many subject emails do you get with the subject line "Our conversation" or similar. It's a pain unless you can change that to "John Smith, IBM, Meeting about XYZ."

Why would Apple not let us do something that Eudora has let us do for a long time, that is so useful and important? Basically, this means I probably won't want to use Mail. Is there any way, in Mail, to change an inbox subject?

Mail forgets passwords

I'd like to use Mail, but it too frequently forgets passwords.

I have had lots of trouble with Mail (on 3.5 now). This is the biggest annoyance. It regularly forgets passwords and you have to type them in. There are complaints about this going back years. I have read that this may be because the server takes too long to answer, but mine pop up as soon as I hit Get Mail or Send. I complained about it on an Apple support forum and my message was deleted. They don't want to talk about it...

Definitely love mail.app

Used thunderbird on mac when I first switched years ago, but when tiger came out, I started using Mail full time.

By the way, thunderbird stores your mail as .mbox files, which are fully compatible w/ mail. If you use mail's import wizard, and choose "mbox files" from the list of choices you can import your thunderbird mailboxes directly and have them in mail.

Entourage is the worst, most overcomplicated piece of email software I've ever seen. Plus it can have a ton of issues with the proprietary database file it uses that can have to be rebuilt. I've experienced many many problems with people I know who use Entourage.

… It regularly forgets passwords and you have to type them in. ...

I've found it doesn't actually 'forget' them. If you cancel the box asking for your password and then go to mail and ask it to 'get mail for this account' it will do just that, without another prompt for your password.

at MR. most people will prefer any apple products over 3rd party apps. you should just try for yourself.

I fall into this category not because I'm one of those "fan boys". I just really like the seamless integration you get when you use Apple products, i.e. my address book contacts are searched through my mail incrementally (I love that). I'm not sure if Thunderbird does that but I don't need to find out.

I like using mail. all the integrated mac programs work well together.

Mail will hopefully be even better with snow leopard, because it will have exchange support =)

I really only have one drawback to each program.

Mail--doesn't work correctly with the IDLE command on my IMAP server, for whatever reason. Therefore mail does not show up instantly, but it does in Thunderbird. I can't even click the fetch mail button to get new messages off the server when I know they are there (like after they show up on my phone or in Thunderbird, for example). It is a perpetual delay (which I am SURE is the fault of the hosting company I use and not a bug in mail).

Thunderbird--has a terrible search function. As of now we can only search by sender or subject, with no way to search the body of messages. Apparently that is one of the enhancements that will be coming in the future.

Both work well, but I am sticking with Mail, at least until the search thing is figured out. I can live with having to wait a few minutes longer for mail to arrive, but not being able to fully search the body of messages is a big drawback.

I *used* to love mail...

then I set up a new IMAP account and a known IMAP bug in mail took down the all school's mail servers... over and over and over...

They kindly asked me to switch to Thunderbird. I missed the Mail interface.

I now use Postbox and have been really happy with it.

Mail by far

Mail is so much better than ThunderBird 2 or 3. Although Thunderbird has some features Mail doesn't, it is bulky, and doesn't sync with IMAP correctly. Plus, Mail has stationary.

I haven't tried Thunderbird but Mail works sufficiently for what I need it to and that's to read and send e-mail messages with my Gmail account, it hasn't given me any problems.
