Fully prepared for the flaming as I know how these forums in particular are ,but I feel this needs to be said as it infuriates me every bloody year.

Seriously, who really cares about the Pro cameras? I mean really? How good does a camera need to be for the ’normal’ user? Or are you honestly telling me this is a forum of true photo enthusiasts who take countless photos each day?

I am still using an iPhone XS and for the odd snap and video here and there it takes absolutely fantastic pictures.

Why oh why oh why are people so drawn to the damn cameras? And why oh why do Apple seem to think everyone cares that much? I couldn’t give a rats behind about everything they say year on year about the ‘best’ camera ever, as long as the odd photo I take looks nice it means absolutely zero to me.

Why don’t they concentrate on upgrading things people actually care about like the notch, which quite frankly is completely unacceptable in 2020 and an absolute embarrassment to Apple, considering I can buy a £200 chinese phone from Amazon which doesn’t have one. And where are features like 120hz?

This is now going to be the third iteration since the iPhone X and what has REALLY changed since then? Very little apart from ‘ooooh this chip is our fastest ever and oooh we now have blah blah number of lenses’

I love iPhones, and used to really look forward to my new one each year, but its sad how it just seems to be let down after let down these days.

Ill be skipping this year again.

Flaming can start now.....

The camera is probably the single biggest feature I look forward to every year. But I'm a photographer who shoots primarily with an iPhone these days.
Then I 100% understand why you would buy one. I just think Apple need to concentrate more and ‘give’ more to those of us who are not photographers or photo enthusiasts and just want some nice NEW tech in our phones.Which surely must be the majority of iPhone owners.

Everyone said the photos on cameras were great 5 years ago. Small incremental upgrades are what has got us to where we are now.

Many do and breakthrough cameras is what is there to pull people in each year...

why does apple think everybody cares? By their profits is likely how...go buy a £200 android phone then but it won’t come close to the iphone experience.

notch won’t be going anywhere until under display camera is ready so seems pointless doing anything with it now.

What are you looking for in terms of advancements?

Photography is one of the biggest innovations to come to smartphones
I already listed two, which I know I am definitely not alone in wanting.

You only have to look at the latest Samsung Galaxy phones to see what tech is actually out there and available to consumers. Instead we are stuck with a design that’s basically 4 years old. Hell it was only very recently that Apple ditched the iPhone 8 with its massive bezels!

Virtually bezeless phones have been a ‘thing’ for years now and at very cheap prices.

There is simply no excuse.

I would say socially active people and those who travel. So that's quite a number of people. You don't need to be a photo enthusiast to enjoy a better camera.

Night mode front camera is a very nice feature to have.
Again..not being a photo enthusiasts can you HONESTLY tell me you can see a huge difference in quality for just the odd social and travel snap? I highly doubt the majority of people can or even care

Which was exactly my point

I do like the camera improvements, and it seems to be something people in general get excited about with new phone generations. I was spoiled growing up with Nokia's great camera implementations (particularly fond memories of the N8) Not sure it's worth a £150-200 premium in isolation, though. This year it seems to be the major differentiator between the regular and pro models, and even then the bigger difference is only for the Pro Max.

Ok so for this who do actually care about the camera (if you say so), do you not think those of us who couldn’t give a monkeys deserve something to get excited about?

Surely you can understand there are others who want to see more?

For me, the ultra-wide lens and Night mode changed how I use the iPhone camera. Photos that were impossible before are now possible.

Things like Deep Fusion don't make much of a difference to me. But Night mode on ultra-wide and the front camera will.

If you go to any social gathering, the front camera is probably being used. At at an evening event, Night mode is essential.

The camera is the most important feature of the iPhone to me and was the entire reason I upgraded to an 11. I for one don't give a rats behind about the notch and don't get why so many people obsess about it - they are packing a lot more tech into that notch than the cheap Chinese phones you mention.

save the $500 and buy a real camera... there are man small cameras in in the $500 range that will blow any iPhone Pro camera out of the water by a long shot.... of course, that's assuming one doesn't mind the extra bulk and inconvenience of carrying an extra camera on a daily basis... also. one has to really want top quality photos to be willing to carry a real camera around. (then again, if anyone's serious about photos, he/she probably be happy with just iPhone 's built-in cameras to being with)???

Well, on the plus side, if you don't care about having the better camera, the cheaper 12 is a fantastic deal as it improves even over the 11 Pro in a lot of areas. Better chip, better water resistance, MagSafe accessories, bigger screen, lighter, £250 cheaper at the 64GB tier...

My instagram profile is all I need to say about why I care about the camera...

All shot on iPhone. I stopped carrying a dSLR with me when I travel. Looking forward to more telephoto, better long exposure features at night, the quality that comes along with a larger sensor and better image stabilization on the new phone.

I do. Because I have a family with kids and don’t want to lug around my Nikon D90 dSLR but also want to be able to capture great videos and pictures. I don’t think my use case is all that unique either.

And my iPhone XS takes fantastic front camera pics and pretty decent low light pics, perfectly acceptable to post on social media or show to friends.

Which again is my point, unless you are a photographer who is going to develop them and potentially blow them up in size does anyone else really need any better?

Fine, let Apple upgrade the cameras, just not at the expense of doing anything else new to their phones, which unfortunately seems to be their strategy for the last 3 years.

This is 100% true. Stick with 12 if you don’t care about the camera because even the LiDAR feature is primarily for camera which you don’t give a damn about.

The cameras are literally the most important feature to me and every single member of my family. We all shoot a lot of video as well as the iPhone is so damn good at it.

I'd wager the camera is the single most important feature to the majority of people.

I don't even carry my DSLR anymore as my iPhone crushes it in low light and most other scenarios. It's very disappointing that optical zoom is still only 2x in. The 2x out doesn't really do much for me personally. It's a bit of a swindle how they claim the phones are 4x/5x when they aren't in the traditional sense.

This is a weird take. The camera is literally the only thing I look forward to every year. And the improvements have been really good over the X/XS.

Also for the younger generation, camera improvements are important (social media).

The camera on the 11 is a significant improvement over the XR/XS series - especially in low light. The images are also much sharper. I can definitely tell the difference and after my Mom and sister saw how great the photos from my 11 were, they both went out and upgraded to an 11 as well. From my perspective the camera definitely drives upgrades!
