The Pro 6.1" size has always hit a sweet spot for me and I have never had any desire before to go for a Max, however as camera use is my biggest thing with my phone then the longer zoom lens persuaded me to try it this year. I thought that it would be an interesting experiment at least, and, as it's not going to be the last iPhone I ever purchase, one I could reverse in future generations.
Before I talk about the size, weight and usability I would just mention that so far - and it's only a week in - I'm thinking I might find less use for the 5x zoom than I did for the 3x one on my 14 Pro, but early days and all that.
Anyway, the user experience is a mixed bag so far. The positives: I have it sitting on a stand at work and am enjoying the extra screen space, especially when I watch television programmes on it. There's certain apps I have only ever used on my iPad before like Duolingo which I have successfully migrated now to my phone. Reading newspapers and newspaper apps is doable now in a way it wasn't with my Pro and I have a few games I play on my iPad Mini which I am going to try out on the phone too. In an ideal world I might be able to retire my iPad Mini and get by with my Pro Max and my big iPad Pro.
The extra battery life I have nothing really to comment on. I was fine with what I got from my 14 Pro and rarely ever go home at the end of the day with anything less than 65% anyway. I'm sure the Max is better still, but I am not tracking this in any meaningful way. I also have no issues with the weight. It feels perhaps marginally heavier than my 14 Pro, but I think my feeling on picking it up was surprise that it felt lighter than expected - a common perception people seem to have here. I also have no issue with it being a phone you cannot really use one-handed anymore.
So plenty of positives and only one real negative for me which is, of course, that extra physical size. If I am walking about I usually listen to podcasts and am often taking my phone out of my pocket, fiddling with something then putting it back in. This is a really unwieldy experience with the Max - it feels too big sitting in my pocket in the first place, whether jacket or trouser. Then to remove it from either is something you have to give thought and care to rather than it being a mindless action, because you are always conscious that you might catch the end of the phone on the opening of your pocket and drop it. Every time I reach for it I am acutely aware of this potential pitfall.
Now I've never been the sort of person who drops my phone, but with all my phones I have bought an Apple silicone case anyway, more as I like the grippier feel it gives you when taking pictures, especially in summer when your hands are sweaty. When I acquired my 15PM last week I thought I would try the experiment of not using a case this year, but that lasted but a day before I went my usual case route. This was not because I had any close run things with it, simply that the in-and-out of pockets thing is so fraught that I was convinced an accident would be inevitable at some stage.
I'm conscious that by the time a new iPhone comes out that I might want to buy then I will be well acclimatised to this size, though the rumours suggest future Max iterations are going to be even bigger, but as of today at least I think I would likely opt for the smaller size again as long as we see a return to feature parity.
