I import CDs into iTunes (lossless, of course). For movies-- nah, my mac doesn't play blurays. I do watch a lot of prime video and netflix on my imac.

The CD drive is noisy.

But the DVD player is absolutely great for vintage DVD movies like:

Well, I'm not sure about Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but the Princess Bride is awesome in HD.

Like many others here, my optical drive primarily used for ripping content, not for playback.

Because I mostly listen to classical music and opera, finding cheap physical media is quite easy (thank you Second Spin) and usually at a price that is less expensive than lossy digital tracks at the iTunes Music Store. There's always the library as well.

I only have a few Blu-ray discs but they can be ripped as well. Although forum policy forbids people from posting links to documents describing this process, a good search engine will guide one to tutorials on how to do this.
That's pretty much my use case, although I currently put all DVDs and BRs directly at the player connected to the TV.

Any recommendation for a drive that works well for you?

I bought an internal Bluray burner for my old 17" Macbook Pro. When it died I took that out and got an external chassis for it. I think I've used it twice since then. I still buy and rent movies but it doesn't work with 4k movies anyway.

I don't remember the last time I even touched a CD/DVD/BluRay. I've long since digitized all my physical media and am digital only now.

How did you do this? I've been wanting to digitize my physical collection for a very long time now.

Recently, I've been taking advantage of a security hole in my bluray player to import all of my dsf music onto my mac.

In the next couple days, I will be burning 15-20 copies of a DVD containing converted 8mm film for older folks to have.

It will be the first time I've burned disks in probably a couple years, back when I was burning CDs for my old 2000-model year car with a bad cassette deck.
