For the same reason owners will refer to their iPod as an iTouch (or, is it the other way around?!).
It's the vernacular we're all used to.
Someone states, "iPhone2G" I know exactly what he is talking about.

Still love my 3gs. I'm a super geekgirrl and the 3gs does most of what I want it to. Yes, I'm craving the 4s but want to wait for the 5 which will have teleportation built into it.

I'm also still on the 4.0.1 firmware. Planning on upgrading to the new firmware when I want to spend the time.

I recently had to upgrade to a 4s since our corporate carrier switched to Verizon. I still have both an original iPhone as well as a 3GS. Original is by far the most sturdy model. Looks as good as the day I got it and I never even used a case with it. Button feedback is the best of all the models. I like the the in-hand feel of the 3GS most. It was wider than the other models and the curved sides just felt comfortable. I get a hand cramp holding the 4s for extended periods.

I lost my 4 around the end of July last year at a bar. (dead battery, never appeared on find my iPhone.) It was around the time at the height of the iPhone 5 rumors so I reverted to my original model 8gb while waiting for what eventually became the 4s to come out. It was unbearably slow for about a week, then I just got used to using it again. Sadly the battery life was ungodly low by that time, and the 4s didn't really impress me, so I bought a iPhone 4 32gb off a guy on Craigslist and am back on that now. I still love my original iPhone though. It sits permanently on a cradle in my bathroom and streams pandora for me while I get ready in the mornings.
