I still have a VCR, and I'll use it from time to time. I sits on the same shelf as the DVD player. I only use it when I want to see something that has not been released on dvd. This is pretty rare, but it happens from time to time.

Also, I am a huge fan of borrowing from the library, and the library has some classics on VHS. It's not COMPLETELY dead yet, though it is on it's way out.

If you think about it, VHS production only ended 10 years ago in 2005; it's going to be a while before they completely disappear.

Who still uses VCRs?

I do, and it's hooked up to my TV. I own a large number of old VHS tapes that I could never throw away. All of them are kids/family movies so like the Disney classics and movies like Matilda and Annie. I still love watching them.

FWIW, when I had DishNetwork at my apartment, their set-top boxes(or at least the basic ones) didn't have DVR functionality built in. They did, however, have a USB port on the back.

For $10 a month, you could plug your own external into the USB port and they would enable DVR functionality from your STB. I actually thought that was a decent idea, as you could put whatever size drive you wanted on. Of course, the drive formatting and the recordings are all proprietary, so you can't-for example-plug the drive into your computer and watch from there. Once you discontinue the service, the drive is useless without the STB, and all you can do is reformat it and use it for something else.

The Motorola DVRs that the cable companies around here use have about a dozen ports on them, including several USBs and one or two Firewire ports. The cable companies I've dealt with disable everything but the coaxial in port and the various video out ports(i.e. coax, RCA, S-Video, Composition, and HDMI).

Interesting. My Motorola HD cable box has Eathernet, USB, S-Video, HDMI, FireWire 400, Y/R/W RCA video out AND has the R/G/B video out as well as a couple other things no RF out though. I have the cable box hooked VIA A/V to the VCR and RF out that to the rest of the house. I suppose I could use a RF Modulator which i have atleast a half a dozen of but non of them handy ATM.

Personally I wish they still made tapes, they are cheaper to produce. A DVD gets scratched and rendered Useless, A VHS you can just repair with some scotch tape and watch it forever.

Same here, I have some good movies on VHS still, TAXI, Turner & Hooch, 28 Days, While you were Sleeping, Tommyboy thats just a small amount. I am constantly looking for VHS tapes at garage sales most of the time they are cheaper than the DVDs and most of the time I already own what they sell LOL.

Am I reading thread correctly? The very poster who took the mick out of me for using a BlackBerry, still uses VCR.

I hate hypocrites. And there's only one thing I hate more and its judgemental hypocrites.

I was just giving you **** about a BlackBerry (in a joking manner) because BB, the "Real" smartphone, has been left in the dust by these wannabe worthless things claiming to be "smart" phones today.

LOL are you serious?

OK, are you pulling our [collective] chain?

(Bonus Pro-tip: optical media, here and now, is _way_ less expensive vs. tape for consumer markets)

I see; so American TV has managed to cock-up yet another show. Typical.

The US version is pretty spectacular, and is executive produced by Michael Dobbs who wrote the original source material (used by both the UK and US versions). It's tonally different, it's darker, it takes the political commentary to completely different places.

I highly recommend watching _both_ series.

In that case I owe you apology. I wasn't aware you were joking.

I use mine to add more inputs to my TV, I have not great eye sight so when I sit down and watch TV I find older CRTs to be better for me to look at, so my TV is from like around 1987 and only has a coax input. I use my VCR to output to that and have my 360 and PS3 plugged into it. PS3 handles standard def a lot better than the 360 for some reason

Ahhh, is such a MatthewLTL thread. God rest his soul.

I can't say I have used a VCR in probably 10 years now. It has been a while. It's also been a while since I've been to a movie rental store Or even used a DVD for that matter.

I still have a few VCRs here and plenty of old tapes such as U2 live at Red Rocks and many others. Haven't played them since sometimes in the early 2000s.

I also have a DVD/BR player that I haven't used much since buying it a few years ago.

35/month seems a bit steep for a DVR service. I have DirecTV which is the most overpriced of probably all tv packages out there haha and my DVR box only costs me 15/month.

My mom uses a VCR still. She watches old nature shows and home videos like people have said. She also owns a DVD player as well. She is old though and isn't the most technology savvy person out there. She used to have to call me to ask how to turn on her computer haha. She just doesn't need to use a computer because she is a partner in her practice so she has had an assistant forever that does any email and stuff for her.

What is this VCR contraption?

I'm more familiar with beta max myself
Beta Max has had it. Get yourself a laser disk player. They're the future!
