I actually don't mind the little inconvenience having to check in using the app, and after paying uploading that photo proof of stub. Initially, I signed up to watch unlimited movies. Unfortunately, it isn't much "unlimited" anymore with the recent changes that you can't watch a movie more than once and they still advertise it as "unlimited" meaning as much new movies you haven't seen yet. Today, I heard they revived the unlimited plan with an update to the app. They also added a new plan at limited time offer discounted $2 less than the unlimited plan at $7.99/monthly 3 movies/month with 2 months trial to iHeartRadio.

Ever since I got the MoviePass, I actually watch more movies than I used to at least 1 each week. Logically speaking, the cost of one ticket can equate to the monthly cost of MoviePass so it is still worth it. I also signed up to AMC and Century membership for extra points when using the MoviePass and rack up as much points by getting the most expensive 2D tickets during evenings or weekend showings.

My Movie Pass card became active in Aug '17 and since then, I've seen 26 movies. The Movie Pass app shows all the films I've seen. I'm on the monthly $9.95 plan so I've paid somewhere around $80 and seen about $260 worth of movies. So I guess I could say I've saved about $180 although in truth, I probably wouldn't have gone to some of thes films if I had to pay $10 a ticket.

There are weeks in the year when there is no films worth seeing even with Movie Pass. Still if I pass over the "chaff", there usually is at least one film I would like to see and that makes it a break even deal.

Last December Movie Pass had a gift deal and I gave a couple of 6 month deals to relatives who rave about it. Haven't heard if they liked it enough to get a subscription in July after their 6 month deal expires.

One of things I like best about Movie Pass is if a film is a stinker, I can walk out without feeling I got screwed out of $10-$12.

I wonder if MoviePass will switch to tiered pricing like Sinemia:
$4.99 per month: one ticket per month
$6.99 per month: two tickets per month
$9.99 per month: two tickets per month including 3D, 4D and IMAX
$14.99 per month: three tickets per month including 3D, 4D and IMAX

It seems too good to be true, but it actually works. I saw a few movies this month and paid for them all with my MoviePass card. I paid for nothing except parking and popcorn and the $9.95 for my monthly subscription. That saved me a lot of money! And the more movies I see, the more money I've saved.

Apparently, they make their money through "kickback" deals with theaters, who give them a cut of the box-office take. MoviePass is currently feuding with AMC about this. An employee at another theater chain told me that they've seen an uptick in business based on MoviePass. Perhaps MoviePass is the disruptive agent that will change movie-going, as Uber did to taxi-riding.

The downsides of using MoviePass are tolerable, at least for me:

It takes many weeks to get your debit card after you sign up.

Not all theaters participate.

You can see only one movie (for free) per calendar day.

MoviePass works only for regular movies, not 3D or IMAX showings.

You can't buy tickets and reserve seats in advance. You have to be at the theater to buy your ticket. If no good seats are left, you have to pick a different movie or not see a movie at all. To avoid that, I go to the theater a little earlier than I otherwise would.

Exception: A few theaters (not in my area) support MoviePass advance e-ticket purchases, which you can do through the app.
If you go with a date or a group, you have to buy one ticket at a time because you have to pay with one debit card at a time. MoviePass says they might create a "couples" system, but so far they haven't. Sometimes the box office staff knows about MoviePass and lets us buy two tickets, pick two seats, and hand them two MoviePass debit cards, but otherwise each person in our group has to take a turn buying their own ticket.

Their terms and conditions are very picky. No sharing cards. No seeing a different movie than you indicated. No buying a ticket and skipping the movie (e.g., to build up theater-membership points). They presumably won't know if you are doing these things (are they tracking my GPS?), but they can revoke your card for such infractions. And if you cancel your subscription they say you can't re-subscribe for 9 months.
Upsides:

Lots of theaters are in the program.

If a theater is in the program, you can choose any of the movies they are showing (except 3D and IMAX).

The app shows you local participating theaters, their locations, what's playing, and the show times.

Once you find the movie you want to see using the app, it's one tap to buy your ticket (i.e., fund your debit card).

It's hard to beat the chance to go to a free first-run movie any day you like!

A couple of other downsides that you can't blame on MoviePass: If you see multiple movies in a given week, you might have to sit through the same trailers over and over. And you might get fat or poor from too much movie candy!
SIGNED up, sucks you can only see one movie per day.

Having MoviePass leads me to try movies that I'm not sure about. Sometimes I feel like I wasted 1.5 to 2 hours on a clunker, but sometimes it pays off. Example: I took a chance on "American Animals" and it turned out to be a fascinating story told in a great way. I'm glad I went to see it.

And there's the benefit of voting with your feet as the only thing you're out is the popcorn you bought. Your $10 monthly charge is still good for another movie for the rest of the month. I've WALKED maybe 5 times now.

Upcoming changes to MoviePass

In the coming weeks, we will roll out three different upgrades to our base $9.95 service for our members.

Bring-A-Guest: MoviePass members will be able to purchase extra tickets to a showing of a movie right through the MoviePass app, so that you can seamlessly reserve seats for you and your friends (at e-ticketing partner theaters) to watch a film even if they aren’t MoviePass subscribers. As a benefit, if your friend signs up for MoviePass within 24 hours, we’ll refund the entire cost of the ticket!

Peak Pricing: MoviePass is committed to maintaining our low monthly price as we continue to grow rapidly. Rather than raise our prices or limit viewings, our plan has been to develop a new variable pricing system based on the demand for particular showtimes. Under this plan, if the combination of demand for a title, date or part of day is higher, subscribers may be asked to pay a small additional fee depending on the level of demand. You can avoid this peak surcharge by choosing an alternative date or film. We will also soon give subscribers one “peak pass” per month, allowing them to waive a Peak Price surcharge once per month. Annual and Quarterly subscribers will not incur peak pricing until their current subscription term ends and then renews.

Premium Showings: MoviePass members on any plan will soon be able to access RealD 3D, IMAX 2D or 3D, and other Premium Large Format showings of any film for an additional upgrade fee.

These features are being tested currently and will slowly roll out to all our members over the next several weeks.

For the first time this evening, the MoviePass app told me that I had to send them a photo of my ticket stub to confirm that I bought a ticket for the correct movie. It was easy enough, but it's too bad they have to make trouble for us law-abiding users to stop the scofflaws.

going to check it out

Peak Pricing goes into effect when there’s high demand for a movie or showtime. You may be asked to pay a small additional fee depending on the level of demand. You can avoid the surcharge by selecting a different showtime or movie. Over the coming weeks we’ll also be introducing Peak Pass, which will allow you to waive one peak fee per month.
well that sucks

Yeah if you’re into 3D/imax it’s a good product. I am not, so I still prefer moviepass. I guess I will have to pay attention at the peak pricing thing and evaluate.

MoviePass will roll out Premium Showings that will allow members on any plan will soon be able to access RealD 3D, IMAX 2D or 3D, and other Premium Large Format showings of any film for an additional upgrade fee.

So probably stick with MoviePass.

Do we know the pricing?

If it’s 3 or 4 bucks I might do it, although I am not really that interested. Guess wife will choose :)
you are married? I had such high hopes for us riding into the sunset together

might drop movie pass in favor of AMC's A list. yeah it's 20 instead of 10 but since the new "PEAK" pricing comes into play for new movies that 10 adds up quick

Yeah I will wait and observe for a bit then make a choice. I never go see a movie when it’s opening week or when it’s extra crowded so it might not affect me
