I wouldn't complain if this was an added feature somewhere down the road. It was quite nice having this feature back when I had my Blackberry Torch. Being able to tell what the notifications were based on that without looking at the phone was quite nice. However, I do have an  Watch, so with that being said, I guess there wouldn't be much point for me specifically with an LED notification light.

I always thought Apple would come up with a better idea, like a nice glowing home button. Or like Moto's amazing active display (which would only work on an OLED screen I guess, so no good for iPhone).

The way the iPhone is essentially dead when the screen is off is a big shame in my opinion.

I bet the LED notification is patented and Apple is refusing to pay royalty and that's why we'll never see it. Some how it seems one of the biggest deciding factor is if that feature is patented or not.

Do you all think Apple will offer the led notification light on the iPhone 8.
No, because Apple hates LEDs on things (I myself love them); there isn't even an on-LED on iMacs and Apple displays.

Also, Apple already sells an notification light separately; it's called Apple Watch... :D

Do you all think Apple will offer the led notification light on the iPhone 8. That's one thing I miss from the galaxy's. But I definitely like the iphone overall.
If they haven't added one by now, I highly doubt we'll see them do it for the next phone. I think the time has passed for notification lights, as that was a thing for many phones a few years ago. Now less and less phones seem to have those lights.

I was an android user for years and yes I do miss the LED notification light . I think having one on the iPhone takes away from the "elegance " of the phone and kinda "cheapens" it to a point.

If it is easy to do why not? I had a droid for a few months and thought the notification light was good. Although 9 times out of 10 it was some notification that didn't matter. So instead of picking up my phone for no reason to check it I was picking up my phone to see why the light was on. Damned if you do and damned if you don't sort of thing.

I felt Android notifications sort of pestered me to death. Why not have the option and a setting for those that prefer either way of doing things? All I can say in regards to why I feel it won't happen is the light seemed to be very "un-apple" for lack of a better way to explain it.

As others have said they also want to push their watches. In the eyes of Apple you should have every Apple solution to every Apple product they sell. I just can't bring myself to buy an Apple watch. The Airpods have been the latest temptation to buy one but the function isn't compelling enough to justify it.

Yeah I guess that was what I was trying to express.

I have to assume you mean modern iMacs and Apple displays. I say that because I have one acrylic Cinema Display and two acrylic Studio Displays right in front of me and all three have power lights. In fact, it's set up so that if I push that light the PowerMac G5 they are connected to will go to sleep.

I have an iMac G5 as well and it's got one big power light that glows on the bottom right when the Mac is on.

:D :D

I hated the light when on android. It was annoying and constant, without a setting to turn it off.

If Apple made it, I'm sure they'd have a toggle switch for users like me.

I was rooted on Android and customized the light. Could have on or off and color coded for different callers. Thought it would be an issue moving to iPhone. But, don't miss it. And, until this thread, never thought much about it. I like notifications on iOS.

Many Android phones don't have notification LED either.
Notification LED is a classic solution during the feature phone era for notification, in the era where notifications are either calls or SMS, only.
Today, notification can mean a lot of things, from emails to apps, etc. Even if you allow color differentiations, it's not intuitive anymore for the lay person. The ideal solution would be an always-on part of the screen that indicates notification (will be possible when Apple transition to OLED). Many Android phones headed this route, and Imo it's the better solution for the modern smartphone than a blinking LED.

Of course, there's the wearable solution as well. I don't miss notifications anymore ever since I use my Moto 360 with my Android phone. I get notifications even when I put my phone in my pocket/bag. Much better than a blinking LED that you will only notice when you look at the phone.

I doubt very much that Apple will ever add a standard notification LED, it's been 10 years and they've shown no interest.

You're best option if you really want it is to go into settings > general > accessibility and switch on the LED flash for alerts option.

Of course this means you're only going to see it at its best if the phone is face down.

Maybe when they switch to OLED they'll eventually add a persistent notification display option. But I think that would be about it.

Since Apple is planning on using AMOLED. Just do screen always on feature is enough and that is greatly replacing LED notification light.

Completely agree. LED notifications are never going to happen. But always on display could very well be a potential possibility if all OLED is implemented in the future.

Why/how would it? It can easily be a small notification LED that's basically not visible at all (like various proximity/light sensors around the earpiece) that, if/when enabled, and there are pending notifications of particular type, would just blink a different color (based on settings).

Yeah, aside from mainly only seeing it when looking at your phone's back, it's also not quite the same kind of of a notification light--it flashes rather than doing something more discretely, doesn't really differentiate between different notifications, and probably most importantly it only does it when a notification comes in, rather than being there after the fact (which is one of the main use cases of a typical notification LED feature).

I don't disagree with you. It could be done elegantly as is Apple's usual method of doing things (most of the time anyway).

I think however, some things Apple has planned, but they wait on until the technology is there so they can implement it in the way they really want it to be. It's not necessarily that they 'hate' notification LED's (although they might).

I'm really expecting AMOLED screens to resolve this issue with everyone scratching their heads thinking "Why didn't I think of that?"

But we'll see. Hope I am right.
