Being in the UK I only use MSN (and Skype!), so for me everything else in Adium isn't important. Microsoft Messenger does MSN better than Adium anyway so i'll stay with that until (if ever) anything better comes along.

IMO libpurple sucks for anything other than AIM (and maybe Jabber) and building Adium on it might make for easier coding, but it's the one thing that is seriously slowing development on an otherwise good looking app.

also in the uk and using amsn so i can use the isight.

Definitely not me. I've even got gAIM/Pidgin running on Windows and Ubuntu Linux and it just doesn't work very well, though it works about the same as Adium.

The Yahoo! Messenger beta, while old but early connects while Adium/Pidgin/gAIM doesn't and the same with Mercury Messenger, which is getting close to supporting Windows Live Messenger functionality.

Adium only supports viewing other people's custom emoticons, not sending them.

Adium doesn't support Personal Messages.

I can't get my text colour to change

I know this is INCREDIBLY minor stuff, but it's the closest i'm going to get to Windows Live Messenger without having an awful interface (aMSN) or using Java (Mercury) :(

Microsoft Messenger for Mac

I use Microsoft Messenger for Mac (v 6.02) for IM, and use Skype for audio/video.

Is this the same as MSN?

I have been tempted to try Adium - but since I only chat with MS Messenger users, and am a Mac NOOB, the current setup seems OK. I wish I could do Application Sharing (I have to run Fusion to do this) with other Messenger users. I am the only Mac user I IM with so no need for iChat...

Every year or so I give Adium another shot at replacing iChat and it's never lasted more than a day for me. I really love how I can configure a compact contact list in Adium, iChat's is so much less space efficient, but for actually using an IM client Adium sends me fleeing into the hills.

It's just too flaky for me, and I have to give up A/V chatting (which I use with some regularity). I'm simply too spoiled by iChat's terrific integration with Finder and the rest of OS X.

Running Adium always sort of reminds me of when I ran a Linux desktop. Twenty gazillion configuration options I'll never use, the fanciest skinning and theming capabilities imagined by mankind, and file transfers that don't work. Seems like a bundle of misplaced priorities to me. I'll take iChat's limited flexibility that works all the time.

Adium supports MSN (No A/V though). I only use Adium, because it is so clean!

My friend recommended Adium to me back when I first got a Mac. I probably wouldn't use anything else...besides iChat of course.

I use adium.

I'd use iChat if there were a way to get rid of those annoying speech bubbles in the chat window.

I use Adium.
I´ve been using it since I got my first mac, I just love the fact that i can customize it to look just the way I want.
I use mercury from time to time, but only when I videochat with some of my windows-friends who doesn`t want to use Skype :p
Go Adium! :D

Me too

I tried Adium- I like it, but I found myself going back to iChat. All I use are AIM and Google Talk, and both work great on iChat. I like the customization of Adium, but I found myself going back to and liking the look of iChat more.

I'm with this guy. iChat is a good. I don't personally know many mac users so, I don't video chat..

But, I will say that Adium is pretty cool. I can talk to my wife on yahoo and my buddy on GTalk, in the same window...

I mostly still use iChat, though, I actually like the bubble windows.

yes but what about
slow transfer speed to windows live messenger (for windows) users?

what about tab chats? (cleaner interface) I hate pressing F10 to switch chats...

stable connection. I leave my mac on for one night, 3/4 times MSN signs me off after 1 night sleep.

I would love to use Ichat, but Adium is SO much better, all my contacts use MSN, so Ichat doesnt work for me, I tried the Jabber thing, but ichat use to much space, doesnt have tabs, and video with MSN users doesnt work over jabber.
So Adium is my choice, I recommend it.

That makes me wonder how many people who want tabs in iChat will switch back when Leopard provides them. The latest Yahoo! Messenger beta has them and it's much more convenient.
