Rotation lock on my iPad and silent switch on my iPhone. For example, when I'm watching a movie, moving the iPad even an inch can cause the display to turn completely, so it's easier to just flip the switch on the side instead of opening up the multitasking bar menu and finding it. Besides, how often does anyone mute their iPad?

There is no hardware rotation lock switch on iPhone so I guess everyone uses the mute switch on iPhone for silent. Let's start a poll.

Mute

The advantage of the switch is that you can use it whilst your ipad is off, and in its case.

You're in a meeting - you need to turn your email sounds off - you can mute, without opening, and unlocking.

There are no times that I can anticipate needing to lock the orientation whilst the machine is in sleep.

Hate calling it a mute switch... it's notification mute. Which is why I use it for that - as far as I'm aware, using the physical switch to mute notifications is the only means of doing so. Rotation lock at least has a software equivalent function.

On top of that, when I first got my ipad, I found myself locking rotation a lot more - now that I've been using it for as long as I have, there are still times I want to lock the rotation, but maybe once a day? So with gestures enabled, it's a swipe, a swipe, and a tap... not bad for something I do once or twice a day.

Notification muting though, I use all the time. Whether I'm in a meeting, watching a movie, listening to music, or just don't want to hear the click of the keys while I'm typing... but don't want the system volume muted, it's handy. That, and even more so for being in a meeting... I don't have to unlock the iPad to mute the notifications, which I'd have to do if I was just using the volume rocker to mute everything.

Glad the option is there though, but as long as there's no software equivalent for notification muting, that's what it'll be for me. Especially now with gestures enabled, paired with how little I find the need to lock the rotation.

This is only on jail broken devices, right?

Nope... but you do need access to a mac with xcode installed. If you have that (and it doesn't have to be the mac you use to sync with), you get a new option in the system settings to enable the gestures.

Very handy, though not quite ready for prime time.

Double tap the home button and go to the iPod controls. The mute key there will also function the same way as the physical switch. But, that mute key only appears when the physical switch is in "orientation lock" mode; when you use the physical switch to mute, that key changes to an orientation lock key.
