Who went with 512GB?

Not sure if this a 512GB owners only thread 😛 but I'm the proud owner of a 64GB iPad. Kind of funny, we have folk here at the top end of the product line and I'm at the bottom.

With that said, I'm finding the 64GB to be more then enough storage. I'm only using a fraction and when I want movies on it, I'll load one on, no need to store all of my movies on the tablet. I also don't use it for photography, kind of bulky but it is a better camera then my iPhone SE, so who knows, maybe I'll be trekking around Disneyworld with it 😛

The less said about default music and video apps on iPhone the better.

So 512 GB doesn't work for you, but you're going to judge others for buying it? Try not to let feelings of inadequacy and jealousy control your life. Buy the brand of mobile device and storage size that best fits your needs and stop being so aggressive to others that might have different needs than you.

I'm really stupid, and I knew it before I even ordered it! Oh, not the 512gb but 256 on my new 12.9" wifi ipp. After setting up and loading everything I had on my 9.7 ipp and everything I wanted with new App purchases, I have 8.5gb loaded 🙂 after 2 weeks of ownership. But that's ok with me, I can! It gives me peace of mind everytime I see something new I want to load. Enough to pay $100 for something I may never need...but but I may! 🙂

256 here. I have the habit of swapping movies and such from my iDevices.

For that $200, I picked up the ASK and put money toward a pencil, but I understand why folks and Apple bumped up the storage. Going forward, I will probably lean toward the lowest storage iPhone and a higher storage iPad for commuting etc.

I understand that folks want the top tier storage for their needs / usage. If that makes me stupid, alrighty then.
 
generally speaking, when it comes to storage buy as much as you can afford. also ssd with larger capacities have longer lifespans

It’s wild isn’t? In just a few years, we’ll be discussing whether or not we should get 1 TB or 2 TB in our iPads!

Just over 10 years ago, I bought a 20” iMac that had a 512 GB Hard Drive. That was considered to be a huge amount of storage. Now my iPad (if it ever gets here) will have the same amount of room.

Lol, I've always known I wanted a 500GB-1TB iPad from the beginning. Apple just took a while deliver that. 😛

10 years ago, I built a 12TB file server. That's all filled up now (mostly Blu-ray rips). 😛

I'm always stupid, and buy the maximum capacity devices, that's why I had a 256GB 9.7 pro. The irony is that I'm SO stupid, I have a great job and get a great salary that allows me to blow my money on all these top-spec devices

I like to think I’m going to use this baby for 3-4 years, so I maxed it out, 512, cell, keyboard, pencil, the works. But those 200 bucks, to double the space... it’s such a lot. I gave me a serious headache to decide what was wisdom. I choose the pay once, cry once credo.

There is a thing called WiFi! You could use that to get much, much better speeds and you can use it to sync your iPad with a laptop/desktop.

Heh, that's one of the issues with iPads. If I have to choose between accessories and more local storage, I always choose storage. I can always buy accessories anytime. No choice but to replace the iPad if I want more storage.

Opting for just 16GB storage on my iPad Air was a mistake thinking I'd just wait for the 256GB model next year. Got stuck with that for almost 3 years until the Pro 9.7 256GB was released and boy was that an exercise in frustration even if I had a 128GB iPad 4 (iOS 6) doing manga duties. The 16GB model just wasn't enough even for apps. Even games like Angry Birds occupy a huge chunk of space.

Have you compared sync speeds between USB 2 and Wifi ac 866 Mbps? I have and Wifi sucks in that dept as well.
You will never get above 40 MBps wifi sync speed to transfer your data from PC to your iPad. Wifi limitations.
Not everyone has unmetered 100 Mbps bandwidth.

Filling up my 128 GB iPad pro 12.9" gen 1 was such a pain. There have been so many instances where I couldn't transfer stuff and had to cancel midway because of the pathetic USB and Wifi sync speeds.

Power to those who are adamant to not see my point. As the storage size grows, transfer protocols like USB 3 do matter. My point was made and I am simply getting a 256 GB model. I'm out!

We get your point. It doesn't work for you with your specific set of circumstances and requirements. That's fine.

What you're choosing to ignore is just because it doesn't work for you, it doesn't mean others can't work with those limitations. For some, USB3 would be nice to have but unnecessary for their specific usage.

Using the USB3 camera kit with this iPad Pro gives a transfer speed equal to when I plug the camera SD card in my MBP 15", and since I use it as a portable photography dispose / review machine, I need to get as much storage as I can. 512 is expensive but kind of worth it if you need it.

I'm going to have to pick one up - do you know if it lets you transfer into the Files app in iOS 11 - or are you limited to the Photos app?

I can work around it, but it would be great if I could control where they ended up.
 
I went with more storage (512) and it's mainly just because I really liked using my 12.9" iPad pro to review pictures while I was traveling but it started filling up pretty quick so I'd rather just not have to worry about it. Maybe it was overkill but I did regret not having enough storage last time so I'm not too worried. Really depends on your usage though.

I went with 512GB for both my 10.5 iPP and my new 12.9 iPP. I elected to return the 10.5, as I prefer the larger screen real-estate of the 12.9 vs the 10.5.

My decision to go 512GB was two-fold. One, I'm intending this new iPP to be my main work (travel) machine (I use a docked MBA at home on a 34" ultrawide display otherwise). Two, my previous 12.9 iPP was full with video and pictures at 256GB; with the new 512GB I still have 200GB free, and no concerns about what media I may be leaving behind.

The 512 GB was really the bump that finally moved the iPad Pro from being just a tablet to me, into being a full laptop replacement option. Again, I'm only using it as my laptop replacement when I'm on the road; I'm still using my laptop...but it has effectively become my Macbook Air "desktop".

Lol dude, who even syncs anymore? I can fill up a 256 GB iPhone no problem and I haven’t transferred a file via cable since the 5S. Not everyone has the same workflow as you, and to assume that cable transfer speeds define the usefulness of storage space for everyone would be even more incredibly stupid. Apple knows no one is really doing this on a large scale anymore.

I normally go top of the range for everything, this time i thought screw it - i only fill the iPad with films and the 128 is enough for that so 256 would be more than fine.

No right or wrong answer - only what works for you.

I maxed it out because I switched to from my MacBook to a Cobalt Blue Surface laptop. I had some Windows only programs that I needed to use at work so I bought the cellular, 512gb model so I can store all of my photos and iTunes movies with room to download Netflix and Amazon movies. Everything else I have is Apple except for my new laptop which is actually pretty nice. Sorry for the long story to a short question, but I maxed out the new 10.5 so I can keep my media with me.
 
Mine is 512. No regrets. I can have my entire music collection on it and lots of room for movies and anything else I want. Also, I'm a photographer (not by trade) and the extra space will come in handy for those RAW files!

The more storage, the better IMO. And when they offer the 1 TB option, I'll be at the party.
