As I've said on another thread, I learned the hard way not to wait for end-of-line announcements. I was poised to "quickly buy" a Series 2 SS Apple Watch the day before the Series 3 announcement. It was in my Apple.ca shopping cart. Announcement day came, I saw no reason to buy Series 3, went to buy my 2 and, it was gone. They quickly disappeared from most other sites as well.

So, two days ago and mostly prompted by the posts here on macrumors, I stopped waiting and ordered my 512K Air. I hope to use it and enjoy for many, many years. Just as I'm still using, daily, my 2012 Air. I'm not "against" the new MBP. I just know that the Air suits me and what I use it for and I'm happy with that. Regretting not buying the latest and perhaps last Air isn't something I wanted to do. No regrets. Looking forward to my new, but oh-so-familiar and welcome, laptop!

Very interesting info.
They basically cancelled your order.....or emptied your basket.
Food for thought...

Enjoy your new MBA!

Oh, man, at the current BB sale price of $749, I'm sorely tempted.
(Well, strike that ... I see it's now $899 ... the $749 must have been President's Day only, or something.)

I was about to buy it last night but think too long, this morning when I got up and check it sadly it went up to $899 :(. Since I work pretty close to Best Buy so decided to walk in there during lunch time and ask if they have open box. And they do!! and it was barely used too! The price was $576.99(128GB model of course). combine with RetailMeNot cash back offer which give a $20 cash back. That's a pretty sweet deal! you should go walk around and ask about open box if you are looking for one. Happy hunting!

You lucked out with that open box, all of my stores open box are barely marked down ever unless it’s just in poor condition.

True that. Was at the local BB the other day, and while they had no open-box Macs, they had several Windows-based open-box machines on a table. They were all marked down $18.
$18?
That's going to push someone to an impulse purchase or to switch from a new-in-box item? Really?

Only $18 that's crazy! Here's my receipt. with a total discount of $423. Without that kind of discount, I wouldn't pull the trigger...

Well, $18 off is because the box was merely opened. A $323 open box discount is because the box was opened, and the unit was thrown around the room a few times before it was returned. :p:D

Thought about it many times but can't bring myself to spend that kind of money when a nicer display panel exists. As much as I hate the 1-port, usb-c, I gotta go with the better display.

What will bring the Air-successor?
Are we in a trap to buy the current model, because we don't know they abuse the Air-concept to same minimalism as they did with MB and MBP and they proceed in the robbery of interfaces or this super MagSafe ?!
;)

I've got a 2015 air, with only 530 charge cycles....so I'll be good for a while, but I'll be really tempted to upgrade if the new Air has a retina-esqe screen. ;)
Thx for referencing battery cycle, never really put interest into looking at mine until I read this thread. I am at 192 with a MBA 2013 version. 193/1000 I have plenty of cycles left but I would so jump on it even though I love my current air.

"Apple has postponed production of its rumored 2018 MacBook Air model to the second half of the year, according to supply chain sources (via DigiTimes).

A new version of Apple's most affordable MacBook was expected to go into mass production in the second quarter, but the company has reportedly already informed supply chain partners of the deferment, without revealing its reasoning behind the decision. "

Interesting news. Sadly, my hopes are low. It seems Apple is increasingly leaving the computer business.

Why would you have to buy another one? Jump in value? Collector's item? o_O
Most want to buy another one quickly when it is announced it is discontinued in the hope of "resetting the clock" of ownership with a brand new unit that will last the usual length of time.

If the useful lifespan of a Macbook Air is 10 years (totally made up number for the sake of discussion) and someone has owned it for 6 years, then there is only about 4 years left. But if Apple were to announce next month that Macbook Airs as we know them are discontinued, then by buying a new one now, gives them a full 10 years starting at the point of purchase.

That's the idea in a nutshell.

Are there a few who will try to snap up some to flip for a profit? Sure. Are there one or two people out there that think that something as ubiquitous as the Macbook Air will be a collectible? I wouldn't be surprised. But I suspect that these make up an insignificant percentage of those who want to buy an MBA before they are gone.

Count me amongst one of those. Still using my 2012 MBA 256, very happily. No problems at all but, will start in on my recently purchased brand new 512 i7 soon and use the 2012 for my travel machine. Here's to the next 10 years of chicklet keyboards, sturdiness, reliability and magsafe!

New MBA on sale: $700. New iPad 2018 on sale: $300. That's a pretty good combo for a grand. If you take good care of these devices, the MBA will last you 6 years, and the iPad will go at least 3 years.

Edit: I bet 95% of the computing population would not be limited by these entry level devices over the time period described above.

A small charity I advise has just been awarded some funding to upgrade their computers. They're looking at buying 3 new MBAs for the last three staff members who are still using 2005 era white macbooks. (all other staff are on MBA / MBP). I told them go ahead.

- They've considered Chromebooks but don't want the overhead of dealing with a new tech environment / integrating with other staff's mac workflows.
- I can't in all honestly tell them to wait for a new model MBA that might not come out till this autumn. They have projects that needs to be worked on right now.
- If a new model MBA comes out early, it might have the crappy MBP keyboard, or other issues or if it is redesigned, then it will be the first in the line and may have teething issues. Or it might be at a higher price and blow their budget. Best for them to buy something they know well and are comfortable with right now and get on with their job.
