I am sort of up for getting one as a remote for the tv, so that there is one available for guests to use, as well as the people who live here who all have iPhones.

ipad 2 equivalent

i see this new iPod Touch as an equivalent to selling ther iPad 2 & 4 simultaniously, Sacrfice some features for price.

Ipad 2 = low res screen/slower processor/worse camera = 100 cheaper

iPod touch 5g 16gb = less storage/no rear cam/no colors = 60 cheaper

It really doesn't make sense. The iPod Touch could have given non-iPhone users an iPhone experience. Instead, they stripped many of the important features away from it.

If anything, I think they should upgrade the camera. Make the camera better than the iPhones if they have to. Give it a little bulk and put in optical zoom. It can work as a point and shoot/gaming device without being seen as the inferior to the iPhone. It can attack Samsung's Smart Cameras. Now it's just a stripped down iPod Touch. This is worse than a stripped down iPhone. I don't know what is the purpose of this device.

People with smartphones probably won't buy it. People with iPhones definitely won't buy it. People with dumb phones could get it, but they can get Smartphones for about the same price, except have more features (albeit probably a weaker screen). I think that's a sacrifice most people will make though.

Optical zoom? Is this a joke.

It's Economics

The iPhones have a much higher margin for Apple. Apple markets the Touch so that people who are choosing between an iPhone and Touch, get an iPhone. The Touch is for people who will not get an iPhone but many people who own another type of smartphone do buy the iPod Touch.

It needs it to be a dedicated camera.

That's not very compelling. I know a few people who have an Android phone with an iPod Touch. After getting their smartphone, they barely touch the touch.

I wont, I am waiting for september to see if the announce GEN 6 and keep the 16 gig as a base model (highly unlikely IMO) or a higher capacity GEN 5, 128 gigs anyone?

Whatever they announce I am buying. Im such a marketing victim :s , but then again I love apple stuff

Rear camera

I didn't care about or use the rear camera either until a tow service "dropped" my car. Those pics are the only reason my insurance company reopened a claim they declined originally. Tow guy has impound lot and a relationship with ins adjusters.

dont you kinda have the rear camera on your phone already???

When Apple puts a 3G chip in that space where the camera used to be and sells it for $299 instead of $650 plenty of people will get that iPhone experience. Or do you really think, like most of the analysts seem to, that putting a plastic case on an iPhone will somehow save $450?

I would NEVER buy an iPod touch without the camera, the camera is one of the main reasons to buy it and without the camera there are many apps that would be incompatible with this device. I would rather buy a laggy 4th gen touch with a camera than this. Again I use the camera on this almost every day, and yes I would pay an extra 70-$100to have the camera included because the device would simply be useless without a camera for me. If half the apps I use would become incompatible without the camera then what is even the point of this device.

Again the camera isn't just for picture taking, for many apps, namely the ones that I use most, they will not work without the camera, making this device useless for me without the camera.

If I needed to play music I would buy a Sansa clip or something that would work well and I wouldn't even need the iPod, but this is an all in one device and I pay a premium to get it, so i expect the features to be there, however it's much better than paying for an iPhone contract, which there would be no way I would ever be able to afford an iPhone contract.

I would rather pay more money for something that works well then pay $70-100 less for something that is purposely gimped or only works half way with tons of features locked out, which is what this 16GB touch is doing. Again if this was my only choice and I needed to play music I would be finding a cheaper option.

This is also deceiving consumers since the 5th gen and 4th gen touch have cameras , I am sure apple is not putting on the packaging that this product is missing the camera, and stores only show the front of the iPod, you can't see the back through the case so you don't know it's missing when you buy it. I expect a lot of returns and angry consumers.

Hahah, i think same - removing camera from 'media' ( i repeat... MEDIA ) device is paradox.

Well, i bought iTouch 5th Gen ( with camera one ) 3-4 months ago. It's cool.

I remember a certain ambient light sensor that was not in the iPod Touch 5 :D. Everything in the design cost money and Apple breaks down the cost to see what they can get rid of in order to meet their desired product cost.

The lack of an ambient light sensor is quite annoying once you're used to it.

There are a lot of other cases where Apple hardware lost features during upgrades. Excluding the "removal of legacy features" such as optical drives, here's a few off the top of my head:

  • The iPod nano lost a buttload of features between the 5th and 6th generation models, including the ability to play video, a (horrible sounding) internal speaker, and a camera (that only took video).
  • The polycarbonate MacBook lost the infrared remote sensor when it went unibody.
  • The MacBook Air lost the backlit keyboard and ambient light sensor in 2010, only to get them back in 2011.
  • The G5 iMacs were 64 bit machines. The CoreDuo machines launched in 2006, while faster, were 32 bit machines. A few months later, they were replaced by the 64-bit Core2Duo models.

I buy between 5 and 10 iPod touches for work every year... The apps we run don't care about the camera or the storage space, so the new ones are perfect for me. They could save us as much $700 per year.

iTouch gen 5 32Gb is very cool but 16Gb is disaster  How can an iTouch new generation play without camera ? Let buy 32Gb ver or iTouch 4, don't be too foolish saving.

When it was first announced I thought that the small storage space would have put me off more than the lack of a rear camera. I have a camera on my phone which is probably better than the one on my touch, but thinking about it now I do use the camera quite a bit. The lack of storage space is still the main reason why I wouldn't buy it but the lack of camera is also a no no for me.

I didn't care about the light sensor and if there had been one, one of the first things I would have done is to turn off the automatic brightness which I have done on all my other devices. I prefer to set my own brightness levels and adjust it manually as I see fit. I would have preferred a mute button.

The camera on the 4th gen is rubbish IMO and not worth having especially if you have a camera on your smart phone. I have an 8 MP camera on my smart phone and a point and shoot camera which also has about 8 MP but I don't use it. I understand that for some people who don't have cameras on their phones/ people who are buying it for kids the camera on the 4th gen would be important. Personally I'd rather have all the other upgrades on the 5th gen are worth more to me than the camera on the 4th gen. 4th gen would be a step back for me.

I was buying another iPod 5g 64GB at BB this past weekend. The salesperson told me that a lot of angry customers are returning the 16GB version, complaining that they weren't aware it lacked a camera. It seems odd for Apple to downgrade their iconic product, at least while using the same name. I know other manufacturers downgrade all sorts of popular products, in an attempt to appeal to the budget-minded consumer. The Touch 16 GB is too close to the price of a 32GB Touch IMO, especially when BB discounts the 32 and 64 GB versions $25 every other week.
