How hard would it be to upgrade to the GM when it becomes available? I know you do not need UDID registration so anyone can install it, assuming I have a friend to get the file from. Would the transition from GM to Public be smooth or would it be a pain? I just want to make sure I would not lose any data or risk anything going on with the phone

GM usually is the same as public, so you'd not have to go from one to the other.

Thank you for the response. But would I be able too? I would like to check out the new features but do not want to be stuck on the developer updates only forever without losing my data. Can you confirm that I could get back to the general releases with minimal effort? Like maybe from 5.0.1 on?

I'm staying on jailbroken 4.1 fw / 1.59.00 bb

In case they do release something interesting, I may run a clean 4.1 install, maintaining the bb so I can sell it with the ability to be unlocked.

I have my phone heavily modified to fit my needs, and really don't feel like updating, running through all of it again, and running into things that may not be compatible.

Not to say I'm above anyone else - but 4.1 has done me justice and rather stay safe than sorry. Even then, this iPhone 4 is doing my great justice (since for me it was an upgrade from a 2G), so even though anything afterwards will be better, the 4 is still solid for times to come.

I'll have to say the same, I'm still on a Jailbroke 4.0.1 and its very stable and its setup perfectly for me just the way it is, for this reason I never needed to up date the OS. I'll wait for an untethered JB before I give up what I have. 3Gunrestrictor is an absolute must have.

staying at 4.2.8. cant quick reply from text notifications in ios5 so bitesms is a must.

I'll probably wait a day for the same day mess up cause everyone is trying to get it at once to get over and then download it :) (as it seems it is very common for when a new OS to come out to have downloading issues that sometimes can **** up your phone, happened to my roommate, so I'll wait til the craziness dies down some).

But soon as it seems safe, I'll upgrade.

you're missing what i am saying, GM and the public release are the same version, there'd be no need as you would be just replacing the OS with the same version. That's why anyone can use it without the need to have a UDID to be registered (not that i'm encouraging piracy of course...). you can put the GM on then when the next version came out, be it 5.0.1, it would upgrade normally.

Do you think iOS 5 will be available right after the event?

GM after the event. Public release the week of the new device going on sale.
