Another S5 user here, I replaced mine 1.5y ago after it got accidentaly broken (still had AC+), so it still looks good, but the battery life is definitely worse than my wife's S8 (sometimes it barely lasts a day, resetting and repairing will improve this but I am tired of doing it every month or so). But apart from that I am in the same boat as others, newer AW features were all pretty underwhelming, not worth the upgrade... Tried AW Ultra but it is sooo big on my wrist, I did not find it comfortable/good looking.
I hope that S9 has either some cool new features, or they somehow make Ultra2 a bit thinner, then I would buy a new one straight away :)

just bought a stainless steel 7 DOA sent off to be fixed hopefully it comes back 100%. it would not turn on or charge and got very warm/hot when on the charger.

I am not planning to upgrade from series 6, unless it stops working. I hope Apple keeps adding features to Ultra, my next upgrade will probably AW Ultra 3 or 4.

Apple Watch Ultra 2.

Looks like Apple will finally put a new chip in it. The Series 7, Series 8 and Ultra 1 all use the same chip as my old Series 6, so no way in hell I was going to "upgrade".

The Series 6 is still the latest gen model, since the Series 8 and Ultra 1 use the same chip.

I can use my Series 6 for many years too, but I just want more battery life which is the biggest weakness of the Apple Watch.

And the Apple Watch Ultra is still very bad in comparison to other smart watches when it comes to battery life.

If I would upgrade from my SS S7 it would be for another SS AW and not the ultra , I was never able to like the design and finish of the ultra , only reason to upgrade though would be if they are able to greatly improve the battery life

This. Although I would need to see how big the AWU (2) looks on my wrist, as I’m currently used to a 40mm AW…

I don’t care about what chip Apple puts in AW. I am hoping they keep adding more sensors.Other smart watches don’t have what I use my AW for everyday. Battery on my AW 6 isn’t bad either. I pop it on the charger before shower. If needed charge it for 10-15 mins during a drive.
I have used Garmin and polar for over 20 years. But they are not even close to AW for my needs.

I’m thinking I’ll upgrade this year. My GPS S4 is down to 73% battery, and although it works fine I’d like better battery life. As much as I’d like the extended battery life of the Ultra, especially since I do SAR dog training and spend a fair bit of time in the mountains, I think it’d be a bit much both on my wrist and in my budget.

Might go for a S9, or S8 at a reduced price, in which case I was thinking I’d stick with GPS again. But then, if Apple are actually completely done with the mini phones I probably won‘t want to haul the eventual replacement for my 12 mini with me on runs and such, so cellular might be worthwhile this time 🤔

I've got an S7 Hermes. Unfortunately the battery is not holding up as well on this one as on past watches, so I may take the opportunity to upgrade. The battery doesn't make it through the day if I use any watch face that doesn't have a completely black background.

I could send my watch in for a battery replacement (I've got AppleCare+ on it), but I may upgrade nonetheless depending on what improvements (if any) the Series 9 brings with it. And still torn between that and an Ultra version 2. The Ultra would be a bit big on me, but seems like the fashion trend these days would allow for that.

But I likely won't replace it with another Hermes version, but just the 'normal' stainless version instead. If I do get the Ultra, I'll almost certainly keep the S7 Hermes for times where I just don't want to wear the Ultra.

I purchased an Ultra (coming from an S5) but returned it.
Too bulky a monster for my likes, battery didn't last as long as expected, an most importantly, not really convenient to handle:

it's difficult to press the extra button without also pressing the dock button, and vice versa!
When pressing the digital crown, you have to take care of putting your thumb (countering the index finger that presses the crown) carefully on the left upper corner of the watch, to not press the extra button too.

For me that was unacceptable. A watch has to be a convenient to operate device, that you should be able to use without constantly having to think where and how to put your fingers.
Yes I understand that will go into muscle memory over time, but I found my self thinking why should I re-learn something that was so convenient? It annoyed me.

So I bought me a S8 instead and couldn't be happier. The only thing I miss is the big & bright display of the Ultra.

My Apple watch is something like 2 maybe 3 (or more) old. I don't see what could motivate me to upgrade. Its a watch with notifications, not much else

Download the Geocaching app from the app store, create an account, and start hunting! I've found caches in 10 different counties, a handful of US states, etc. They are almost everywhere.

I just did as advised, and there are caches everywhere!

Have you ever been stopped for "acting suspicious" when looking for a cache?

I have most definitely talked to cops on very quiet rural roads and shop owners/locals/etc when trying to be stealthy in urban centers. A quick explanation fixes things, but I'd prefer to not get noticed.

Same here
there are some good deals right now on more recent models but my S3 is doing what I need from it very well

The Ultra does absolutely nothing for me nor would I want it, My everyday watch is S5 and my dressy weekend watch is S7 Gold Stainless. There is really nothing new being added to these and both of mine look brand new. Until Apple can come out with a thinner watch with some more drastic changes I see no reason to upgrade.
I have previously had 2 others s1 I traded in for a Stainless silver S3, I gave that one to a friend.

considering the apple ultra is the best thing apple released since the airpods (imo ofc), its gonna take a lot to get me to upgrade. Ill take 2 gold ultras tho, without hesitation

I think the Ultra is very polarising.

You either really dislike it, or you love it.

I personally don’t like the aesthetics of it, but of course like the rumoured battery life.

I went from the original watch and bought a S8 at 41mm. My wife kept swiping the S8 I found in a thrift store a 44mm S6 for $20.00 no charger and battery was run down. A charge at home and it worked with battery at 96% I then traded the S6 in and bought a 44 Mm s8 the other day so no upgrade is happening this year

I didn’t used to like the aesthetics of it either, and was happy with my S7 Hermes 45mm.

Then last May, Amazon had it at £100 off and pay in 5.

Love it now! It looks better than I thought in the flesh and I get a full 2 days including 1-2 hours of exercise per day.

I still wear my Hermes when I go out for an evening or on the rare occasion I am in the office, but I love everything about the Ultra.

You are right though. Very polarising product. As a fellow Brit, you get what I mean by saying it is Marmite.

Don’t like Marmite, either ;).

I currently have an S5 and have been itching to upgrade for a while now. But every time I compare the features to the current AW it looks like only small differences. The AW5 SS in Rose Gold was almost the one I got last time and kind of disappointed that they removed that finish from the lineup.

Also would like to check out the Ultra 2 although I have a feeling it will look like one of those over-engineered "Swiss Army knife" watches on my wrist.

At any rate, for me, it will come down to features, colors, etc.

Whenever I have the itch to upgrade, I think of the features I really need from a watch and conclude I'm still fine with my S3.

Yesterday I was at a Staples store and they had discounts on more recent AW models, including that S7 blue - love that blue - and almost pulled the trigger, thankfully they were already out of stock lol; It would have been a stupid impulse purchase.

And I can use that money to buy another accessory I really need
