It's refreshing to see someone answer a question, instead of referring a new user to research their question or linking them to an article from Google. The internet would be a much better place if people would give a brief explanation, rather than making people research themselves.

It literally means Restoring your phone to factory settings with iTunes. After that, setting it up as a new phone, not "Restoring From BackUp".

It is a PITA, laborious process, that can result in some limited data loss if you have any Apps that don't have their own cloud backup solution. However, it is the only way to truly evaluate the performance of a new OS.

I did a clean install. I use DiskAid and that lets me see everything on my devices. I don't even have to have them connected with the wifi option. There's probably other apps you can do this with, but I love all the little features this program has.

So I basically made a folder on my desktop, and then offloaded all my stuff with a drag and drop. It asks you if you want the data too, and of course you say yes. Someone noticed that some games are registered to a unique ID, but most of everything I've tried doesn't have that kind of limitation. I've even done copies from one device to another.

I have never done a OTA except for the decimal updates. I've always done it like that with everything. I don't trust the installer to stall and screw everything up.

Ok, but you did address everyone, and there was no hint from OP that he was a beta tester. :)

:)

Invariably, there will be dozens of people that had the beta OS installed, and do not clean install to the public release....and will come here complaining about "bugs" they found in the public release....bugs that are not present in the OS for people did it right.

Also, if you have NOT had iOS 8 beta....there is no reason why you can't restore from backup from iOS 7.x to iOS 8....or even simply OTA update...in fact I would encourage people to do so, as this is what is intended by Apple.

You encourage them to restore but also tell them they can't be taken seriously if they come hear to talk about bugs, that's a bit harsh :D

If a user a has a problem after a restore, yes, one solution might be to do a clean install, but the fact they have a bug shouldn't be something they're afraid to mention.

Perhaps you should fully qualify your original post to specifically address beta testers restoring from beta backups. :D

How to do a clean install on iOS8

I'm puzzled as to how you do a clean install on iOS8 that hasn't been released until later today. Can someone explain how it's done? My iPad is current with iOS7.2

I'll just update over the air initially and then if i have issues in the future then i'll dig out the laptop and do a clean install.

I never really thought of selling devices on eBay, I always go with the reuse/recycle services such as Mazuma Mobile and Envirofone. Mostly because it's just simple and quick and the pay out is usually half the price I originally paid for my iPhone. eBay has a certain risk to it, I think. I think my 5s also has a little too much cosmetic wear for me to get a higher price on eBay.

I would check the price on Mazuma Mobile, put that as your starting price on eBay and if it doesn't sell then you have the Mazuma Mobile price. If it does it'll sell higher. Win either way.

Question for everyone that does the clean install. Doesn't it take hours to put all the apps back on the phone and set up everything else? What about all the pictures and videos?

You better backup your pictures and videos to your computer. It will be gone. A clean install is literally wiping your phone of all data and fresh from the factory settings.

I always clean install, always have. It takes a bit of time but doing it once / year is hardly an extreme amount of effort.

How do you put your photos and videos back on?

I don't use iCloud for anything other than the phones "backup" of settings and sync bookmarks. I manage my picture with my Dropbox, use streaming services for music and never watch videos / record them either. Contacts / calendar are handled by exchange.

An iCloud free life is a happy life.

The post has been reported. I think I read somewhere, that that kind of blasphemy is not allowed. :p

Application saved items back ? Pictures messages ? Or do you guys clean install and load the back up from the old ones ? Can anyone help me out with that ?

You re install the apps manually.

If you restore from backup, it's not a clean install.
