An Apple refurb Pro costs less than the Air when similarly configured. Same warranty.

Also, $1799 is for the quad-core model. The base dual-core model is $1299 with 128 GB SSD, and it's $1499 for the 256. However, for the refurb, it's only $1269, which is $130 less than the Air.

Last week I would have agreed. But I’m thinking then Air might have 802.11ac Wave 2. To be confirmed, but twice the wifi bandwidth vs the modest processor horsepower (I think?) it’s suddently not so cut and dry.

The screen probably tips it in the nTB favour, but I think people are taking a big risk on gen 2 keyboards.

Just bought one for my daughter heading off to college this summer. The screen size vs. weight is ideal for slipping in to a backpack.
Besides, she's been using a 2013 retina MBP, so this will be a huge improvement.

I'm still torn if this one is good for me.
Currently using 13 MBP late 2011 and it's perfectly fine. Long ago I put 8GB of RAM here and 120GB SSD. Would still use it but it didn't get update to macOS Mojave and this bothers me a little. I told myself I change my notebook when it won't going to receive any significant OS updates. So here's the time.

All I'm using my current MBP is for browsing web, Spotify, using Tweetbot. Sometimes I open Photoshop and/or Lightroom and that's all.

I want something lighter and smaller. I guess, whatever I buy this or nTB MBP, it will be huge upgrade. Also I hope, base model will last me for 5 years.

Had exactly the same decision to take. MBP2011 with SSD still runs like a charm. But a bit lighter and a better screen with decent battery life was what made me buy the MBA2018. Unfortunately it's not holding up to my expectations and I will return it back.

- Display is not bright enough (250 nits) compared to the 500 in the MBP nTB
- No difference in performance to my MBP2011 with SSD ( I even feel that my MBO 2011 SSD starts programs faster)
- Battery life below average (I only get a max of 6hrs. with Safari and less with Chrome or Firefox)

As I bought mine here in Germany and the MBA2018 costs 1814 USD (1600€) for the 256gb version - I fell there is no value which justifies this price tag with above mentioned issues.

So I keep my MBA 2011 for a few more years :)

@studium4sk, thanks for that!

Now I found a great deal (at least I think so) for nTB MBP base model for about 100 USD cheaper then the base MBA.
Also I'll get some carrying case and 149 USD on gift card to spend in store which I think, I'll spend on Samsung T5 250GB SSD and some dongles.

With that above this deal is no brainer for me.

trouble is the none touch bar Macbook Pro is a year old (2017), the Touch Bar model is a lot better but for someone who isn't going to make use of all that power it seems a waste. I think it really comes down to what you're doing, if you need video editing or anything like that i would get the Macbook Pro with Touch Bar, if you just need basic stuff i would get the Macbook Air. Personally i've gone back and forward with getting both, so i'm going to the Apple store later this month to make my final decision, i think unless you see the new Air in person it's much more difficult to make a decision.

Yeah, I thought about TB 2018 base model because of power but I'm not going to use all that. Form my use scenario its just overkill. Like I said before all I do is basic stuff and sometimes editing some photos. With MBA I'm little concerned Thant this Y-series processor won't be snappy in 3 to 4 years.

For the pas week I was going back and forth between these three — MBA, nTB MBP, TB MBP. MBP is overkill for me. MBA is nice and light and has Touch ID and is new, like this year. MBP is 2017 and "old one" but with that prices it's great deal.

I'm going to pick it in few days maybe by then the MBA will be on display and I will see but for now nTB MBP for me.

What I’m going to do is go to the Apple store and play around with the new Air, then play around with the Touch Bar MacBook Pro for a while! The great thing about the Apple store is they don’t mind you spending time with the devices and they never pressure you to buy. I suggest if you’re unsure you do the same, that way you can see for yourself if the screen brightness is an issue for you or if it’s snappy enough for you’re personal needs.

I completely agree with you. If you have the chance to compare them side by side it makes the decision easier. Especially the true tone of an MBP vs. no true tone of the MBA.

I recommend as well to run some 4k youtube videos and check if the fan noise is an issue to you. I was surprised how quick the fan of my MBA2018 turned on and blew full speed.
Display brightness, speed and keyboard is something you will eventually adapt to.
Though a fan on high speed when watching a 4k video is something that I could never accept.

Hope this can help a bit to make a decision easier.

Thank you :) I will definitely put some time into checking them out in the Apple store before buying.
