I had a skin the first time I got a MBP... It was okay. Since I got my MBA I decided to go naked and I'll never go back! :D

i think macbooks are already fairly heavy. I have to give it up for people who choose to put another pound on it with a hard shell. it's pretty dedicated.

What about keyboard covers? I've never bought one before and don't really think I am going to unless people find them to be amazing and a must have. I usually clean my keyboards with disinfectant wipes while its off and then wipe with paper towel or microfiber cloth.

As for covers, I don't use one since I didn't like the incase cover on my old mbp but I have a body glove sleeve from my cMBP that I'm using now.

Good idea about the wipes, but stay away from keyboard covers no matter how invisible they claim to be. Keyboard covers belong only in train and gas stations and auto repair shops.

I picked up my ipad today, but have not had a chance to really use it. I decided to pass on the case though... for now.

Naked, but want protection. Ideally something that sticks to bottom and top like a rubber skin. Anyone have any experience with those?

Bestskinsever

Same here. The matte version is incredible and is very hard to tell anything is even on the body. :D

I had a Kuzy case for all of 2-3 days on my rMBP before I took it off and returned it to Amazon. I didn't like the extra bulk that it added to the sleek body. Plus, I believe mine had some fitment issues as it was very hard to put on (it even had this bowing effect like it was bending my screen), plus I had heat issues as well since the fan would ramp up under normal conditions where it was otherwise silent; which, also did not help my battery life. It was probably just a dud for me, but once I took the case off, I was glad to have the naked body again.

The full body matte skin was the way to go for me to get the best of both worlds: as close to naked as possible while providing that little bit of protection since I tend to be quite careful with my belongings.

I also added a keyboard cover and screen protector as well, although, their value have yet to be determined at this point, but it does offer some slight peace of mind. :p

Ok Bestskinever looks like it would do the job. But it is transparent, and I really hate the glowing apple logo.

Anyone here know of custom stickers to cover it up without an overlap? A smooth metal finish looks much nicer IMO anyway, like:

I knew that will get your attention. :p

This is my first mac and I went all out. To protect my mbp, I purchased a sleeve from incase and had ordered moshi shell that was set for store pickup.

The sleeve was delivered to me and I've been using it for the past 2 weeks. I purposely delayed picking up the shell, but I'm heading to the apple store to pick up my ipad air tonight.

I wanted your feedback on the need for a shell. I carry my mbp in the sleeve and it's worked so far. At home, I use my mb mainly on my bed/desk and it's clean enough that I don't have a risk of scratches.

I'm a consultant and move my laptop around during a workday - meetings, presentations, different desks, airports, planes, etc. It's only 2 weeks and obviously there are no scratches.

Are these really prone to scratches that it's worth protecting right now. I like the look of the naked mac, but would rather protect it if needed.

Please let me know. BTW, I got the black case.

I bet your going to cook it... but at least it won't have any dings or scratches.

I am too OCD about my apple products, so no, my MBP is not naked, however that really doesn't help much since dirt is stuck between the case and the MBP.

I dont see the point with covering these products with a shell. Same with phones. You bought it to use it, and Im sure like me part of the appeal of it is its aesthetics. Then you cover it for most of your ownership with a plastic cover :S

Why? So the next owner can enjoy it even more? it just doesnt make sense.

Same with phones, I have a Note 3 too and there's no way I'd want to spoil my experience with it by covering it up just so someone else can enjoy a spotless 2nd hand purchase. They're made to be used. Besides, the rMBP is hard to scratch (unlike it's non-retina predecessor). Ive scraped the bottom of it against my belt buckle a couple of times and there are no scratches or scuffs to be seen anywhere on it. Wouldn't worry about it.

Fyi, Im obviously very careful with it, its still an expensive product. Also transport it using a booq mamba slim messenger style case. Its still flawless. But I'd never put a hard cover on it. I enjoy that feel of the cold metal too much

The aluminium shell of the rMBP is part of its thermal formula. The reason the shell gets warm/hot is that it assists in radiating the internal heat away.

If you cover your rMBP you change its thermal formula as you greatly reduce its possibility to radiate away the heat.
This means that you mac will run hotter and as such its internal parts might wear quicker as you compromised the thermal formula!!

Macs are made to run naked!!

I wouldn't cover it during use, the aluminum shell is part of their cooling system as it was designed. If you start putting clothes on top, you may be protecting the shell from scratches, while hurting the internals with extra heat.

Your choice as to what may be more important to you...

I kept my mid-2009 15" naked (with a sleeve to carry it around) and treated it like a baby... no scratches on the top side but the bottom plate got scratched even by rough wood tables in my house.

This time I bought a transparent Speck hard case :)

The bare minimum would be the bottom half of a hard case IMO, the top side won't get scratched so easily as long as you use the machine carefully.

I couldn't go bare .... always get's my students talking and not bad for £8/$13

And if I crash on a trip, they'll find me :)
