Well, only technically since I just sent out the check for a quad 2.5 G5, I guess I joined the Power Mac club :D. I know the specifics, feed it more RAM, yada yada yada.

Still, the thing is, let's say I want to make sure the thing is not leaking on arrival (shipping accidnets do happen). Should I be looking at the use manual to see where I should be looking? Will there be some telltale green ooze at the bottom of the case? Or can I even check it at all? Kernel Panics and Random shutdowns are an obvious indicator, but I want to salvage my machine if something goes down the creek....

Anyways, I'm 99% stoked on getting this machine, you just read the other 1%. I haven't used OSX in faaar too long... :D Not since my G3 decided to explode a few years ago.

I'm using a PowerMac G5 1.8GHz with Tiger, but not professionally ... Mostly surfing the web and using it for music / pictures. Yeah, it's a bit sluggish, but I like it...

Still using a G4 PowerBook 1.67 to work with HDV video in FCP 6.0.2, Photoshop CS2 and recently CS3 and lastly I use Lightroom to work with Canon 40D RAW files.

I have a Mac Pro in work where I continue on my FCP projects and do all the rendering, encoding and compressing. I'm holding off my home purchase until Snow Leopard is released.

I'm still using a G5 Dual 2.0 (Nov. 2005) with a Nvidia 7800gt graphics card and 6GB of RAM for Aperture. It was fine, but recently I'm getting the rainbow after every edit and it's driving me nuts. Seriously considering switching to Lightroom, especially since I'm getting more pro work, or maybe I should just get an imac.

I still love and use my G5 passionately, which isn't in the poll list.

Dual 2.7, 8GB 10.5. Released May 2005.

I use it more than the Mac Pro. The joy always remains from the day I first got the G5. Where the Mac Pro is nowhere near the same as the G5 love.

g5 2x 2.3ghz

got my 2.3ghz x2 g5 a month ago.. its was a speed diff compare to my another 1.8ghx x2. used for 2 weeks the psu burnt with no mark or smell. took it out and mod in a Coolermaster 500W PSU inside and its running back now.

Used it as a secondary pc, web surfing, musics, vids, wow, and slight photoshop work. All i can say it worth it.

I am using a 2.0 GHz late 2005 dual core G5 I inherited from someone that upgraded to a new iMac 24". My old machine was a Quicksilver 867GHz and to me the speed increase was VERY evident. Mainly, I use it for heavy word processing (translation) with several dictionaries and web sites open at the same time as MS Word 2004. Makes for a nice easy-to-work-on system.
Lots of life left in these old beasts!:D

I have a Quad G5 with the max RAM and 2 10K Hard Drives and it runs really fast for an "obsolete" PPC Mac.
I love it, even if it has liquid cooling.

Looked around for the ATI card that would have been a serious upgrade for my machine and can't find it for cheap. The least I've seen it go for is $350 and that's too much for a machine this old.

If I remember I had originally the ATI 128MB VRAM card (9600?) but when it died I upgraded to the ATI X850XT (or whatever it is) with 256MB. It cost me a fortune at the time because I wasn't quite sure what was wrong with my machine and took it to a reseller who charged me an arm and a leg for the card as well as fitting it. They also didnt do a very god job as they installed the wrong firmware so the GPU fan wouldnt spin and the machine kept mysteriously switching off. I noticed then that the tower was amazingly hot and thought I would check everything was ok when I spotted the fan not working. I found the correct firmware and never had a problem since. :D

My G5 is still running like a Champ but my Rev A MacBook is starting to die. Battery health is about 74%. the optical drive no longer works (thanks Apple) and the screen is starting to flicker. :(

I'm trying to think which would be best to upgrade first the MB or G5?

If you mean upgrade to a more recent model, then the G5 --> Mac Pro.

If you mean upgrade parts wise, then possibly the Macbook since it would just run faster than the G5.... but the G5 does have more upgrade options..... hmm.... tough choice.

I have an early 2005 liquid cooled DP G5 2.7 also and I think you and I are the only posters with a dual 2.7! I love my machine too. Mine still runs solidly without any hiccups or weird tendencies that shouldn't occur. I used to max it out more than I do now and if I bought another Mac soon I would probably be able to make due with an iMac. (cringing) I would love to see Apple make a mid tower with an i7. They could call it the "Mac Pro Jr." or something corny like that. I need expansion slots. It may spew liquid someday but not yet. It will someday be relegated to a lower status when Apple quits making security updates. Hopefully that will not be as soon as the Snow Leopard release.

Tidbit:
I seem to remember the 2.7 benched about the same numbers as a 3.0 Xeon at the time.

I use my dual CPU G5 1.8GHz everyday! Still love the machine and its fast enough for most things I do.
Next to it I use my MacBook unibody 2.4GHz Ic2d, nice compact and fast machine, great for traveling.

Duff-Man says...I had one of the very first liquid cooled dual 2.5 G5's in Canada and just "retired" it last month. It certainly did the job for me and had lots of life left in it - I just used my moving as a good excuse to clean out some old things and start fresh. The fellow I sold it to was quite happy to get it and will no doubt get several more years of decent service from it...oh yeah!

Still using G4

I'm still using my 400 MHz AGP G4, with OS 9 which I bought new 9 years ago! I haven't upgraded because it has been doing it's job OK all this time (recording music with Logic 4.7) and I could never justify the money.... until now that is. Finally gearing up for a new machine, was looking at an iMac, but think I'm gonna go for a quad-core 2009 Pro. As far as I can tell, it'll probably have to last for another 9 years!
But I do love my G4, it has never given anything but 100% amazing and reliable service. I think I will have to keep it as I am so attached to it, and in fact I think it could still have a use, as a machine to record live audio on location. As it's practically worthless in monetary terms, once I have a modern Mac at home, I won't be scared of carting it about.

Wow, you never moved to OS X in all these years? If you don't mind me asking, what web browser are you using? OS 9 is still a serviceable OS except for the fact that there isn't a single good modern browser available for it.

I have the same model G4; that system will run up to 10.4 without breaking a sweat. With a little upgrading it will run 10.5. too, which is what I have done.
