Nope... makes no sense to me to jump from one generation to the next. The real life gains will be insignificant.

I upgrade my laptop every 3 years.

i guess for the rest of us, who's working hard for the money to buy oour little expensive toys.. and not asking our folks to pay for it..
it's hard to upgrade every 6 months:)

Very happy with mine (in sig). No need to upgrade now. I'd really only benefit from the increased GPU and a little better battery life. I'll wait another year or two.

do you guys think the NEW NEW updated mont. chips will be more expensive than they are now? do you think the entry price will be 1999 in june aug?

looking to upgrade

bought my mbp in november. looking to upgrade to the new one now. doing video editing, would improve performance.

Well I'd love to keep this Merom one but I need to exchange it for a Penryn, luckily still within the 14 days.

The screen isn't perfect but I can live with it, it even has that static noise when I use headphones(apparently all Santa Rosa machines have this?), but the thing that is really making me do it is the light buzzing noise from the right fan that in quiet environments just kills me. My old MacBook has an annoying high pitched noise that it makes from the CPU that gets worse when plugged in I would say this fan buzzing isn't as bad but since I'm paying more I want it to be quiet.

No, not at all especially if upgrading is not going to cost you anything but how can you be making money on outdated hardware?

Going from the previous 2.2 to the new 2.4, I made 350$. I sold my 2.2 right before the penryn's were released: if I had waited until they were out, I never would have been able to sell it for that much. Also, I buy them at a very nice price, so selling them for more is not an issue. One contributing factor was that in Canada the price of Penryn's has fallen by 100$. So that added to the profit this time.

And next time, here's the problem: even if I wanted to keep this one, how could I not justify selling it to upgrade to montevina? Even if I only made 100$, or even made no money at all, as long as the switch can be made without loss it's worth it. I guess it depends who you're talking to though: I can live without my computer for a few days as there are others in my household I can freeload off of.

just crazy

i keep my computers for a looong time

i thought it was too soon to go from 1ghz g4 to cd 2 ghz at the time

Haha I hear you! My computers have gone from P75 -> K6-2 333MHz -> P4 2.8GHz -> SR Merom MBP 2.4GHz. Thats a good 4-5 years between them, with at least 10x performance increase. I would have stayed with the P4 machine, but I wanted to switch to a Mac and a laptop. =)

I used to keep my computers for a long time, but for some reason Apple makes me want to spend, spend, spend for the newest and fastest.

i'm not jumping on the hard drive for now..
remember that SSD technology is here..
in a few months, the prices will surely go down..
might as well wait for that

I think it will be some time until SSD competes in price. Can't beat $300 for 500GB, right now and I am down to 20GB free on my current drive.

Now I can see why there are so many recycled computers in the world. Find another hobby dude, you don't need to change computers every 6 months, that's really extreme.

so if changing computers every six months is being extreme, then what do you call someone like me that changes around every three or four months?

foolish? whatever.... I just like to have the latest and greatest. that's all.

I think it's awesome, if you can do it, then do it.

still using my core duo 2.0Ghz MBP 15". First model released, it's over 2 yrs old now... still cranks too.

Will probably upgrade later this year. would be nice if there was a high-res 15" display coming...

I have a 1st gen Alu PowerBook that is 4 1/2 years old and it still runs like a champ. Probably another year or two when I consider purchasing a new Mac. I always upgrade the OS when a new major version comes out. So the determining upgrade factor would be whether my PB is still supported.

one word: RICH

:D

neah, not really. I just have a decent paying job and an extremely low cost of living lifestyle which is great.

the house and the car are paid for and the credit card(s) are usually paid off every month which means finance companies get hardly anything from me when interest comes to mind.

yes, life is good. :)

just got my new mbp 2.5 today:D very happy the only problem I am having is with trying to install my windows with bootcamp....not installing proper.

Well I did a swap from a Merom to a Peryn if that counts. I bought 3 week (plus a fluke) in advance hoping to get a swap.

That's pretty easy. Just put the installation disc in, install like you normally would and then install the drivers immediately.

I have the 2.4ghz SR mbp and I'm not upgrading to the newer penryn models, BUT I'm considering to sell it for the 17" mbp with hi res led...

Im still on the fence with this purchase. i wish they weren't facing a redesign so soon.

I think the education price for MBP 2.4 ghz with 250 HD is great, 1850:), but I really wanted to get a faster FSB, and get as close to 3 ghz as possible. So that keeps me waiting a bit. 1066 fsb is closer to a new desktop. SATA HD would be nice to.

last year my GF bought a 80 gig ipod for like 349 then two months later the 160 gig came out for cheaper, that sucks, I dont want that to happen with this computer.
