We were talking about this today. What do you think the odds are that Apple will include the iPad in the back-to-school discount? It could be a really great way to juice sales of both laptops and the iPad. Say you're thinking about getting a MBP or MB. You get the education discount and you get $199 that you can apply to an iPod or an iPad! So now you get the iPad for $300.

You don't have to use it yourself. "Say mom (dad, grandma, aunt), if you buy me a laptop for this fall you can get an iPad for only $300 (or maybe a better deal than that?). Could be good leverage if you are looking for funding.

I'm in. The only times I have ever purchased brand new from Apple were during their back to school promo to offset the price(turned around and sold the iPod touch both times). I bought an iMac in June 2008 and my 13" MBP in July 2009.

Yeah, that would be awesome. The iPad is a perfect device for students, imagine not having to carry around all these heavy books any more. So I wouldn't call it unrealistic since the back to school action in the end is for.. students :D

Erm, I'm not too convinced the iPad will be in this year's, at least, Back to School promotion. Back to school's one part market penetration, and one part clear inventory for September iPods. In this case, the iPad will still be on its sugar high from launch. It'd be way too soon for Apple to consider it for the Back to School promotion.

On the other hand, Apple really wants to market this product as a text-book e-reader; so it would only make sense for it to be included in a Back To School promotion.

I say call back in 2011.

Hey, I'm new here, joined only a few weeks ago. :)

I'm waiting for the refresh before I make the switch. This will be my first mac, though not the first time using one as my ex-gf had one. However, I am a student and wanna maximise my bang for the buck. I remember last year around august/september, the apple shop in Glasgow (I live in Scotland) were giving away free ipods when you buy a mac. This was the first time they done it, and the employees don't know if it will be repeated this year as the store was only opened about a year and a half ago. From these forums, it seems to me that apple does this promotion every year in the US but does anyone know if other UK stores follow this trend?

As far as I know it is in every country. Even in Holland which is a pretty small country :p

The Back-to-School Promotion is a worldwide event despite different regions having different education terms. As someone in this thread mentioned, the New Zealand back-to-school promotion is just ending. I think it has has little to do with clearing inventory and a lot to do with simple marketing.

I'm sure Apple can anticipate demand to ensure that they don't have an enormous supply of iPods come September; They don't need the promotion. After all, the promotion is a regular yearly thing—not a case-by-case reaction to extra supply.

Considering how Apple is positioning the iPad as a textbook-reader and is concerned about its reception at its current price, I wouldn't be surprised to see the iPad thrown into the promotion.
