I honestly don't remember, I just remember one time I was up all night only to find out they never went on sale until later in the afternoon.
I never really understood it either. I guess it just makes things more dramatic? Apple has a flare for the dramatic.
Apple fails? I am pretty sure they are doing this completely on purpose to avoid the onslaught they usually have to deal with. I suspect that at some random time during the day, preordering will begin without any further announcements. Possibly even without the Apple Store going down beforehand.
All of the people refreshing constantly to try to order would do the same type of damage, this is usually how denial of service attacks work.
I put this thread on instant notification and I'm hoping someone here will alert me because I can't do the constant refreshing

while we're here...any read need for 128 GB? On my iPhones, I always get 64 GB and usually have at least 30% available, often more

It only says October 17th on the site. Maybe they meant in 2015
I always get the 128GB but that's cause I have tons of music and lots of games that are several gb each. I also like to store HD movies and tv shows that take up a bunch of space. Otherwise I'd say 64gb is plenty for most people. My 128GB 6+ only has like 5GB free space left
