I've been watching Mac Minis on Ebay, especially the first gen versions very closely.

They make perfect little boxes for media streaming. Just upgrade the RAM and HD and BAM you've got yourself the perfect little media box.

Put Windows 7 on it and some usb TV tuner and you're set!

...even with the GMA graphics on those initial machines?

Still got my core duo MBP and It's in nearly mint shape. This latest upgrade while pretty decent aren't quite enough for the trouble just yet. My splurge this year us putting a 500gb hard drive in it.

a friend has one it it has gone through every possible repair and the thing is still solid. He wants to get the new 17" but says he will keep his until it stops working. He still has apple care I think.

How do they handle 1080p and streaming video (Hulu)? My BlackBook's fans kick in big time for streaming, but it works.

I have a friend who does exactly that on an older G4 mini and it does just fine. I'm looking for a first gen Intel Mac Mini for Windows to hook directly up to the sound system and the HDTV. I already do it with my MBP and it works great.

My problem is that my DSL connection is just too slow to stream real time HD.

Otherwise it works out great.

I'm still running an original 1.83 Core Duo MBP.

It's third battery is on the way out, it had it's fans replaced last year and the complete screen & top case replaced earlier this year.

The AppleCare runs out at the end of August so I'll still be using it for at least the next two months. :D

Don't count on it. (I was hoping the same thing LOL)

Applecare just called me. They've replaced the top case, bottom case, screen, screen bezel, keyboard, both fans and the logic board. WTF else is left?

Would you trade a 2.16 17" 1Gen for a brand new 13"/15" MBP? (or an MBA?) I have a couple of gifts headed my way and my mother wants to buy me a new machine and keep my old one. I've spent 5 days racking my head on whether to go for it. Options are a 13"/15" high end/MBA. The new 17" is out of the budget. I've been flip flopping. The 13" *could* work for me, I'd rather go all out portable with the MBA. The 15" is nice, but screen real estate drops down.
The 13" is also too cheap :). Replacing a 17" would cost a lot more.

I don't do anything hard core. Some photo editing, light movies, my main need is screen real estate. I'm a researcher and usually have two browsers, a WORD doc etc open. I'm also working abroad in the field so a external screen is out of the question.

Decisions, decisions. I'm tempted to forget the idea and keep my 17" but the thought of a brand new machine does have me excited.

What, if anything, is a good trade for my machine?

I'm so glad there are fellow Core Duoers on this board. It seems like the board moved on quite quickly. The major upgrade I've done to mine is adding a 500 GB HD -- worth EVERY penny! I had my video card and screen replaced under AppleCare.

I've still got my Core Duo macbook which is going strong with it's 60gb hard drive ;)

I've bought an external harddrive and an extra stick of ram to bump it up to 2gb, and it's still going strong.

It's had a new superdrive, new topcase, been in for the random shutdowns, and a new battery, all in the first year.

Recently upgraded my 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor - Santa Rosa MBP

4 GB RAM
500 GB Scorpio Blue

Runs solid and should last me through a few more updates before I buy again

Can you pay the difference and get the 17"? Seems like the best option. Otherwise, MBA is a fantastic machine, but screen real-estate is lacking vs. your 17...

Do you think you will be interested in upgrading when Apple releases the PowerBook G5? ;)

No I'm waiting for the 32 core 300 GHz PowerHeater G10 to come out. (with 10 second battery:))

(really just a quad core nelaham based MBP 17)

PS: I'm on a battery from 2004 with 668 cycles on it. Still lasts 2 hours!

Posting from my iPhone and apologize for grammar and structure and any repitition :)

So here's the deal. I just picked up my trusty workhorse. They've replaced the keyboard, video display panel, logic board, top case, bottom case, display bezel, both fans and the airport extreme card. I practically have a new machine here!

I also spent 3 hours drawing attention from security for walking around with MY machine comparing it to every laptop on display LOL

For any of you with a non umibody MBP, the new ones are cool but the screens are way way more reflective than ours. Mines glossy FYI.

The 15" is out of running. Too little offered over the 13 and not really any more portable than my 17.

The MBA is nice but I could see the lines clearly and need more HD space. I work in a jungle and watch movies on pirated DVDs. By the time I take a SuperDrive and an external, the portability is moot.

I replicated my workflow on all 4 machines and for my traveling and writing needs, I could get used to the lower screen real estate .. As a second computer.

I've decided to skip the gift offer, I don't want to part with my old classic, overhauled and better looking (I luke the all silver look) MBP. plus, I've got sentimental reasons. What can I say? I'm a collector.

I'm going to keep my rocking machine. Instead of replacing it or giving it away. And paying the difference, I'll spend the difference on a 13 inch for the road. Ill relegate the big boy to a home desktop for the wife or a future media server.

May not be the most logical choice but it makes me happy :) my 17 has been around the world with me and I have a lot of memories. I'll keep it around. Wierd to feel this way about a computer but it's been with me during some life changing events and I'm attached to it and don't want to part with it.

I'm going to pick up the base 13", upgrade the HD to 250g for 50 bucks, put that in my old workhorse and buy a 7200 500G drive for the little guy.

Again, this is from my iPhone and may not be the most readable post

still rocking my 2.0 GHz MBP. had a logic board replacement, 2 battery replacements (new battery is around 3 hours) and now the screen whines when i first turn it on and i get hangs when it gets too hot. i cant afford a new one :( but i would love a 13" MBP.

Snow Leopard runs fine on the Core Duos its just everything will run in 32-bit mode.

I still have my first generation 15 inch 2.16ghz Macbook Pro. It's been a good machine, but I really need a decent battery now with the more traveling and mobile work I do, and the 2 hour battery life isn't cutting it anymore.

That doesn't sound too solid to me? Why doesn't Apple just give him a new computer?

I've got a CoreDuo BlackBook, for whatever that's worth. Hasn't let me down yet... though the fans seem to come on more now than they used to.

Nonetheless, I'll be upgrading to the 13" Pro.

Love the sig too "13" MacBook Pro: Pissing off elitist Mac users since 2009!" (I added that so when you change your sig, it'll be preserved for as long as the internet is alive haha)

I'm still rocking my 2GHz Core Duo black MacBook. I was considering purchasing the new 13 MBP released last week but I don't want to part with my MacBook. I don't know what to do with two 13" notebooks so I'm not getting a new one. I've decided to rock it until it dies.

The only repairs I've had are top case repairs (3x)

Haha, that's my situation exactly. I was really tempted to upgrade to the white NVIDIA MB, but I just couldn't accept going from Black to White. Silly, yes, but I love my BlackBook still!

I might keep it around as a media centre/secondary machine, even though I know that's silly. But I've had it for three years now and it's never let me down. :)

you know whats the best part? theres like no difference really between a cd blackbook and the newest mb's in day to day usage

My first generation Blackbook is running strong still. I have had the battery replaced 2 times for free. I upgraded the ram to 2gigs when I bought it. Other than that I have done nothing to it.

Someone at work spilled a whole cup of coffee right on the keyboard. The machine shut off and I ripped the battery out as quick as I could. I had to open the entire machine and clean with denatured alcohol and distilled water. I used a whole bunch of qtips too. There was puddles of coffee inside the case :(. It's been going strong for 8 months now after that incident. :D

So, do you guys think Snow Leopard is going to run better or the same on our Core Duos with the 2 GIG ram limit?

I was still using my MPB CD till my girlfriend bought me one of these 24' imacs... :-D I was almost sad to release the old laptop in the cupboard... :)

I had the lid, the logic board and the lid replaced... but it's running pretty well. I still have Tiger on it but I will install Snow Leopard :)

i'm still rockin' my 15" macbook pro core duo 2.16GHz w/ 2gb ram. run great..
replaced battery twice, one with the global recall program..
waitin' for Arrandale to update my notebook.
