That's what I did. Sold my 3G for $400 and bought the new one for $499. Then AT&T changed their policy and it ends up I'm getting a $200 refund so I actually made money and got a new phone.

Id rather pay the $699, for the money you "made" you guaranteed them $2400 over next 2 years and most likely wont be in the early upgrade time frame for the next iPhone they release.
