I just purchased an iPad, and I have an iPhone 4 as well. I primarily use my iPad at home for Twitter, web browsing, email and eventually, an e-reader. I've rarely used my MacBook Pro this week since I brought the iPad home. Although I have found that if I'm typing up a rather long email, I would rather use my MBP over my iPad. I basically use my iPhone for email, twitter, facebook, etc when I'm obviously not at home. So yes, a lot of things you do on your iPad, you can do on your iPhone, but I don't think you'll regret the purchase.

I think most people here are iphone owners who got a ipad second.
Anyway, screen size. It makes a big difference.

Ok. Here is a specific question.

I have heard reading outside on an iPad is rough, due to very bad glare. I have only played with one inside. Is the glare that bad? Same or worse than on the iPhone?

I guess it's the same, but because the iPad is larger and heavier, it's a bit harder to find a comfortable way to hold it so as to avoid reflections etc.

Compared to the iPhone, the iPad definitely is a device that you tend to use indoors but not out.

On the subject of iPad vs. laptop, BTW, my own experience has been different from other posters' -- the iPad has made my MacBook feel redundant, and kind of clunky . This didn't happen right away, and a lot of it has do to with getting used to typing on the virtual keyboard.

There's no question that the iPad feels easier and less obtrusive to carry into a meeting or a classroom or something like that. It's like holding a pad of paper in your hand -- there isn't the same feeling that you're sitting behind a computer. And other people in the room don't seem to perceive it as a breach of etiquette, as they might if you were hunched over a laptop or squinting at a smartphone. If you want to show them something, you just flip it around, or pass it around the table, as you would a printed document.

Ok. So I'm convinced. My new question is wifi or 3G. My personal feeling is wifi, because I will always have my phone on me. And my primary usage on the iPad will be at home with wifi. What have your experiences been? If you have the wifi do you wish you had the 3G?

I had bought a 64gb wifi iPad and once the iPhone 4 came out I sold the iPad and got a uMBP. Best decision I made. I found myself using the iPhone 4 way more, and no matter what people say, it really is just a big iPhone/iPod. At this point i would either wait for the next iPad or get the new air. I wouldnt bother with the current iPad imo.

it's funny that when the ipad came out people defended it by saying "it's not just a big ipad touch"

but it really is. it's a neat device, but you are only paying for screen size and you are lacking video chat/RAM/phone capabilities.

I got the 3G model. Don't really need 3G...ever (have WiFi at work and home). :) But I wanted it for those occasions when I did need. And those would be when I'm travelling and on the highway the little kid wants to "check my fish" or watch something that's only on the home computer (over AirVideo). Basically bring sanity to travel. :D

I had an iPod Touch first, then gave it to one of the kids when I got my Ipad and now I have an iPhone. I am super loving the iPhone but it can't replace my iPad since I use my iPad to take notes during meetings at work, display files for clients, handle my ToDo list for the day at work and more. The iPhone just doesn't have a big enough screen or keyboard to do what I need.

The iPhone 4 makes the iPad not as awesome as it was when it first launched. But that isn't to say that I don't love my iPad. It's replaced my MacBook Air as my go to travel computer and any other time I need more than my phone to accomplish something. My iPad is on the coffee table for use during a commercial or to visit a site I see advertised on TV. I use it to cook with. I load video on it more than anything else.

I'm 50/50 on the gaming thing. Some games are better on the iPad while others aren't so much. Super Mega worm is better on the iPhone that the iPad due to the frame rate problems on the iPad. But the SNES emulator on the iPad is a winner for the most part so...

All I know is that I want the next gen iPad but the iPhone 4 has set the bar pretty high. I know the processor and ram will be upgraded... I'm praying for an even higher res screen. If the iPad was the book reader Apple wants it to be and yet text looks 4 times better on the iPhone 4.... one can only hope they bring a retina screen to the next iPad.

Trying to decide if that at all makes any sense to do..........

I do not own an Ipad however I have tried them before on various occasions...

When my grandmother was sick me and my dad would let her use our ITouches (Mine is now an Iphone) so she could entertain herself and leave us the hell alone when we where at home xD. She loved it, however she complained about the small screen... At the same time she did not have a feasible music player either so we decided to get her an Ipad for her birthday.

so all in all. I find my phone (3gs) to be adequate enough for just about anything (other than one little thing I will explain in a second). and I'm sure the Iphone 4 usurers even more so with a clearer camera and a bigger battery.

Now I like to game, maybe not as big of a hardcore gamer as others but I still love it. And I'm happy with the few but awesome games I can use/get on my Iphone. But other than 2 of the original sonic tittles (some of the time its annoying playing with the lack of a button to feel your movement) and the RPGs, the games are just a quick novelty you fiddle with, or check on every few hours. (and the ones that are not are still kind of sub-par but still good for a phone.) My laptop or game systems serve as a better area for gaming. I would not be trying to play something like TF2 or Starcraft 2 or Ragnarok on an Iphone, and upgrading to a bigger screen like the Ipad dose not help that situation at all.

This is not to say the Ipad is for old people with poor eyesight, its to say that it feels redundant and almost a waste of cash if you already have one.

(then again I bought a 3GS a week before the Iphone 4 came out intentionally because I wanted to save 100$ so maybe I'm just overly cheep, but I don't care about the camera and the charger is so small I can take it anywhere =p)

but that is just the way I feel about it.

Comp+Iphone dose not = Oversized Itouch with comp capabilities.

Edit:
Ya know, Maybe I just don't get it. I'm a PC not a Mac however I love the Iphone and the mac's keyboards xD but other then that I am a PC and that may be why I don't understand the people who find it necessary to get both the Iphone and Ipad.

iPad: Now or later?

I am on a pretty tight budget. I have Verizon for wireless family plan (x5) combined with Fios tv and internet. I've been waiting forever for Verizon to carry the iPhone....hopefully this will happen sooner than later. But for me, I will use the iPad very differently (from the iPhone).

I have an older MBP (still love it) and a PC through work. I think that the iPad would be a great organizer for me (taking notes at various meetings, keeping documents organized, portability but large enough screen size). It really bothers me that there is no usb port; and I'm also still trying to decide whether to go 3G or just wifi (with mifi).

My biggest dilemma is whether to get the iPad now or wait for the next generation. I remember waiting forever several years ago for the 'next generation' of MBP and I was glad I did. However, the iPad would make life a LOT easier now. Again, though, the $$$$$$$ is a factor for me (kids in college, drive old cars, etc.).

So i'd appreciate any feedback/opinions. Thanks!

Well, I bought my iPad yesterday. I purchased the 16gb 3G. As I posted earlier I intended to get the WiFi, but was convinced by my wife that there would be times I (we) would want to use it when there's no WiFi.

My initial impressions are so far positive. I find that I am using it for any in-depth surfing, email, facebook and MR. But it has only been 24 hours. I spent last night researching an "office" app so i can try to integrate the iPad into my work (I'm a teacher). I decided on docs to go. And from what I can tell it seems nice, but I really haven't used it yet.

I can tell you that what I want is iOS 4, instead of 3. I don't have folders, or multitasking, which apparently I use a lot on my phone, although I didn't realize it until the iPad.

It is definitely redundant with the iPhone so far, but I am just starting to figure out its capabilities, and I am certain it will perform tasks for me that the phone is just not enough for. As I said, I really want to use for work. I also did a fair amount of reading on it last night, and it was a far better expeience than trying to read on the phone. I now see the advantage of e-readers.

As for whether waiting for the next gen is worth it, only you can know that. I knew that I was able to buy it now. I assumed the next one wouldn't be available for a good 6 months. The current version is fast enough for me, and I have no need for any camera(s) that may show on gen 2.

So that's it for now. I'm happy with my purchase. And I am certain that I will only find more uses for it as time goes on.
