Based on most celebrities, I'm going with interbreeding.![]()
It's something I've always wondered about. I am of course aware that there is also certain actors, singers and other famous people who are tall, but if you do a bit of googling on this topic or maybe meet some celebs in real life you will quickly notice that many, many actors and singers are extremely and unusually short.
I recently watched The Big Bang Theory and recognized two of the kids from Rosanne. I remember that they were short back than and John Godman, an average sized man, seemed tall compared to them. They didn't seem short in the show, because all their co-actors are tiny! Jim Parsons (Sheldon Cooper) seems tall compared to the rest of the bunch and he isn't exactly tall in real life.
Scott Caan, Kanye West, Prince, Michael Jackson, Tom Cruise, Michael J. Fox, Natalie Herschlag, Danny DeVito, Scarlett Johannson, Elijah Wood, the list goes on and on. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Snoop Dogg seem like giants compared to other celebs and they are shorter than me and most other grown males I deal with in real life. I've been to LA many times and some friends of mine work in the industry. When I stand next to them they look like little children
Is Hollywood munchkinland or does fame stunt growth?

Kanye West 173cm

I feel like Gandalf visiting the Shire here. At least I see Frodo.
Someone tell me the guy who portrays Gregor "the Mountain that Rides" Clegane is taller. Not exactly 8 feet tall, but at least he wouldn't be mistaken for Tyrion "the Imp" Lannister like most of this list.![]()
Martin Scorcese 163cmI hadn't noticed that celebrities tend to be short, tall, or average - just that they seem to kind of represent the same basic spread of height that non-celebrities represent.
I was once told a story that Hollywood female actors, were in the past chosen if they were small because, that way the male actors wouldn't be overshadowed by them.

Name five tall (taller than 185cm) and extremely famous directors, please. The obvious problem with your premise — and pardon me for taking this more seriously than it probably should be — is that you haven't established factually that celebrities are actually shorter, or if you're just assuming they are based on some unscientific sampling or observation.
Are some celebrities short? Sure. But there are tall ones and average ones as well. I haven't seen anything to indicate that celebrities are anything other than what one would expect in a general population.
Feel free to provide evidence (not personal observation) to the contrary.
Martin Scorcese 163cm

... You are looking at this from a too scientific angle.
It's an affliction ... especially around here.
Sometimes you have to fight it back for the sake of Community, but it's hard sometimes.
As a group, the average height of actors ... is 5-feet-10 for males and 5-feet-5 for females ... and the average height of best actor winners [in the Academy Awards] is 5-feet-11 and of best actresses is 5-feet-5 1/2 inches.
... The average American male is only 5 feet, 9 1/2 inches tall, and the average female is just 5 feet 4 inches.

It is hard. Why speculate on a subject when there's no reason to believe it's even true?
I've noticed that many actors appear to be rather short, although admittedly I'm quite tall myself and this may be distorting my perception.
Does anyone know if this apparent height difference holds in general?
For the sake of fun, let's assert that it is true. What might be the factors contributing to this? What kind of stratification might there be in the population? Are there differences in effect for men versus women? What about those who work largely in Hollywood movies? Independent movies? Non-american movies? How might this change across genre?
I realize that's a lot of unanswerable speculation, but maybe this will open up some interesting discussion on casting culture/choices more broadly?

Celebrities come in all sizes?
Mind blown.
I know. I just didn't want to write that because people will call me crazy againUp to a certain point, it seems.
Though I think everyone is missing the obvious here. It's very well possible all our celebrities are genetic experiments grown in vitro in some lab somewhere.
The guys in that picture are all relatively short (the tallest one only measuring 5'10!), which kind of speaks for my theory, and the list you posted to are actors (not directors) many of which I've never heard of. Seems like they had a realy hard time getting a few guys taller than 6'3 together.
We already had Herr Hitler, Georg Clooney is pretty hot and now if we can inject some references to the 2nd amendment and butt sex, we might. e able to get this moved to PRSIBut it'd probably just devolve into a thread about how hot X, Y, and Z are.
That is actually an excellent counterthesis. It is hard. Why speculate on a subject when there's no reason to believe it's even true?
I have no idea about the validity of the following claim. But I did find an article about the height of actors ...
So according to these claims the title of the thread should be, "Why are actors so tall?"
