Go and buy a 3G touch screen phone with better battery life then, oh wait there isn't one.

Your asking Apple to do something that isn't possible. ...

ok im not asking apple to do anything besides not lie. is it that tough. i dont care what the battery life is, as long as they give figures remotely close to the actual data achieved by real life tests

i don't understand what everyone else is doing, but my 16gb iphone 3G lasts me all day with constant usage, hell i didn't even have to charge it over night last night and i still have more then 50% left..

Thanks for that link! This B&D product seems to be the solution for all power problems, doesn't it? What speaks against it? Okay - there may be a charging time but I am sure one can use the iPhone while charging with this "mobile outlet".

Another question (thanks for reading): Can the iPhone be charged via USB by a MBP's battery?

Well I work helpdesk, doing deskside support, so the bulk of my day I'm running around fixing things. So I can't very well have it at my desk plugged in charging while I'm running around. That would defeat the purpose of having the phone so I can get email while away from my desk. I barely used the phone all day. I just checked email on it a couple times. I surfed the web (over wifi) for about 5 min before a meeting. I showed a coworker super monkey ball for maybe 5 -10 min. That's it. I didn't even make it to the end of the day before the 20% warning came up. Now I'm at my second job and I have it plugged in charging. I'm sorry, but with the limited use I gave it I think it should be able to last longer than 8 hrs.

So from this thread it is obvious that some Apple Fanboys are REALLY upset when others want their phone battery to last one day or at least 80% of the advertised life.

I admit there may be some phones that work that well and that many of you have found workarounds to the problem (wait did I say problem). Also, when someone says hey just find another 3G phone with more battery life and someone mentions one they get mean.

It goes to show you that some people like to have the new technology for what it can do for them and others just have a crush on Steve J and the gang. Apple makes many good products, but the company typically inflates the claims of security, usability, and stability significantly. A little more objectiveness by you fanboys could help those who are in the same boat as you, but dissing Apple might cause you significant loss of coolness....

There was a study that showed that Apple buyers were much less likely to allow friends and coworkers to touch their iPods, iPhones, Macs, and so on, when showing off their new tech toys than those who purchased other brands of technology. It seems like they really LOVE Apple in an unhealthy way.

All, I am saying is be generous with your help and don't resort to calling everyone liars, lazy, or lame.

What Apple says doesn't change the battery life. From this fact, there is only one reason why you should be mad that they lied: Had they been truthful, would you have bought the iPhone 3G?

NOTE: This is a mostly rhetorical question, seeing as though Apple's estimates were pretty damn close.

When I'm at home, my phone is charging. When I'm in my car, my phone is charging. When I'm in the office, my phone is charging. When I'm sleeping, my phone is charging. I'm the same way with my iPod and other portable devices... I haven't had a battery die on me in I don't know how long.

Are you guys just annoyed that you can't leave it unplugged for 2 days without charging it? Don't want to spring for a car charger or a travel charger? What's the big deal?

I suppose if everyone lives like you than there isn't a problem, but not everyone lives like you.

mine had a little under half battery last night...when I woke up it was dead. That's total BS.

exactly.. it leaks power while its sleeping. its bs.. i went out just now with a full battery... from 12:30 - 5 and it was dead by the time i got home.. i talked for 5 minutes.. used internet for maybe 30 minutes.. used gps for maybe 15 minutes.

There is an issue with some of the batteries..

Ok, after reading all the posts today I started doing some more research and some people are having issues with their batteries. I was charging my phone all night, and it was draining to 10% or less in about 3 hours with limited usage and even faster with heavy usage. Frustrated, I took it back to the Apple Store and voila, now I haven't had that issue at all...Imagine that! So if any of you are having battery problems, I would say try and conditioning the battery, but when all else fails, BRING IT BACK! LOL! :p

Everyone on here is saying how GOOD the battery is. My 2G iPhone got charged every night, I never had it go dead.... the new one? I charge it over night and by 1:00 PM in the afternoon... its about 60% dead and will almost make it home with me from work. I turned off the 3G yesterday... no difference...

I have been traveling in NYC the last 3 days and mine has been terrible on battery life. I have had to turn brightness all the way down, switch to edge, etc to keep it going in early afternoon. It hasn't been possible for me to charge it when on the go all day and Yankee stadium didn't have chargers available last night. I feel like mine is defective it's so bad so I will be visiting an apple store. Mine also has a terrible time connecting to the network requiring me to toggle airplane mode off and on repeatedly to acquire signal. All of this was under normal usage....few calls, 25 or so texts and 20 or so email. I didn't even use iPod as battery was too low.

Another question (thanks for reading): Can the iPhone be charged via USB by a MBP's battery?

Sure can! I charged my iphone off my MB while it was closed and got a full recharge off only about 15% of the battery of the MB.

I keep saying replaceable battery iPhone how simple is that? Every phone on the market has a replaceable battery what part of this does Apple not understand? I know, I know it is a marketing thing. They know that the battery will start wearing out in a year and you will have to send it back to buy a expensive battery from them. Or they know that they will come out with a new phone and you will just buy that instead of sending it in and be without a phone until yours comes back. Smart thinking Steve.

The part that doesnt understand it is dear old steve. a replaceable battery would require a latch or locking mechanism to keep it in place and that would ruin the design in steves eyes.

Live with it!!!

Jobsco said the reason Apple didn't use 3G in the first iPhone was because it's a battery hog. Well you guys that are complaining got your wish, the almighty 3G is here as requested.
Just turn off 3G when you don't use it and it should help.

In the meantime, live with it! :p:p:p

My ugly Humpback MOTO Q 3G phone would last from 06:30 to 01:00 the next morning since it was only 3G it was on full throttle all day and half the night and never let me down. I guess it is because I was willing to accept a ugly phone for good function and not just to be pretty. Function Steve give us a all day 3G phone or make a replaceable battery phone. You have made the best phone on the planet, now give us the power to use it all day.

As others have said, you can't always plug your phone in.

For those of us in the business world where meetings happen daily, and the day can be unpredictably long, there is no chance you will be able to have your phone plugged in at your convenience. Not to mention traveling - oh boy, traveling overseas, getting off the plane, and realizing your battery is half dead and you have to jump straight to a meeting and check emails.

If Steve wants the iPhone to make a splash in the corporate world, he NEEDS replaceable batteries otherwise it will never be taken seriously as a phone for mass enterprise use.

Get this... some people "travel" for work.

And when they travel for work, they might want to play games or listen to music while they travel...

Case in point - flew from JFK-SFO the day after the iPhone 3G came out. I got my iPhone on Friday morning. It charged all night.

Saturday I took a cab to the airport. Watched the GPS move for a couple minutes while on the road. Got on the plane - watched a couple video podcasts and then listened to music for a couple hours. Then I played a decent Bejeweled 2 session.

Long story short - I landed and my iPhone had already given the 20% battery life warning. So yes - the battery isn't horrible, but it really could be a lot better.

<sigh/> I'll just buy the new one next year and hopefully the 3g chips will be better then.

I for myself can (most of the time) charge the phone during the day so I'll generally not run out of battery power.

But has anyone thought of the implications of having to charge the iPhone twice a day? The old iPhone's battery was designed to last through 400 full recharge cycles - after that it'll only hold 80% of its original power.

The new iPhone's battery won't be any different - meaning that since I have to fully charge my phone twice a day, the battery will be down to 80% max capacity within 200 days. As battery life is already weak now, imagine how it'll be when it's max charge is reduced by 20%?

The weak battery and the constant need to recharge it means that you'll have to replace your battery after less than a year - which will mean you pay 100$ every 200-300 days extra and will have to go without the phone for several days at least once a year. Not good, if you ask me.

I always thought it sucks that you can't replace the iPhones battery and keep spares - but now it has become a real problem to me.

Don't be rational. People hate that. Actually the iPhone's 3G battery life seems pretty comparable to the Razr phone I have now. Complaining about battery life is just stupid.

His scenario isn't rational for many people. People aren't always near an outlet or don't want to be tethered to an outlet.

My real life example: I left home with a full charge. Arrived at school around 8am. Yada Yada. Left school at 8pm. I went home with a 10% charge.

I used about 15 minutes worth of calls (should reduce capacity by 5%),
5-6 hours of music playback (should reduce capacity by 25%)
30 min of net (should reduce capacity by 10%).

Total theoretical battery depletion should be 40%!!!!

That used 90%?? Calculating approximate battery life left(using Apple's numbers) after each allotment of usage doesn't even come close to Apple's claims and my usage was pretty light.

Sure can! I charged my iphone off my MB while it was closed and got a full recharge off only about 15% of the battery of the MB.

Thx for that info! Good to know. So it's like all the other devices (old iPhone, iPod...). The fact that one can keep the MB's or MBP's lid closed while charging is new since Leopard.

A wireless phone that is wired! Perfect! Just keep it plugged in and you wont have to worry about the battery life..... Hows that for being "mobile?"

For those complaining about the battery, you can always return it since your well within 30 days and go purchase a Nokia or Motorola since they have replaceable batteries. As for me, I will just keep my iPhone. Yes the battery can be better, however the iPhone is still a better product then any other smart phone out there. So stop your crying and go return it if the issues that bad. :p

It has a short battery life. For some it's o.k. cause they work in front of a computer all day, and can charge it, or have access to power sockets.

Often I am out and about all day, running from meeting to meeting making calls. My old iPhone would barely see me home that evening the new one goes dead about lunch.

It's pretty disappointing to see that, especially from the JesusPhone, I thought Jesus had more power then that!

One option is to buy a small external battery, like this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-Battery-Extender-Charger-iPhone/dp/B0018DKODQ/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_i

mine's not here yet, but it seems relatively unobtrusive for emergency charges while away from the desk, and size-wise, it's probably almost comparable to carrying an extra battery around anyway. When the battery gets low, just pop it on and continue working for however many hours it may actually allow the iPhone to run.

it looks aesthetically pleasing too: http://laughingsquid.com/kensington-mini-iphone-ipod-battery-pack-charger/
