Give a man a fish... feed him for a day
Teach a man to fish... feed him for a lifetime

Ah, but...

Sell a man a fish, and I can eat for a day.
Teach a man to fish, and I run myself out of business. :)

If the mods decide it's rude and remove it, that's fine with me. But I promise you I'm not concerned with whether or not someone finds me "rude" or "offensive."

Not many of us are or should be. I am referring to me, my situation, my recent vacation and time left for enlightenment of similar topics and situations. I don't anticipate anything to be consistent whatsoever. It is not for me to decide what is rude or offensive.

To reiterate what xUKHCx said early in this thread, the primary reason for banning ************************** was because the whole point of it is to be rude and condescending. We've lost track of the number of threads that have gotten derailed because of its usage, creating mountains of work for the moderators.

We don't have an issue with people linking to Google search results, although we do prefer that members also link to a specific page that addresses the question being posed. Something along the lines of...

You might want to check out Blah Blah Blah. Or try a Google search along these lines for more info.

...would be terrific. By doing so, you're giving the poster one fish to tide him over while you teach him how to catch his own fish for the future.

Excellent explanation.
What surprises me is nobody has registered blahblahblah.com yet.

Did you read the page where you make a new thread? I'm guessing not. I actually didn't care to read it either but it was plain as day. As unfair as it is to assume all new forum members read the FAQ and rules, it's equally unfair to assume no forum member can comprehend this:

I was a member for an entire year before I created my first thread. By then, I had already read the FAQ\rules. :D

You can only answer the same question so many times, let people search for it on their own.

But sometimes people jump the gun and ****** someone even though their question is more specific (usually advice-based) than a general question

More often then not the questions asked can be easily found a page deep.

I agree the first few times were funny, but now it's just old having people post that.

Personally I'd think it's be better to, instead of filtering the site out, replace the text with a link to MRoogle :D

It is a better example then others I have seen used. I remember one poster using a series of x's (it was more than 3 so I guess they thought it would be alright) to use as an example url. The website linked was obivously not appropriate.

Where's your sense of humor?

Come on people, when I mean people I mean the admins.

What's wrong with answering questions like, "Should I get...?" or "When will...?" with...

What ever happened to search first. Then search again. Then maybe post your question.

Moved to a more appropriate forum and an existing thread, if you scan back through this thread you can see your question has been answered.

I'm a member at this one site where before you finally submit your post, a list of possible similar threads pops up. Why can't that be utilized here?

I support this decision. I have been "lmgfy'd" at other forums. First time funny, second time.....uh....not so much.

Can you provide a link to that site? Maybe it is using different message board software.

I think I have seen this feature at phpBB boards. It's a modification. [edi] dangit, why do I always forget that the "multiquote" feature it there?

+1

If people don't want to help answer a question (even if it's one which has been asked before), then don't; no problem. But I can't understand people who spend several minutes explaining at length why they won't spend a few seconds answering the question. At least ****** is funny initially, but not for long.

What happened to "If you can't be a help, don't be a hindrance."?

It's not so much 'teaching a man to fish', more like pointing a finger at him, "This dork's fishing in a swimming pool. Try elsewhere, doofus. Hah-hah." </Nelson> :p

I belong to a couple of sites that do this

Hmm, that message board uses VBullletin too, like this board.

That Android board:

I understand why this was banned, but I see constant posts (lots of times by the same members) parroting the "search mroogle" with a bunch of outdated links over and over and over again - with nary a word or move from a moderator.

Seems like it's the exact reasoning which got ****** banned - unhelpful, pretentious, etc.

Is there a reason those posts aren't as policed?
