Yah I debated like you but in the end the change which is relative in value to each person was enough.

-love the new design-I like shiny things (it looks like jewelry, it’s so shiny, my precious)
-Better lte Qualcomm modem-signal on the xs max has bothered me and I’m Verizon cell towers
-battery life-my xs max is shot, while the battery life might not be as good as the 11 pro max, it is still an improvement
-I take photos and acknowledge the advantage of having a wide angle lens, there been many times in road trips this year where I wished I had the iPhone 11 camera than my xs (Yellowstone, sequoia, Grand Canyon, Big Sur coast).
-night time photos another positive, my xs max can’t match that
-2020 sucks so much it’s been horrible on so many levels this is a fun distraction

I too am thinking about an upgrade from my iPhone 4s Max to a 12. What would I gain:
•A better phone [ don't like talking to people and I hardly ever text]
•5G. Whats the rush? I don't look stuff up on my iPhone and I don't play games or watch movies.
•Shorter battery life[love the little battery case on my 4S]
I think I'll wait for next year.

XS Max was an amazing phone. Partner loved his until it randomly died this summer.

It's all about cameras now. 11 Pro Max cameras are incredible compared the XS Max, more so in low light. Wide lens shots are beautiful now. I scoffed at the 'Pro' moniker when it came out and thought it was a gimmick to cover the 5G omission that year, but after testing the 11 Pro Max camera I've changed my mind, I think some threshold has been crossed now.

If you're not taking photos or videos, I think it's hard to find a genuine reason to upgrade these days.

Ultimately many of us are hoping that the time will come when some leap in sensor technology arrives and the phone can truly replace a DSLR for street and even a lot of landscape photography. For many shots, it's already very close and the older point and shoot cameras, even the very good ones, which I used to eye up as a potential purchase, like Sony's RX100 vii - I've completely written off. I think that market will be killed off by Apple and co with their image processing tech. I already prefer iPhone 11 Pro photos to the RX. RX beats it when cropping in obviously with the sensor and in low light, but for the vast majority of point and click shots, 11 Pro pics just look so much nicer.

Only thing I get excited about with the phones is thinking what the cameras will be like in 5 years.

If you feel that you don’t need to upgrade, you don’t need to upgrade. Hit the upgrade trigger when the stars align. The XS Max is still a fantastic phone.

From the X onwards, the phones have got extremely powerful.

YoY differences in performance are now incremental compared to the huge jumps in the early years of the iPhone:

ie 3GS to 4, 5s to 6.

I think that Apple expects most people to upgrade every 2-4 years now.

So do it when it makes sense for you.

That’s your perspective. There’s a few reasons to upgrade. I think the new flat design is marvelous. Finally we get Qualcomm modems for faster use on LTE, I have 5G turned off. the Speakers 🔊 are better, when I plug my aux in the car the audio is stronger and higher. My nfc connection when I pay at retail stores is stronger. One store I would go to my Apple Pay wouldn’t ever work. I gave up on it. This one, 100%. The glass is stronger. Higher base storage. Higher ram. More advanced chip, first 5 nanometer chip. Higher water resistance.

Yes good point about the camera.

When i returned my 12 Pro, i kinda fell back in love with my X again. It felt so comfortable in my hands.
The bigger size and higher weight was the biggest difference i noticed and i didn‘t like it. Faster speed, bigger screen and better pictures did not make it up for me.

Gonna try the Mini, because i think for me the smaller size and weight will be the best feature in a long time.

The iPhone after the 12 is the one you want. There’s going to be a lot of people scrambling to sell their 12 next year 😉

XS max looks nicer than the 11 and 12 imo opinion mainly due to the nicer vertical camera layout.

All camera bumps are ugly. I don’t care which is the least ugly, as long as I don’t have to stare at the back of the device.

It is Ground Hog Day here every year, regardless of phone offering. Chasing tech is like chasing after a woman who constantly flirts with you and won’t give you her phone number.

Lol I am calm hombre :) After I posted I did recall something about updating a full iPhone and it bricking on people. I've done that too but never bricked it. I guess it could happen, but those odds..
