Ipad Pro has perfected the Face ID system. Portrait and landscape, without the ugly notch. When will the IPhone follow suit? iPhones are becoming stale market wise, as the production sales indictate. People also want a smaller IPhone. My proposal;
4 Inch (New SE)
5.5 Inch
7 Inch

No Notch, Face ID or Fingerprint sensor to open it

Are you asking in general, or specifically?

Because, assuming Apple jumps immediately on your request, the best they could do would be September 2019.

Because the bezel on the iPad is essentially one big notch. In the illustrations below you can see the notch + bezel of the iPhone XS (8.8mm) is only slightly ( 0.1mm) larger than the entire bezel of the iPad Pro 11" (8.7mm)

Why didn’t they make the side and bottom bezels on the pro as small as the Xr? They obviously don’t need to be as thick as they made them.. As far as a smaller phone, the market doesn’t agree with you. The 4.7 iPhones 7/8 are the smallest/touchid phones offered by Apple for as long as they’re continued to be sold..

Very key word. But SE FANS here are diehard so that I why I offered it.
I would go for the 7 inch PS.

Perfected? It’s not any more perfected then it is on the iPhone currently. Also, something else that other iPad users are experiencing, is they end up covering their face ID sensors one the iPad is in landscape mode, which won’t unlock for them. So in that respect, I don’t think it’s necessarily ‘Perfected’, even though that is user error.

Well one thing is symmetry on a design point and the other is they need a selling point in the next generation when they’ll reduce the side bezels;)

The iPad needs bezels because of the way its held. Otherwise you need to trust that unwanted touch supression works 100% which it does not. Those bezels also conveniently allow putting in the FaceID components.

On the iPhone the same does not apply. You hold the phone in your palm instead of from the edges. To fit the FaceID sensor array, you can either add a bezel on top or a notch. If you have a bezel on top you should have one on the bottom to balance out the visual design. Try imagining a S9 without a bottom bezel and it would not look that great. Or you could just do like Apple and opt for the notch which keeps the overall shape of the surrounding bezels the same but cuts out a portion from the top. This is also the reason XR has larger bezels, to keep it looking uniform from the sides. As LCD mounting advances they can probably shrink the overall bezel or they will just opt for OLEDs on all models, who knows.

the iPad Pro has the Face ID and helper sensors on each side OF THE SCREEN to help with orientation reading. to achieve this in a iPhone they would need to have a notch size bezel around the screen. so essentally a XR bezel all the way around. any it couldnt have the curved edges. it would need to be flat like there iPad pro /iphone 4

I will take a small bezel over an ugly, screen wasting notch, any day. While they call it a 6.1" Screen, it really isn't when you look at what is actually usable...

Or do a small notch like OnePlus and Essential did. Far less intrusive...
how can they pack all the Face ID components into an essential phone sized notch that only houses a camera? there's no wasted space in the Face ID notch. its packed full, who dont people realize that these android clones with small notches dont have 75% of the tech needed for Face ID.

The entire selling point of apples screen edge to edge. with a thick bezel all the way around it doesn't achieve that and just looks like the rest.

I guess because I don't care about face ID. It's more of a gimick, and raises privacy concerns for me. A cop can unlock your phone without your consent, by pointing it at your face. He can't force you to enter a PIN or trace a pattern...

Apart from that, while it seems to work fine for me, so did Samsungs face and retina ID. The Essential had the first edge to edge screen with a bezel as small as the XS, last year, and have a tiny notch. I found that to be a nice balance, personally. The phone was smaller than the iPhone 8, but managed to have a screen larger than the 8+. The fingerprint scanner on the back was among the fastest out there, and your finger went right to it when you picked up the phone, naturally.

I would rather have a thin bezel on top to house face id stuff, than to lose a significant portion of my usable screen area. It's not really a 6.1" screen, when you lose a quarter of an inch from the top...

Maybe if Apple comes out with sensors that work underneath the display, they would be cool. Similar to how OnePlus and others are not offering fingerprint scanners on the screen, so you don't have to see it or have a bezel...

The notch, as much as a lot of people despise it, is now a design element of the interface. It's not going away. It's here to stay for a long time whether we like it or not. So get over it or wallow in self inflicted irritation. Whining about the notch is like whining that the iphone can't use a mouse.

well, yes and no...

While others started copying it, which I think was stupid... they are realizing that while people might tolerate it... that very few people LIKE the notch...

I think that Apple didn't want to wait for tech to get to a point where face id could be done underneath the display, and rather than wait two years for face id, they made a compromise...

But I think that if Jobs were still around, there is no way he would have let that notch out the door...

lol at the cop argument. if a cop wanted to get ur code he could cuff u and use ur finger, etc. cops aren't unlocking ur phone they don't care. its a urban tale blown up by the internet. (source: my sisters a cop)

and the essential phone has HUGE a chin at the bottom, so its not edge to edge. try again.
and a back fingerprint sensor required u to always have to pick up ur phone. so there's that as well.

Samsungs face/retina scan required u to precisely line up ur phone in the eye shapes, that's more annoying than Face ID. and was proven to be anger to be fooled unlike Face ID. (unless u have a twin)

Because they wanted to make a distinctive phone. That’s it. If they had gotten rid of the Touch ID and made a black slab with a screen up front and a narrow black bezel above the screen (which they could have perfectly done), how would you know you’re looking at an iPhone?

Keep in mind that we don't have a notch because of Face ID, we have a notch because of the edge-to-edge screen. People keep blaming it on Face ID. But even without Face ID, there's still a lot of hardware that would need to work under the screen before the notch can be eliminated. Face ID only adds to the collection of sensors that are already present.

110% agreed. Videos on a notch phone at least on YT videos look cut into. Apple is losing to Samsung on design and I only own Apple products

If a cop try’s to point your phone at your face just close your eyes. For me it doesn’t unlock unless my eyes are open. Or pull a funny face - mouth wide open & tongue sticking out. Again, my phone won’t unlock. Can a cop force my eyes open or force me to keep a straight face? That’s harder than forcing my finger on my phone.

And anyway. If you are a master criminal, 007, international man (or woman) of mystery etc and are worried about this just use a passcode only.

It's more of a principle than any real concern. What is the benefit to me, of face id? At the end of the day, it doesn't work any better than the other tech that is already out there, so giving up screen real estate and making videos and stuff look wonky because they took a big bite out of the top, doesn't seem like a good idea to me. If people get all broken up over Essential or others having a "small chin" at the bottom, why are they not equally appalled at Apple forcing them to have a "giant mustache" at the top?

How is the notch better? At least a small chin doesn't eat into the screen, removing part of what you are trying to look at?

I hardly believe its a design element in that if the tech existed to put FaceID under the display, Apple would still choose to design with a bezel notch. The bezel notch in my opinion is just a stepping stone to the all screen display that apple will at some point figure out and release. It will probably be smaller in 2019 as we grow closer to the all screen display.

Correct. The notch was a means to an end, and lets be honest, it was a compromise at best. They were willing to sacrifice screen quality in order to have their face id and get rid of the chin and slim the bezels down.

If the tech existed to do it without the notch, they would have. Claiming that the notch is "a design element to set their product apart in the market" is just marketing spin and we all know it. haha
