Neither the Essential phone or 6T have a Face ID system the same as Apples. If they did, they’d both have a bigger notch. Samsung also has an overall larger top bezel running the entire width of the phone. Apple could have a bezel running across the entire top of the phone, but then we’d lose the ears and the ability to display status icons and the time there, meaning less screen space for actual content. I think Apple definitely made the right call.

I don't agree with that. If you had no ears, you wouldn't lose screen size. You would gain it when watching movies or doing things in landscape mode because with ears, that gets cropped or you miss part of what is on the screen. If you had no ears and that area that was ears, become screen because you wouldn't have the notch, and when you watched a movie the clock and battery display would go away and that entire screen would be used by the movie or whatever...

The obsession with tiny bezels is what is odd to me. Once again, putting form over function...

You have to zoom in to have your video over the notch, at which point you’ve already cut big chunks of your video off at the top and bottom.

If the notch was screen, where would you put the earpiece, selfie cam and Face ID system?

Good questions... I guess I would have held off on Face ID until such time as I had the tech to male it small enough to fit in a small bezel.

But I don’t run Apple. Part of the zooming issue you mentioned is due to apples decision to pick a non standard aspect ratio, again, taking a claimed 6.1’ screen and reducing the usable portion even more... by the time you remove the notch area and the. The letterboxing, how much is really left? 5.5”. Less?

Maybe I am the weird one that doesn’t care about selfie cams... I am not such a narcissist that I feel like I need to take lots of pics of myself. Nobody wants to see me, not even me. Haha

I don’t mind a little bezel. The iPhone had what, a 3/4 inch chin and forehead? It was massive. Just dropping it down to a few mm would have been a massive improvement. I see people complaining about the XR bezel, yet a year ago they felt that almost an inch of bezel was perfectly fine... smh...

That is why you got to not let it get to you.

“People” are not going to be less touchy, I am betting it will increase. Anyway done here this is off the topic and the mods will notice.

Again, have a great holiday!

It never gets to me... this is just something to do when I am bored. Haha

It’s interesting that you’re advocating Apple deliberately holding back technological advancement given how often I see people accusing Apple of deliberately withholding features for a future model.

It just goes to show that no matter what Apple do, people will complain.

I am all for the latest tech, if there is a benefit to me, and if it doesn’t require that I give up something else that matters to me. To me, Face ID is a gimmick. A finger reader on the back or tiny bezel and iris scan like Samsung has worked just fine for me...

I like change for the better, not just change for the sake of change...

I think Face ID is much better than Touch ID.

The notch is a small price to pay for Face ID (although even without Face ID, the iPhone X would have a notch to house the selfie cam and earpiece - they still have to go somewhere!).

Exactly. I thought it was obvious. But it appears that some people don’t get it.

Yeah I’m not sure why this proves to be so difficult for some people to understand.

When/if I watch any video at all on my iPhone X I don’t like cutting any of the video off, so I just watch it without zooming it at all.

Essential and now the OnePlus 6T have TINY notches. The Galaxy and Note Line, has small bezels and no notch. The ones that went full notch(You never go full notch), did it largely because Apple did, lets be honest...

So can I still not get a single person to answer the TV question I have posed like 4 times?

If you made the TV mock-up realistic, maybe someone would answer. On the iPhone, the components behind the notch dictate its thickness. Making it a full bezel won’t make it thinner. On your TV mock-up, you’ve made the notch thicker than the full bezel.

Also, TVs aren’t typically asked to display status info (or anything other than full screen video). Phones are. So “ears” on a TV are never useful, while they are useful on a phone anytime you are using it for non-full screen things (like web, messaging, banking, etc., etc.).

If you don’t like the notch in videos, use the setting that pillar boxes the sides.

So, my answer to the TV question: I’ll take the bezel because I use my TV for full-screen video 100% of the time.

What would the purpose of a notch on a TV? What functionality is in the notch to require it? I’ve never owned any TV with functionality in the bezel.

Well, there are different opinions on that I guess...

Besides the notch, what is it that bothers you about FaceID. I did not like it at first either but it worked so well that you forget it is even working. It is near transparent to me. The only time I now realize what it is doing is if my ha d occasionally gets in the way on the iPad in landscape. Not really an issue.

Most, like me, who had doubts found they liked FaceID after using it.

It's simple... The minor convenience of face ID is offset by wasting screen space on the notch. I would much rather have a 3mm bezel on top, which is like 1/10 the size of the top bezel that every iPhone had for 9 years and have the screen look uniform and not have stupid wasteful bunny ears.

My entire argument has been against the approach of form over function. Everyone is like BEZEL BEZEL BEZEL because until Apple told them they needed it, nobody cared. Now its all about the bezel, even if it means having to put stupid rabbit ears on the viewing screen...

I tolerate it, but I really don't like it. I was fine with finger readers and things like that. They work, and you can place them on the back. Other makes do that, put it right where your finger naturally rests... Another use of having it there, is that it allows you to hold it one handed, naturally, and use that finger reader to scroll up and down, whatever you are looking at on the screen, without having to switch your grip or use your other hand.

There are lots of little things like that, that other makers thing of, because they put functionality first, and form second.

Apple wants to create this beautiful work of art, and I feel like sometimes they forget that for some of us, it's a tool, not a piece of jewelry or a faux status symbol... Yeah, we want it to look nice, but it working, and working well, is the primary concern for a lot of people, and that right there is probably the biggest differentiator between the iOS and Android platforms...

Apple used to be "it just works", but I can list out an extensive list, historically and even current, where Apple is way less intuitive, more limited, and much harder to do simple tasks with... I have gone down that path before, and while my points will be well documented, the average Apple fan will claim they don't matter, or that not having that feature it or taking 5 steps of workarounds is acceptable, etc... And then 3 years from now when Apple catches up in those areas, they will claim how awesome and innovative it is, as I face palm myself into incoherence... Been there, done that, got the damned tshirt several times now.

So let's just leave it at that. I love the XR so far, despite the lame notch. The Apple watch, is the only smartwatch really worth buying... My iPad Pro is awesome, wouldn't consider another tablet other than a MS Surface, and that's only so that I can run the proper software to plug it in to my truck or my motorcycle's ECU to flash the programming or tune it... Other than that, Apple has watches and tablets locked, nobody can touch them there...

The phones? They are good enough. They aren't the best, they haven't been since maybe the iPhone 3G, possibly the first iteration of the iPhone 4 series. Since then they have taken a back seat to what Android has to offer and they have been playing catch up ever since.

But the iPhones have gotten better, as iOS has, as it adopts more of Android's features as time goes on, so it's good enough for me now, despite a list of shortcomings... but it allows me to make use of the Apple Watch, so I feel like it's a good trade off.

Cheers.

Is your attention span that short? LOL

You ask me a question, and rather than a simple "just cause" statement, I explain my thought process and your response is that you don't have the 90 seconds or so to read it...

No, that's not insulting, why do you ask? haha

The same place where other companies with small bezels put them. Make them a little smaller. Apple used to have a bezel that was over half an inch, on some phones closer to 3/4 of an inch. Has anyone been able to put a selfie cam and earpiece into a 3mm bezel?

Maybe it needs to be 4mm. The point is, Mr Literal, that I am pretty sure that Apple has the engineering prowess to make a small speaker and selfie cam that takes up minimal bezel. But they wanted Face ID instead and so that wasn't possible with current tech...

I dunno, get creative... Other companies got rid of the finger scanner but people wanted them... their response was to put it under the screen itself... Wha, wha, what? Witchcraft!

And yet a year later, several phones now have that. Finger reader under the screen, no loss of screen real estate and tiny bezels...

Where there is a will, someone will find a way... But I guess there isn't much will, because Apple can carve a chunk out of the screen and put mickey mouse ears on the display and Apple fans will claim it is the best innovation of the year...

Anyway, later, I got stuff to do...

Finger print readers under the screen come with their own set of compromises too. The big benefit of Face ID is that it doesn't require a deliberate action to authenticate, you just pick up and use your device. It also means your wet fingers or gloved hands don't prevent you from authenticating.

A secure face authentication system and a screen that goes all the way to the edges are great innovations.

But my helmet does. Point is, any form of authentication has flaws. Having the finger reader on the back, as I said, works well because your finger naturally rests there with you pick up the phone... there is no extra action, just pick it up...

Apple could make the logo on back, a biometric reader. That would be cool. They never will, for the same reason they won't put an LED notification light on there when it's easier to just sell you a $400 watch to get your notifications... LOL

And the fingerprint reader on the back has compromises too, such as needing to locate and place your finger on it to authenticate and being unable to authenticate when the phone is lying on its back.

Face id doesn't work when it is lying on it's back, unless you lean over the table and phone so that your face is in frame. If it's on the table 2 feet away to the side, you are just as out of luck with face id. :)

This vein of the argument is silly. ALL forms of authentication are prone to limitations.
