The worst part is that even when Verizon does launch VoLTE there is a chance that the Verizon iPhone 5 will not support it if Apple doesn't push an update to enable it.

It's a little more than just pushing an update.
It needs a hardware update so in other words the iPhone 5 will never do voice and carrier data on Verizon. Maybe the next iPhone will.

I hate that making calls and using data is such a 'big feature' that AT&T pushes (or pushed) in their ads. How many times can you realistically say that you'd use that?
iMessages are data (as already mentioned).

If you're making a calls a lot, not receiving iMessages until you hang up can be a real pisser.

It will also hard disconnect you from any voip like skype and instant messaging like google chat. That's a big pitfall for me.

I'm not putting the iPhone 5 down or anything, but a recent ad for the Droid RAZR MAXX HD made me question this. If the RAZR can do simultaneous voice and data on Verizon's 4G network, why can't the iPhone 5? Especially considering it can on AT&T's network. Personally, I don't see much of a need for the feature, but it just made me wonder. Is it the way it's built, or just a marketing thing?

Thanks :)

OP, your title is incorrect as worded. Allow me to clarify.

The Verizon iPhone 5 is capable of simultaneous voice and data over 3G/4G (ie, AT&T's 4G). I'm currently using a Verizon iPhone 5 on my AT&T account, and have surfed the net with my phone while on a call. It's only if you use the phone on Verizon's network that you do not have this ability. Sent from my iPhone 5.

I hate talking on the phone so it's not an issue for me. People who call me get my voice mail. If its an emergency my family and friends know to text or email me.

Ever called verizon and been on hold?

It's nice to be able to surf the web during that time. Or answer emails, or check my bank balance...

I didn't realize how great a feature this is/was til recently. it's like everything stops when I am on a call and I'm beginning to really dislike the fact that I can't do other things like email, look something up online because I am on a call.

At least a few times a day. Great for multitasking while on long mundane conference calls, or looking up information on the internet / email while on the phone. In my line of business I have a laptop with Internet connection about 2 hours a week. I pretty much rely on the iPhone simultaneous voice and data

In over 5 years on AT&T I talked and surfed the web once. Not going to miss it myself now that I'm on Verizon.

Why can't the Verizon iPhone 5 do simultaneous voice and data?
Missed this?

Poor reasoning. Do you not recall that there was a 3G Verizon device that could do simultaneous voice and data while others could not? The obvious answer is that not all devices are identical.

Subjective matter. Depends on who you ask.

When you have the ability to do this , you realize how much of a great feature this is. When you don't have it, well, we get opinions like yours.
Again, subjective. I've had devices capable of doing so and don't see the need. No matter what your preference is on the matter you can't simply assume that your preference is universal.
