None of the reasoning made any sense
they need more room?

Make the phone thicker with a flush camera and keep the jack

Floppy drive being replaced with standard hard drive. CD is replaced by streaming. But Apple is replacing 3.5mm with lightning port? **** no. Apple can **** itself and I will not buy lightning headphone.
You know…I have experience with this kind of frustration and anger you are exhibiting. All of us PowerPC Mac owners who got cut off in 2006 are well versed.

Your choice is like the choice we had. Either stay with what we know, upgrade or go somewhere else. But I can tell you that years down the line it gets harder and harder to find good quality off eBay or craigslist. And sooner or later you get hit by the people who jack up the prices because they think 'vintage' is cool and that people will pay for vintage.

Welcome to the club. :(

When's the last time you saw a computer ship with a floppy drive? It's time to move away from analog audio.

Why did Apple remove the CD/DVD drive from late model Mac laptops?

Why did Apple kill Appletalk? Why did Apple kill PowerPC Mac? Why did Apple kill OS9 Classic? Why did Apple kill syncing with Leopard 10.5.8 when using a lighting connector? Why did Apple kill syncing with a 30-pin connector for iOS 7 and higher? Why did Apple kill syncing with iOS 9 on anything less than Lion?

Why did Apple kill the floppy drive?

Why did the airlines kill piston-powered aircraft? Don't we all want to travel around for hours on end in a DC-3?

19th century tech has been removed. Good riddance to the jack.

Why did we still use the same straight out 110v power plugs?
Why do LED bulb still use the E27 screw base over the much smaller bayonet?
Why in America and UK do they still use Gallons and Ounces for fluids?
Why is wood used for residential houses when everything else is built from steel and concrete?
Why does the Nissan Leaf 100% electric car still have a SHIFT lever? (that one really needs to go).
Why go to stores when everything can be purchased online?
Why do airlines still have pilots when they where fully automated since 1993 (or about then)

Can you let me know when Apple introduces my new digital ears?

That makes no sense. The headphone jack in the iPhone is incapable of producing sound at a higher quality than the digital signal can. So you don't need digital ears to hear the difference. You just need ears.

Floppy disks are digital.

And audio is always analog, because humans are not digital.

2 fails.

What is missing is the WIRE.
and WIRE is 100% reliable. Wireless is not.

I think you need to go back to physics 101. The analogue jack is not limiting sound quality in any way.

Because some of those things are familiar and some of those things are held on to and some of those things are practical/for safety.

But none of those things with the exception of the last two (people holding on to what they know and safety) move technology forward.

What about plugging the iPhone into a car stereo? Headphone jacks are meant for headphones. The best way to go is Bluetooth or USB audio when dealing with stereos with built in amplifiers.

except for those of us that do it every day in our cars.

Exactly. Do I walk around charging my phone & listening to music? No. Do I drive around using Waze & streaming music while charging my phone because the constant data streams drain the battery in about 30 minutes? Absolutely.

The removal of the headphone jack is stupid & the reason given, "courage", is even worse. I get the reasoning. I get the desire to move away from what they see as 100 year old technology, but it is a global standard being replaced with a proprietary solution. That's not courage. That's a cash grab.

Care to back up your claim? The headphone port on a portable device isn't going to give you the best sound. It doesn't matter if our ears aren't digital, it's the technology that is lacking, not our ears.

Ever try using B/T?
Tried it a few times, pain in the rectum, and required often resets. Then again it was MS Sync in Ford.

I believe the point is simply that, at some point, the digital signal is converted to analog in all solutions, so it simply depends on the quality of the DAC.

The headphone port is limited only by the quality of the DAC and amplifier contained within the phone. The 3.5mm jack is effectively just a wire. Every ultra high end headphone and headphone amplifier uses this 'antiquated' jack because there is nothing wrong with it. Removing the jack just means that the DAC and amp just move to the headphone where they get smaller still and likely lower quality still except in some very expensive implementations like the Audeze lightning headphones. The conversion still happens though, still travels over a piece of wire where that analogue signal moves the driver that your ear hears. You'll notice that Apple didn't mention audio quality as one of their reasons for making this change.

I use Bluetooth almost exclusively and it's reliable and works great. Also, when I'm not using Bluetooth, I use headphones, but with the adapter, that won't be a problem either.

I was right about the reasoning behind the move (as you would expect given my name ;)).
Although I have to say, courage was not in my list. Seems like they added it because 3 reasons sounds better than 2.

I've connected my phone to at least 10 different BT equipped cars. Never had an issue. I have also connected to at least 7 different BT speakers. Also, never an issue.

I have a 07 BMW that doesn't have bluetooth audio. I use a 3.5mm headphone jack (aux in) and often charge my phone via a standard car charger. I suppose I won't be able to charge and play at the same time anymore.

I am in the same boat. I dont have a problem with them getting rid of the headphone jack, but they need to make a light adpator to allow both charge and headphone jack

Hopefully they do. I really don't want to try and have my audio go through some cheap BT transmitter plugged in to the AUX in.

This is great news! I now realize I can charge a premium to unload my 6s to all these folks with irreplaceable legacy 3.5mm jack technology.
